A Thousand Days in Tuscany: A Bittersweet Adventure

From Publishers Weekly

From its opening scene of an impromptu alfresco village feast of fried zucchini blossoms, fennel-roasted pork, and pudding made from the cream of a local blue-eyed cow, this memoir of the seasons in a small Tuscan village is rich with food, weather, romance and, above all, life. De Blasi continues the adventures begun in her A Thousand Days in Venice, as she and her husband, Fernando, leave Venice for Tuscany in search of "a place that still remembers real life... sweet and salty... each side of life dignifying the other." Fortunately, the two are adopted by Barlozzo, an elderly local eager to share his knowledge of the old ways. He introduces them to the local customs: grape harvesting, truffle hunting, bread baking, etc. Although the book teems with food references, including recipes for intriguing traditional dishes, de Blasi is more than a sunny regional food writer—she digs into the meaning of life. As she fights Fernando's periodic depressions and brings him back to joy, gains Barlozzo's trust and love, learns his troubling lifelong secrets and comes to terms with the death of a beloved friend, she immerses her readers in life's poignancy, brevity and wonder. From Booklist

Readers who enjoyed de Blasi's earlier work, A Thousand Days in Venice (2002), may be startled that the author has moved from Venice to Tuscany. Still much in love with the man for whom she left everything, de Blasi embarks on an idyllic, if hardworking, Tuscan life. The couple purchases an old farmhouse and is chagrined that it's not conveyed in the condition promised. Their neighbors welcome them to the community with a groaning board featuring all manner of Tuscan foods and capped off with a dessert that only hours earlier had been milked from a "blue-eyed" cow. As in her earlier work, most chapters close with recipes, ranging in complexity from braised pork stew that serves as both a pasta sauce and an entree to simple bruschetta, toasted bread topped with local olive oil. Thanks to de Blasi's style of rendering conversations first in Italian, then English, a careful reader can quickly pick up some useful conversational Italian. I usually love reading about travel and food and I started out enjoying the descriptions of Tuscany, but then I got bored since there wasn’t much of a story. It was just a bit slow and boring for me. I also had a difficult time trying to understand some of the characters. In all fairness, the story did pick up a bit near the end.I’m happy that I’ve learned how to properly pronounce bruschetta!I’m not sure as to whether I will read more in this series. I think that I like the idea of her books more than the books themselves. The attractive covers help also! Some of my favorite quotes:“Look at that Tuscan landscape. This is where everyone in the world would like to live."“Living in the moment and being content with one’s portion makes for the best of all lives.” “Don’t be afraid of your children. If they’re going to love you, they’ll love you on their own, without your having to pander to them. If they’re not going to love you, there’s nothing to do about it.”

An American journalist and chef extraordinaire moves into a small Tuscan village with her Venetian banker husband after a few years of marriage. Both are seeking a romanticized bucolic past that the old village sage says no longer exists. Living in a rustic renovated stable, Chou and Fernando are captivated by the scents, sounds, and sights of Tuscany and quickly blend into life in their village. There they share recipes, cooking, feasting, foraging the hills and woods for wild delicacies, and build an outside oven to bake bread and fire-pit for roasting. Barlozzo, the enigmatic sage, takes them under his wing and relishes their apt attention as he relates village history and arranges their participation in local activities such as grape picking and stomping, finding wild mushrooms, harvesting olives, and festivals. The bittersweet part comes through Fernando's flair for Italian operatic drama, questioning their decision to leave Venice. Barlozzo has secrets that eat at his heart, finally revealed through the terminal illness of his long-time beloved who had married another. There is yearning for times past that can only be tasted briefly, yet the flavor of village life fills and satisfies them. Cooking and eating are the heart of Tuscany, and this book brings an intense, colorful experience with mouth-watering recipes.Delightful, reflective, philosophical, and charming story based on the authors' life.

This is a charming, insightful story of an American chef and her love for a Venetian banker, the Italian people, the Tuscan village of San Casciano del Bagni, and for preparing sumptuous Italian meals. The author’s enthusiasm for all her new loves is contagious, and she easily draws in readers who wish to be transported into her realm of discovery and delight. There are familiar elements to this story of an American (or British writer) succumbing to the charms of Italy (or France), relocating, and then coping with the quirks and frustrations of settling into a new culture. But author Marlena de Blasi describes her transformation so well and she presents her new community with such passion, that readers are easily enchanted. Her focus on rustic Italian cooking, the feasts at which her new friends gathered, and the recipes is a special treat.Michael Helquist, MARIE EQUI: Radical Politics and Outlaw Passions

For kindle readers, beware. There are several mystifying formatting errors that intrude on the enjoyment of this book. There is one recipe with sections sprinkled throughout several pages of the narrative. In another case, sentences have been sent through a Cuisinart. One can follow it, but it is disconcerting to be reading the story line only to find that you should put it in the oven at 425 degrees. For all readers, also beware. I have been a big fan of Ms. de Blasi's books, but this one put me over the edge. In previous books, her florid prose contributed to the setting and story. In this one, it is so baroque that the story becomes secondary. It is almost a game to see how convoluted her metaphors can become, or how complex her descriptions. Less would have been far more. And there are a few sections that detract from the story line and lead nowhere. Readers of prior books know the love story -- if anything it intensifies in this book, but one begins to suspect that it is just more verbiage designed to make an otherwise pretty slim story a bit more meaty. Can anyone else experience love to these extremes? Can anyone else engage a whole village in new traditions by force of personality? Even her most beloved local character protests the overuse of velvets and satins in her decoration of her rented home. (It seemed like the Octomom on steroids, to me.) I conclude after this overwrought story that Ms. de Blasi is the diva of her own costume drama, that she must be one of those characters that are sort of embarrassing to know in real life. Sadly, since I had been quite a fan, I doubt I will be reading any more of Ms. de Blasi's work.

Extremely tedious and boring. If she wants to write a cook book, then write one! Too many metaphors and disjointed descriptions. I managed to get about 1/4 of the way through and gave up. I had read "A Thousand Days in Venice" which was not fantastic but had enough to encourage me to read this one. Mistake!

The book is well written and edited, and nice to look at. However, this is where my eulogies stop.I was debating whether to maybe give it 3 or 4 stars, but in the end I said to myself 'hey, it's a book about FUNCTIONAL, PRACTICAL stuff, and if it doesn't live up to that, then why give it that many stars? Here's what I think:1- Over half the book is dedicated to a lot of mostly unnecessary, albeit interesting, info. Carbs, fats, different kinds of foods, cellular processes, motivation, etc. Well explained, but most of us know this already. Could have been much briefer.2- Some of the information is incorrect, or simply false. The body does NOT use 2-3 gallons of water during heavy exercise. That's twice the entire amount of blood we have! Soy is not recommendable - most soy is GMO, and is not good for men anyway. Milk and fruit together are a bad combo, and most bodybuilders have long cut out things like skim milk. And you should not eat right before sleep, no matter your body type.3- The author is the biggest question mark of all. I could find nothing about him on the internet. No pictures of him in the book either. So how exactly did he insert photos and video links of the different exercises? Well he found other people's photos and videos, and inserted them into the book, that's how! The various charts and graphs seem to be also taken from the net. Wouldn't we want to see the author doing exercises himself? Instead, he links Youtube videos from loads of different people. And although his bio states he 'studied' calisthenics, there is no mention of him actually creating a great body for himself with calisthenics. No photo of his great bod. All this leads me to believe that the author is an armchair theorist, who has picked up his info from books, and repackaged them into his own. IF I am wrong, I ask the author to prove otherwise with proper credentials, photos, and videos of himself.4- The book starts off pretty well, but when it comes to the practical part, almost two-thirds into the book, things get confusing. At the start of the book, he claims calisthenics are simple, mentioning 4-5 basic exercises in the intro, but when he gets into the meat of things, all this is turned upside down. There are too many different exercises (even if we allow for the fact that some are for advanced practitioners). Too many warmup exercises are given even for the 2-minute warmup routine.5- Many vague statements, and variations of eating, lifestyle, and exercise, that simply confuse and are not explained in detail. 'If you are X, then do Y. If you are A, then do B. If you are C, then do Z.'. This is something that a beginner cannot handle since it is too vague. The book confused me even though I'm not new to the game.6- No practical, realistic, week-to-week routine for someone who is just starting. You're expecting an exercise routine, with clearly laid out progression, clear explanations of how much to rest (not 3 different versions), clear instructions on how much and what to eat for each particular type of person. I have not found this in the book, and would imagine that a complete beginner would not know exactly what to do, and would simply have to go by guesswork. To sum up, I don't remember the last time I asked for a refund for an amazon book, but this time I feel I will have to.

As a middle-aged, sedentary woman living in a rural community with brutal winters, and the closest gym almost an hour away, I was looking for a way to become healthier without having to drive a long distance or buy bulky equipment. Having injured myself in a gym, I've avoided "working out" for years, but recently my lack of physical activity has taken its toll. I wanted to reintroduce simple, safe exercise into my life, and with my fear of injury, calisthenics seemed like the best choice. Thus, I picked up this book, because of its focus on bodyweight exercise. I'm glad I did! It was very easy to read, has valuable (and sensible) information about diet, detailed workout programs for everyone (including a couch potato like me), and also (most importantly) clear photographs of every exercise, so I can do them correctly. I have a long way to go to get back in shape. But I've taken my first step to a healthier lifestyle, and thanks to this book, I know what to do next. Excellent resource.

I needed a Kindle book with examples of exercises I could do on my own without equipment. Progressive Calisthenics really delivered. All of the exercise use your own body and natural resistance to burn fat or tone and build muscle. They’re split up into basic and advanced exercises, and the author provides several different routines aimed at people with different fitness levels. (There’s even a special “couch potato” routine for exercising during commercials—which is probably perfect for me right now. haha)What really surprised me is how far into the book you read before hitting the exercise info. First, the author walks you through a lot of excellent information on how to make the most of calisthenics, including a big section on diet. He also helps you figure out how long it will take for you to see results. Some of the info you’ll have heard elsewhere, but there were a few things that surprised me—like calorie intake being based off of lean weight, not your scale weight, or how potatoes aren’t a healthy carb. There are pictures of what a good diet looks like, so you get real examples instead of just general info. I was surprised by all of the practical advice, and I liked the format. There’s a lot of science and even some history to read through, but it all helps explain things, so keep reading. Eventually you’ll get to the diet and exercise portions and be happy you did.

I really like this ebook. It's full of color images that help describe sometimes complex topics, like the "6 Degrees of Freedom". I found the section on the negative effects of sitting for long periods informative since I have a job where I sit most of the day. Every exercise has a photo or graphic that shows how to do it properly. I'd recommend this book to anyone getting into calisthenics.

Purchased this book to write my thesis and it is excellent. The book is well-written, by the developer of Cognitive Therapy, now Cognitive Behavior Therapy, and is easy to read. Has a lot of foundational principles and has been updated since the first edition.

The classic basic theory of Cognitive Therapy, my preferred MO for providing therapy (I'm a clinical psychologist).

A great explanation of cognitive therapy from the father of CBT. These lessons can be very helpful in mental health counseling. It doesn't account for genetic/biological causes of mental illness and short-term, natural reasons for overwhelming despair.

Good Read

I think this book is a classic. Still relevant today

A good foundation book. This was a replacement copy. Follow up with CBT for depression and personality disorders.

Aaron T. Beck's book is written with a very clear and precise language. It's an effective way for understanding the meandering paths emotional problems can take.

Well written, well supported and to the point. Beck contrasts the major schools with clarity rarely seen in modern psychological literature.

this is a textbook for a class I'm taking. very interesting content, well-organized. not too dry; like reading magazine articles and interviews. first book I've read on public art so have nothing to compare it to. I recommend the physical book, not the e-book.The digital experience is not great. MIT Press has a proprietary format that requires different apps dep on your device. Books do not sync between devices so notes and bookmarks only available on the one. On ipad, there is no text highlight or copy , only on mac/pc. books not available on phone at all.

Although Finkelpearl is simply wrong about the web and his setting up of an antithetical relationship between the city and its suburbs is, well, dated... his book is really one of the best collection of contemporary public art interviews and ideas out there. Finkelpearl's hands-on involvement with NYC public art programs gives him a level-headed, understated, and pragmatic interview style which avoids too much theoretical diddling and agenda-pumping. Smart, clear, well organized... anybody interested in contemporary public art should own this book.

Erik Loomis gives us a well written brief history of working women and men uniting to improve their working conditions and their personal lives against the background of a general narrative of US history at large. His main argument is that unions only succeed when they represent the interests of large numbers of workers, and also by electing political officials who will support those interests through legislation. Today unions in the private sector represent only a small fraction of working people, and even in government where about one in three workers are represented by a union, the handwriting appears to be on the wall: right to work laws and the end of automatic union dues will undermine these private sector unions as well. Hard times ahead for unions and the people they represent. So why write a book about the history of union strikes? Loomis says that "these early strikes should serve as an inspiration today, showing us that our ancestors, much like us, faced a rapidly changing world by seeking justice for their brothers and sisters." (28) My only quibble with the book is that the author doesn't mention the fact that strikes can also be fun for working people. In 1979 as a dockworker and Teamster I walked the strike picket line in Elk Grove, California. We walked for two hours in shifts, and then retired to one of our Teamster brother's RV for cold beer and baseball on the television. We won a wage and benefits increase. Nice work if you can get it!

How I wish this book had been available back in American history class. A neat set of examples demonstrating how democratic government can be either the problem, or the solution, when it comes to poverty and oppression and economic fairness.

I love union history my mom was President of local S.E.I.U. My dad was one of air traffic control who got hire after patio strike and proud N.A.T.C.A. Member support of all union. Union proud family

Erik Loomis in ‘A History of America in Ten Strikes’ makes no secret of the fact that he sides with those who “throughout American history … wanted to work and live with human dignity” and who thus felt periodically obliged to withdraw their labour, as the employers’ “goal is to exploit us” and they “treat us like garbage”. “Us” is the preferred pronoun of the Associate Professor to express his profound sense of identity and solidarity with the unionised. This declared bias means that the argument of this book is not, surprisingly, lacking in subtlety. True, Loomis warns at one point that “we should not romanticize strikes” (not least because some strikes were called “to keep workplaces all white”) but this is precisely what Loomis nevertheless ends up doing. The book comprises an introduction; ten chapters focusing upon a particular strike (with roughly one-third of each chapter examining the strike in question, whilst the remaining two-thirds aim to place “that strike in context of the broader issues affecting Americans at the time”); then there is a conclusion; and finally an appendix comprising a timeline of the 150 most important moments in US labour history, ranging from the first importation of American slaves to Jamestown in 1619, to the 2016 election of President Trump (who is elsewhere characterized as “a fascist Islamophobe”). The ten strikes run from the Lowell Mill Girls Strike of 1830–40, to the Justice for Janitors action in Los Angeles in 1990.Loomis provides some interesting and accessible narrative but very little by way of incisive analysis. Even the criteria for choosing his ten strikes seem terribly vague. For example we’re told in advance that his consideration of the 1902 Anthracite Strike in Pennsylvania will explain “ the central role of government in deciding the fate of a strike, with both great possibilities and great peril for workers”. This level of platitude suffuses the entire book. Thus the chapter on the 1980 Air Traffic Controllers’ strike, for example, begins by telling us that “When government opposes unions, workers suffer.” Does anyone but the most blinkered neoliberal really need that spelt out, and even when spelt out thus baldly would any neoliberal be persuaded to mend their ways?Another problem with the book, considered as a work of History, is that Loomis is clearly as much – or more – concerned with the present and the future as he is with the past but whereas Naomi Klein in ‘No is Not Enough’ provides a rousing and plausible plan of campaign for uniting and mobilizing trade unionists, environmentalists, feminists, indigenous people and “the other victims of racism and xenophobia”, Loomis’s hope for “worker justice” in the future rests on turning the Democratic Party once again “into an instrument of workers’ rights” by unspecified “organizing both inside and outside” it.In short, whilst historically there is power in a union, ‘A History of America in Ten Strikes’ is decidedly anaemic, being as rich in vicarious indignation, as it is poor in insights about the past or detailed proposals for the future.

Bug: The Strange Mutations of the World's Most Famous Automobile

From Publishers Weekly

The Volkswagon Bug-so named for its outline, its droning engine and its "insectlike ubiquitousness"-is no simple car, argues Patton in this entertaining history: it is "a shape, a set of ideas-and a selfish meme" (the term zoologist Richard Dawkins coined to describe the cultural equivalent of a selfish gene). After chronicling the minutia of American life in Made in USA: The Secret Histories of the Things That Made America, Patton turns his sharp-eyed gaze to the VW Beetle's improbable journey from Third Reich dream to Disney's cute Herbie the Love Bug to Silicon Valley status symbol. Pulling material from obscure books, films and songs, he shows how the story of the Bug is essentially the postmodern dream of the West in the 20th century. Today's Bug, Patton argues, is a synthesis of such unrelated events as Ford's assembly line, Hitler's attempted conquest of Russia, pre-war German union intrigue, the rebuilding of postwar Germany, U.S.-Japanese car wars, 1960's counterculture and the brilliant manipulations of the American marketing machine-making the car an enduring cultural icon and an idea that refuses to die. 8 pages of b&w photos Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal

It became an iconic shape on the roads, with quirky advertising that won many awards. It was a huge success, and then it was gone. Now the Volkswagen Beetle is back, and this new book attempts to place it in the context of a changing historical landscape. Unfortunately, by trying to combine history, social commentary, design analysis, and political intrigue in one package, Patton (Dreamland) fails to do any of them well. This is a shame because the Beetle was a car that always made people happy. There are mistakes in the book that will make car enthusiasts cringe. For example, the Karmann Ghia sports derivative was introduced in 1955, not 1957. The Taurus didn't save Ford in 1985 when it was introduced; it took several years for that to happen. The Mazda Miata was introduced in 1989, not 1983. The introduction of the Rabbit GTI had nothing to do with VW's Fahrvergnugen advertising campaign. Taken alone, none of these mistakes looms large, but together they are emblematic of a tendency to merge design eras and to condense events of different decades. While much of the history here is accurate, many other books have more depth, e.g., Walter Henry Nelson's Small Wonder, and numerous titles accompanied the new Beetle's 1998 release. I disagree with other reviewers who seemed most appalled with Patton's willingness to connect the Beetle with Hitler. Patton does acknowledge that the idea of a "people's car" had roots that preceded Hitler. But Hitler pushed the concept as part of his plan for economic power in Germany. This fact does not give Hitler "credit" for something wonderful and magical. It's just a car, folks. To suggest (or, as Beetle fans often do, insist) that Hilter had nothing to do with it is simply naive. Yes, Hitler was a madman and yes, ironically, he had something to do with creating the most beloved automobile of the century. That said, most of the book concerns itself with more interesting ideas about the connections between technology and human culture. This is not your standard "VW history," but rather a wide-reaching history of the importance of automobiles and the way people connect and fail to connect with certain models. The author is not afraid to try to find connections between ideas and words in interesting ways. If you're looking for straightforward technical prose, look elsewhere. Patton is an intelligent writer who knows how to turn a phrase.

Whether or not Phil Patton's latest is factually accurate or merely revisionist sensationalism, the first half of this overly long "history" of the VW Beetle makes for an entertaining enough read. But past World War Two and Hitler's interest in developing the ultimate people's car, the narrative loses focus and seems to lose its way amid references to Charles Manson, Mickey Mouse, Nike Town, and a host of other pop culture items. I almost got the feeling that the author wasn't quite sure which direction to take and that his editor was MIA. I found myself also losing focus the more I read and by the time the author discusses the Autostadt, I'd lost any semblance of interest. I'd have stopped reading, but I had less than twenty pages to go.My hat goes off to the dust jacket's designer. It's exceptionally eye-catching.

Author Phil Patton has done an excellent job describing how the VW mirrored the various time periods of it's existence. From Adolph Hitler's intent to create a car for the German Volk; the heir apparent to Henry Ford's Model T, to it's "status" as a fashion statement by Leftist college educated Americans in the 1950s and early 1960s who were making a statement against Detroit's agenda of "bigger is better", to the Bug's becoming the icon of the nihilistic drug fueled hippies of the late 1960s and early 1970s, and finally to it's demise because it was product that had been obsolete for decades. In reality, it very much was a pathetic excuse of a car, and that Volkwagen survived so long building this one vehicle defies logic. The irony now is the the Volkwagen company of 2008 has adopted the Alfred Sloan philosophy of a "car for every purse and purpose", ie witness the wide range of models marketed via the VW, Audi, Skoda, SEAT, Bentley, Lamborghini, Porsche, and Bugatti marques. History, though, is cyclical. If the Democrats under Obama win the White House, maybe that will be an indication that Americans once again will snap up a joke of a vehicle, one that symbolizes an age of diminished expections. Maybe India's Ta Ta Motors will step up the plate !!

1 star for proceeding from the most egregiously faulty and revisionary premise: that the concept and design of the "bug" was the brainchild of Adolf Hitler.Ferdinand Porsche had been working on a "People's Car" for more than 20 years before Hitler was even in power. Porsche was frequently forced to backburner the project because his employers (like Daimler-Benz) wanted his design talents focused on the luxury saloons, not an inexpensive 'everyman' car. Porsche eventually quit his job and formed his own design bureau and did piece work for his former employers to fund his passion: the volks-wagen.Many prototypes had already been built and 90% of the design completed before Hitler appeared quite late in the development process. Adolf's ideas (as referenced in this book) were already part Porsche's pre-KdF design or were the marketing meddlings of a politician anxious to make populist hay of the German Auto industry's refusal to produce an affordable, maintainable car.Phil Patton has robbed Ferdinand Porsche of the credit he deserves for the selfless pursuit of a people's car and places the laurels, unmerited, on the brow of a madman. Porsche was the visionary; Hitler was only the financial means. You could say that Porsche allowed his life-long goal to see the car produced cloud his judgement in choosing a business partner.Crediting Hitler with the design of the Volkswagen is sensationalistic historical revisionism at it worst. For a historically responsible evaluation see "Volkswagen - Nine Lives Later" by Dan R. Post.

It would seem logical that a book about the various mutations and variations of the VW Beetle would be full of illustrations - this book has very, very few. Not recommended.Instead, look for "Volkswagens of the World" - even though it covers much more than just Beetles, it has over 650 photos and is a much more enlightening book.

We did a week in Rome and utilized this book exclusively. We did the "must sees" and more or less followed the guides/walks presented in the book. (Of course, meandering plenty but generally sticking to the basic structure.) Overall, we feel like we had a great week and saw what we hoped to see. The best part of the book are the tips. For example, buying Colosseum/Forum tickets at the Palatine entrance saved us probably 60-90 mins of waiting in line (it felt like cheating.) Another great tip was entering St. Peter's Basilica from the Sistine Chapel (thereby saving another 60 min security line.) Those two tips alone were worth 10x what we paid for the book!I'll definitely seek out these pocket guides for future travels.

Short Review: Wonderful little book. Used it consistently while in Rome. Carried it in my back pocket until the last day when it fell out and I lost it while riding a bike on the super bumpy streets of Rome. The book is well worth the money!!!! I even saved an additional 15 euro by using Rick Steve's in a promo code for 2 tours I booked, so I actually saved money with this book.SUGGESTIONS:Suggestions for a FUN VACATION. (I just got back yesterday.)1) Read this book at least a few weeks before you go. It will give you a good base knowledge of what you can see and do.2) There are tons of things to see in Rome, so plan your days / schedules. Plan for sight seeing, and some for rest and relaxation. You will need it, maybe due to jet-lag and just wanting some rest. Plus, without stopping I could have missed the beauty of the culture - its people and how wonderful they are in so many ways.3) Know what you want to see and plan accordingly. Make a priority list of things you must see and hit those first so that if there are delays/obstacles you can have time to try to see them again if necessary.4) Find reputable Tour guides/companies. This is not a plug just my experiences. I went with Through Eternity Tours for 2 tours. Tour #1 The Vatican/St Peter's church / Sisteen Chapel - Grade: D. The guide was not a fan - so the sarcasm was thick and so was the constant degrading of everything the Vatican stood for, had done, and owned. I wasn't paying for the guide's personal theology, philosophy or opinions but for facts, history, etc about the place I'm visiting. It was very frustrating.Tour #2 Colosseum, Palatine Hill and Roman Forum - Grade: A. The guide was fantastic. She has a Doctorate in Cultural Heritage. She brought visual aids to show you recreations of what the ruins would possibly have looked like etc. Her love for Rome, it's glory and it's faults was infectous. Her name was Enrica. If you go with Through Eternity use the promo code RickSteve or is it RickSteves try both, but it will save you 10% off the cost of the tour. Also, to see TOTALLY fascinating stuff but not on the big tours etc. I went with Free bike Tours of Rome. Simone was our guide and he took us on a 4 hour bike ride tour. I'm so glad went on it! I got so much out of that tour and we saw sights and learned history that wasn't a part of the other big tours. Totally worth it! Take water!!5) There is A LOT of walking in Rome. Wear shoes that can support your feet and also handle the bricked streets which are very uneven and quite bumpy.6) Download Rick Steve's Free audio tour guides and maps. They were EXCELLENT and FREE! I did the following: Heart of Rome Walk, Roman Forum, Colloseum, Pantheon, and Pompeii tours.7) Go to Piazza Novona and have the chocolate gelato from Tre Scilare (spelling?) Rick Steve's mentions it. It was worth it. If you don't want to pay for a meal to get it just go to the gelato shop to the far right, they sell it there and it will cost you 4 Euro.8) There are vendors everywhere!! So if you see something you want - NEGOTIATE!! Here is what I found. Whatever price the vendors walking around offer - counter offer with 10% of the initial asking price. Yes, 10%! Then very slowly raise your offer. The walking around vendors will protest the offer - it's all a song and dance. Even walk away from the vendor but walk away slowly they will eventually come back to you. But before you walk away they will give you a much more realistic price which you can get a better understanding of how much you should pay. At the end, I paid between 10-20% of their initial offer. So have fun, play the game and get something you might like.Negotiating with people with display stands etc, figure you can save at least 25-33% off of their listed price. I did.Painters/paintings - you can generally save 20-25% very easily! I wouldn't pay list price. The artists will almost immediately reduce the price themselves within minutes if you will just ask for the "best price" then let the games begin. These sellers are used to this process and expect it, except many Americans aren't used to negotiating. We look for items on sale. However, in Italy, create your own "sale" by asking for best pricing.Have a great vacation!God bless!

I've always viewed Rick Steves as the gold standard when it comes to guides for European travel, and this book was no exception. The pocket guides are my favorite because they give great highlights without giving every last detail. The whole book was great, but the portion on the Borghese Gallery was probably my favorite. I also really enjoyed the suggested walk through the different piazzas. My SO and I did the Walk right around sunset and it was wonderfully romantic. The little tips are great, too! The suggestion to exit the Sistine Chapel through the back door in order to access Saint Peter's Basilicia was a huge time saver!

We absolutely loved this travel book! We used this book as our bible during our visit to Rome. (That's saying a lot because we are 2 pastors!). I read the entire book on our flight to Italy & I am so glad I did! We were prepared to hit the ground running! The best parts of this book are:-tips on saving money. We learned about buying the Roma Pass which gave us transportation, entry into museums, & other discounts. Those Passes saved us so much money!-guided tours. There are many tours written in this book that guided us through important places & gave us a unique view that we would have been ignorant of without this book. The "Night Walk through Rome" is a turn-by-turn, fun, romantic, & educational guide to some beautiful parts of the city (including hidden & awesome courtyards), ending at the famed Trevi Fountain. My husband complained about this walk, so I read each part of the tour to him as we walked & he ended up loving it! He says it was one of his favorite parts of our visit to Rome.-map. The fold-out map in this book is awesome! We loved that we didn't have to carry an additional map.-size. This book is so small! We were able to fit it easily into our small travel bag.-insider information. This book led us to the Borghese Gallery. We saw the greatest art in Rome at that gallery! I will forever be grateful for Rick Steves for leading us there.-ratings. Rick Steves is so well traveled that he write honestly & thoroughly about Rome. We read about what was worth our time and what was not. We decided not to visit the tourist-heavy catacombs & instead traveled farther away to visit St. Priscilla's catacombs. We avoided many tourist traps because of this book. He even suggests places to picnic, go to the bathroom (for free), & get water.Adding this book to the free podcasts that Rick Steves offers gave us an incredible visit to Rome. No visit to Rome is complete without Rick Steves guidance!Buy this book, read it cover to cover before your trip, & you won't regret it!
