This was the early 1800's. How could one expect it Not to be bleak, although the house, Bleak House, is the antithesis of bleak.A great "series" and pretty realistic. I've read a few reviewers talk about Downtown Abbey as good but Bleak House as dark and bleak. No kidding. It's the 1800's and if you didn't have money life was pretty horrendous. Also, Downton Abbey was the early 1900's, 50+ years later than is shown here.Downton Abbey, although a favorite, it is very detailed and realistic for the rich, with little to no realistic reflection of the details of poverty other than what's shown of the downstairs workers.Gillian is good but has the same 3 looks used over and over. I get she's lived a tortured life and has made decisions, i.e. marrying her husband, for her own survival and welfare but we really don't get to see much beyond the one dimensional presentation of her living an unhappy rich life. The other characters are far more interesting only because they've fleshed out their characters. Sadly I was unaware of the history and although I knew it was Season 1 in 2005, I believed there was a Season 2. So, I'd not realized when it's done, it's done. No more.It should really be presented as a Mini-series.I won't ruin it for those who haven't seen it, so I'll only say I really liked watching however I thought the last 30-60 minutes could have been done better.

It's not Austen, and it's not Bronte. It's Dickens and it's great. Andrew Davies, BBC, and the all-star cast did an amazing job. Glad I finally got the chance to watch it. I highly, highly recommend. Especially if you can understand that Dickens is severe compared to Austen and gritty compared to Bronte (both Bronte sisters); and especially if this severity and grittiness does not turn you off. From some of the negative reviews, I think some were expecting the lightness of Austen. This is definitely not that. And as always, the cinematography is once again outstanding in this BBC production as the last several years have been.

I have never thought of Bleak House as Charles Dickens's best novel, but this series is the best film treatment of a Dickens novels since Alistair Sims's Christmas Carol. The acting is superb and subtle, allowing for thoughts to be conveyed without words. The parts of the book which critics, and sometimes with justice, called sentimental are here transformed into very moving and controlled scenes. I cannot recommend this series too highly.

I just could not get into the actual book a few years back, but I was absolutely engrossed in this miniseries. It reveals the comfortable lifestyle of the rich which was not always filled with parties and holidays, but also bad choices, sadness & regret, the more numerous working class, and the desperate, and sometimes gritty, lower-class's struggles to survive by any means. You'll detest the villains and anxiously hope the innocent to prevail. I loved how the personalities of each character were wonderfully developed and portrayed. Very well acted! Highly recommend.

Terrific production. Andrew Davies adaptation of the Charles Dickenson classic confirms what an extraordinarily gifted screenwriter Davies is. The casting is a gift unto itself with the BBC's most talented actors in each and every role. The sets and costumes are wonderful and really add another dimension to the story. The stellar portrayals by the cast bring the ring of truth to the story as it reflects the many faces of the human condition. We feel the characters hopes, fears, longing, joy, and desperation. We witness, both circumstantial and inherently, the kindness and malice that is human nature. A moving, intriguing, and thought provoking screen production of a truly great literary work. While Jillian Anderson is young to be cast as Anna Maxwell Martin's mother, Anderson's brilliant performance overrides the closeness in age between the two actresses portraying mother and daughter. One of the best dramatic videos I've seen in a long time.

Classic Dickens made into a miniseries! Light up the fireplace and break out the popcorn! Dickens doesn't just write stories, he published some great satire and this is arguably his best work. "Bleak House" is the story of two orphans brought into the legal system as wards of the court while they wait for the long standing lawsuit which will decide how a large estate is split up. Long standing as in lifetimes. It is pointed out in the story that such a lawsuit is actually a curse which disrupts the lives of the litigants who are waiting on a large monetary handout which could potentially occur at any time...but never happens. I have to agree with this assessment. Bleak house was I believe written to show the futility of a lawsuit in the legal system of 19th century England. Dickens himself was involved in a lawsuit during his own childhood. This story has everything, lost love, tragic death, greed, men who act with uncommon evil, and others who act with loving benevolence. And don't forget the fragility of life in the 1800's when it was common for people to become ill and die quickly. The top notch BBC cast includes (surprise) Jillian Anderson. She is pure genius and hardly recognizable in her role as Lady Deadlock. The story is hard to follow at times due to the large cast and complex story lines. You will want to pay close attention to keep up. The setting and costumes are passable only. In one scene the Ada character lays in the grass with her fiance and her cowboy boots are visible where her dress rides up. No biggie though, this is still well worth watching due to the amazing actors and of course use of Dickens story.

From the Back Cover

The watchmaker belongs to the eighteenth-century theologian William Paley, who made one of the most famous creationist arguments: Just as a watch is too complicated and too functional to have sprung into existence by accident, so too must all living things, with their far greater complexity, be purposefully designed. It was Charles Darwin's brilliant discovery that put the lie to these arguments. But only Richard Dawkins could have written this eloquent riposte to the creationists. Natural selection - the unconscious, automatic, blind, yet essentially nonrandom process that Darwin discovered - has no purpose in mind. If it can be said to play the role of watchmaker in nature, it is the blind watchmaker. Acclaimed as perhaps the most influential work on evolution written in this century, The Blind Watchmaker offers an engaging and accessible introduction to one of the most important scientific discoveries of all time.

I thoroughly enjoyed Richard Dawkins' book, The Blind Watchmaker. I read this right after reading Dawkins' earlier creation, the Selfish Gene. This book is brilliantly written and most importantly it conveys subtle and profound scientific ideas in easy and enjoyable language. Some of the key concepts that Dawkins puts forward (which I was impressed with) include arguments for non blended, "particulate" inheritance and how this relates to sex. Also, he describes how one sees in sexual selection an unusual positive feedback, leading to such things as apparently inefficient long tails, and this is contrasted with the usual negative feedback that one tends to see in nature. The positive feedback loop results from the linkage between preference genes and the trait genes themselves. There was a very nice discussion of genes and the environment and how the environment of genes includes other genes both within an individual and in other organisms, and this, in turn, leads to complex types of cooperation, arms races and the famous red queen effect. Finally, I liked the discussion of sensory systems such as vision and bat echolocation and how we can learn from these areas where nature has adapted to such a great degree and how we can see that in this process using less refined systems sometimes is evolutionarily advantageous.Overall I found this a thoroughly enjoyable read and I would highly recommend it to anybody else. It is a great classic.

Great read. Despite what the title and some negative reviews may lead you to believe, this book is not so much anti-creationist as pro-Darwinist. Using rigorous logic and arguments rooted in biology, probability theory and information theory, Dawkins proves that Darwinism is still the most plausible and consistent theory explaining the emergence and development of life on Earth. Even though a big part of the book is dedicated to debunking creationist arguments, it also includes the critique of competing scientific theories (for example those that do not consider natural selection to be the primary driving force behind evolution).

I picked up this book based on a recommendation from a website on Genetic Algorithms. The book convincingly presents multiple evidence-based arguments to support the theory of evolution (against creationism and intelligent design theories). Lot of interesting information here around how animals evolved to adapt to their environment in different ways in different parts of the world. Evolution has always made sense to me (but its probably because I learned about it at school and heard about Creationism as an adult) and I have never really questioned it, but this book made me appreciate the fact that random paths with a good acceptance function can often converge to good solutions.

Very good read, Dawkins very patiently guides the reader to a decent understanding of how evolution via natural selection works. The Bio-Morph Land example does a good job of explaining complex design through accumulation of small, gradual changes. I also enjoyed the chapter on alternative theories to natural selection, and the slow and methodical dismantling of them. All in all, a must read for anyone interested in a better understanding of evolution via natural selection.

In observation, I could be critical because I prefer books on genetics and parenthetical topics with a little more technical information. With that in mind I attempted to read this book with an open mind and intense focus in an effort to obtain a connected theme. However, I find the material pedantic and dense with obscure intention to a final idea. I am not a novice to genetics and I appreciate his topic but It was easy to get lost in the deluge of words meant to convey ideas which were lost in paragraphs of nonsequential thoughts. This book is not a keeper for me.

The cover of Richard Dawkins book states "Why the evidence of evolution reveals a universe without design." I think the task of trying to write a book that can unequivocally demonstrate that life arose without any designer input is an exceedingly difficult task. Let's face it, we know very little about the origins of life in the early days of several billion years ago. Our bulk of information dates from the Cambrian period forward. With that said, I think Dawkins did a remarkable job at this task. However, if I were someone who believed in a designer or that there was some intelligence behind life, I don't think I would necessarily come away convinced otherwise after reading this book. Keep in mind, also, that this book was written some time ago and today, in 2011, we have acquired considerable knowledge on the subject of evolution that just wasn't available then especially in the field of genetics. The reference to a blind watchmaker in the title refers to the fact that natural selection can be said to play the role of a watchmaker in nature; it is called the blind watchmaker. The reference to a watchmaker refers back to a treatise written by William Paley back in 1802. Paley reasoned that a watch which has complex inner workings must therefore have had a designer. In other words, you can tell by looking at something that it had a designer.I did notice, as some others have commented, that Dawkins has in this book resorted to great verbiage in order to prove various points - not that there is anything wrong with this approach. He does seem though to want to make sure the last nail is firmly hammered into the coffin, so to speak.A few highlights:In chapter three, he tries to prove the point of cumulative selection. He does this using computer programs he wrote to produced computer generated creatures showing how changes can over time produce more complex forms. I'm not sure how strong an argument this is considering how much more complex the development of life is than a computer program. In chapter five, the discussion turns to DNA, RNA, the histone H4 gene, and the RNA-replicase experiment among other things. In chapter seven, we learn about "co-adapted genotypes" and "arms races."In chapter nine, Dawkins devotes the entire chapter to discussing the theory of punctuated equilibrium stating flatly that the theory "lies firmly within the neo-Darwinian synthesis." In other words, it is a type of gradualist theory not in opposition to Darwin's ideas. In chapter ten, he introduces "the one true tree of life" delving into various belief systems of taxonomists and cladists. In chapter eleven, various "doomed rivals" to evolution are dissected. These include naturalists, selectionists, mutationism, Lamarckian evolution, something called molecular drive, and creationism (both instantaneous and guided evolution theories).Dawkins asserts his final conclusion to the matter stating that adaptive complexity is a property of living things that is explicable only by Darwinian selection where chance is filtered cumulatively by selection, step by step.To those interested in adding to their knowledge of the subject, this is one more book to add to your reading list.

Chekhov: Scenes from a Life, by Rosamund Bartlett

From Publishers Weekly

Anton Chekhov (1860–1904) is primarily known to Americans as a brilliant playwright of late 19th-century soulful Russian malaise. But he also wrote farces for the stage, as well as collections of short stories, from early comedic sketches to the more serious fare that defined his mature style. According to British scholar Bartlett (Wagner and Russia), Chekhov's range grew out of a restless spirit of adventure and love of travel. Bartlett calls her biography "deliberately impressionistic," which is an apt description, since she organizes it by place, from her subject's childhood on the steppes to Moscow, the far reaches of Siberia and beyond. This can lead to some confusion and the necessity to return to the same events repeatedly, but the book succeeds in ways that chronological biographies cannot. Using Chekhov's correspondence with relatives, editors and friends, as well as a knowledge of the geography and history of the Russian empire, Bartlett brings an era to life. Although long trapped by the official Soviet account of his life, Chekhov is here revealed as a man deeply attached to both natural settings and his relationships with the people around him. I am glad that Amazon provides a "look inside" for Rosamund Bartlett's "Chekhov: Scenes from a Life." This inside look shows the tremendous research which Bartlett did for the book. It shows her expertise on not only Chekhov but Russian literature. I have learned much from this book as well as the resources on the Internet in which Bartlett is interviewed or presenting a lecture. I give this book a five star rating without hesitation. Anyone wishing to know about Chekhov will benefit from "Chekhov: Scenes from a Life." Yes, there are challenges with the book. Russian names and places, plus the many dates. My one suggestion is more maps might be beneficial. But with Google Maps, one can certainly follow along as one reads. Thank you Rosamund Bartlett for your continued gift of research on Russian literature. Looking forward to reading you book on Tolstoy.

Bartlett, Rosamumd. Chekhov: Scenes From a LifeThis Free Press Edition (published in 2005) was a welcome edition to my library. Having plodded gamely through Bartlett’s authorative book on Tolstoy I found Chekhov: Scenes from a Life an easier read and equally informative. As ever Bartlett’s research is thorough and her style engaging. Those interested in Chekhov the man, as opposed to Chekhov the writer, will find much to enjoy in the book. If I have any reservations about the book, they are not about the stucture, which is basically chronological, but the writer’s dwelling on fine details about, for instance, the nature of Chekhov’s dogs, their names, origins and where they slept in Melikhovo, as well as the plants he grew, the fish he caught (or failed to catch) and suchlike trivia - all this did rather test my patience. Of course with any book about Russia or Russians one has the problem of names, the use of full names, nick-names and patronymics can, and usually does, provide a stumbling block.Bartlett’s use of secondary materials, such as letters, diaries and other books is somewhat overwhelming to the non-specialist in the Russian language, but that is hardly the author’s fault. I found the ample Notes section amost unreadable, needing much help translating Russian titles. But it too had its interest in that, for example the title of Chekhov’s ‘A Boring Story’ is probably a misleading translation, for the Russian word would be better translated as ‘wearying’ or ‘desolate.’ Incidentally I notice that Bartlett frequently uses the word ‘boring’ herself in relating Chekhov’s attitude to people who pursue him, gossips, and nuisances in general. He comes over as a rather irritable, short-tempered man, which may of course be attributed to his illness, his many pursuits or his disputes with publishers. On the whole, though, Bartlertt refutes the general assumption that Chekhov was a thorough-going misanthrope. He was merely selective about making close friends, and when he found one in Alexei Suvorin, an older self-made writer and the owner of New Times, Chekhov was overjoyed, despite the commuting distance and the age differences between them. ‘There was no one he found as thought-provoking, no one who seemed so well-read,’ declares Bartlett, which no doubt goes some way to explain why he found others, by contrast, somewhat ‘boring.’

Did Chekhov use autobiographical material for his fiction? Someperhaps, he did deny it though!Maxim Gorky's description of Anton Chekhov, "beautifully simplehimself, he loved everything simple, real, and sincere."Now is the time for retranslating Chekhov. There are few who haveresponded: Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky (not this book).Professor Rosamund Bartlett translations are made from texts andnotes hitherto unavailable. All of the above mentioned have seenthe changes in language over the years and have done something about rendering Chekhov into contemporary English. This is a book about where he travelled to and scenes in which helived. All to the good for our better understanding andappreciation of this extraordinary author.Dag StombergSt. Andrews, Scotland

Amazing. Sad ending though. I cried. Read cause it is so good. Good for ages 10+ though fine for adults.

A fantastic read aloud book for a 6-10 year old. A 10 year old girl protagonist risks her life in a war zone to help her grandmother. Lot's of warm loving characters, lots of adventure, some terribly sad moments but it is never too gory or scary. A great book to read with a child and discuss war and its effects. Very moving, should be up there in the classics of children's literature.

This book is about refugees in the Lebanon war. To be honest I was not to interested in this book, however this book is great for school assignments or something like that. I recommend it and it's interesting just not like super amazing.-Zach age 11

This well-written novel tells of Ayesha's challenge in finding medicine for her sick grandmother during Beirut's war-torn years. Ayesha crosses the notorious "Green Line" that divided the city during the war, and the book shows the challenges of war and how there are always good people on both sides, while maintaining its appropriateness for middle-grade readers. Highly recommend.

Review

“At once a powerful satire and an ode to a collaborative art form, this delightful novel will have readers scratching their heads, retracing their steps, and delighting anew in the art of translation, including Ramadan’s own skillful work here.” ― Publishers Weekly“Here is a thrilling meta novel originally written in French - a peek into the mind of an obsessive, and increasingly unstable translator. Written entirely of footnoted annotations, it’s about a French translator translating a fictional work back into its original language, attempting to justify his growing changes to the text.” ― Librairie Drawn & Quarterly“…stuffed with symbols, mises en abyme, and direct and indirect comments that state or suggest that we cannot know where the limits of fiction and pretence lie and how far they extend.” ― Erike Fülöp, University of Hamburg“Matthieussent’s novel is a revenge indeed, a postmodern tour de force where the notions of original, translation, source and target texts, author and translator, are blurred to the point of becoming irrelevant, shedding a whole new light on the concepts of faithfulness and creativity, and redefining typographical and cultural spaces.” ― Pierre-Alexis Mevel and Dawn Cornelio, University of Nottingham“We are at the heart of Literature, with its capacity to make the real vibrate, to reach it using words.” ― Le Monde"Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant… worthy of our Umberto Eco.” ― Riccardo, Rossiello, SoloLibri

Don’t be fooled by their picture! The cover is not a shiny gold but different shades of plain yellow print. It’s definitely not as pretty in person. The cover was described as tough, so I thought it would hard but it’s more bendy like the cover of a paperback book. I guess the notebook is worth $5 but I think I probably could have found something cuter at Target.

This does NOT look like the picture. If you are purchasing because you think the gold is shiny, don't do it. Actual notebook is dull and matte so it is not as cute in person.

I have never seen a cuter little notebook before in my life!! I will so totally re-buy this thing =)

Great notebook! As described. The pattern is cute and the spine is holding up well.

Beautiful composition notebook

Very pretty! Looks shiny in the picture but it is not shiny at all, doesn't lessen the appeal though.

This journal is perfect! It is the perfect size for what Ill be using it for. The cover is so smooth. Definitely recommend

When not on the overland trail between Cairo and Istanbul, she can usually be found among the fairy chimneys of central Anatolia where she is attempting to renovate a cave-house.

Review

“In addition to being a fascinating and colorful read, this book is an indispensable guide to organizational change.” –Walter Isaacson, from the foreword   “This is a bold argument that leaders can help teams become greater than the sum of their parts.” —Charles Duhigg, author of The Power of Habit   “Team of Teams is erudite, elegant, and insightful. An unexpected and surprising wealth of information and wonder, it provides a blueprint for how to cope with increasing complexity in the world. A must read for anyone who cares about the future—and that means all of us.” —Daniel Levitin, author of The Organized Mind   “Team of Teams is a compelling, pragmatic argument for a more information-rich, decentralized approach to management from a leader who has successfully weathered storms with higher stakes than most business leaders will ever encounter. A must-read book for anyone serious about taking their leadership further, faster.”—John Venhuizen, president & CEO, Ace Hardware Corporation   “General Stan McChrystal’s Team of Teams is an instant classic. Best leadership book I have read in many a decade, by one of our nation’s most gifted and iconic general officers.”—Admiral James Stavridis, USN (Ret), Supreme Allied Commander at NATO 2009–2013; dean, The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University   “The lessons and concepts outlined in Team of Teams provide a valuable blueprint for leadership across any industry or domain. The principles of classical leadership struggle to deal with today’s pace of change, free-flow of information, and the entrepreneurial spirit of the digital generation. Team of Teams harnesses these new realities as assets, providing a leadership framework to produce the inclusiveness and adaptability of a fast-moving start-up, at the scale of any size organization.” —Brad Smith, president and CEO, Intuit   “In Team of Teams, General Stanley McChrystal, who won some of our most striking victories in the great war between nations and terrorist networks, shares insights for all in this lucid, persuasive, and sometimes wrenching account of our troubled yet transformational times.” —John Arquilla, professor, Defense Analysis United States Naval Postgraduate School   “In the fast-moving world of today and tomorrow, organizations that don’t adapt will simply fade. Team of Teams makes this case in compelling ways. I literally could not put the book down.” —Peter Bergen, author of Manhunt: The Ten-Year Search for Bin Laden from 9/11 to Abbottabad”

If you’re worried that a book with this title by a prominent retired General is just another version of “Super leadership secrets of the Navy SEALs” don’t worry. The lessons in Team of Teams: New Rules of Engagement for a Complex World were learned in war, a crucible that produces a lot of innovation. In this case, the innovation is in thinking about what most business writers call “management” or “leadership” or “organization,” and it’s one of the best books I’ve read on those topics.A decade ago, Gary Hamel and Bill Breen asked us to cast our mind “forward a decade or two” and ask what management will be like then. That was in their excellent book The Future of Management. Guess what? They got some things right, but missed a lot because they were the early warning system. Team of Teams is the latest report on today’s best thinking. The through-line of the book is about the formation and evolution of the Joint Special Operations Task Force. It is the story of the quest for members of that task force to find and defeat Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. It is not a story about a planned change. What McChrystal and his co-authors write about is an iterative evolutionary process of developing to understand and adapt to defeat an organization that was better suited for the modern battlefield than they were. It is also the story of how General Stanley McChrystal’s understanding of his role as the task force leader evolved. If he had stopped there, this would be another “this is how I did it” book. But McChrystal supplemented his experience with extensive research. Two Different ModelsIn the beginning, the Task Force confronted Al-Qaeda in Iraq with a typical Industrial Age organization. It was designed to thrive in a complicated world, where relationships were linear and organizations strove primarily for efficiency. For that reason, the Task Force, like the rest of the Army, was hierarchical, with decisions moving up and down the chain of command. The task force relished planning, and had a culture of making decisions at the top.Al-Qaeda in Iraq was very different. Their organization was suited to today’s complex world. They shared information horizontally in an essentially flat organization. They were resilient because they were made up of many small units with freedom to act as fast as information-sharing suggested it was a good idea.In the beginning, Al-Qaeda in Iraq had the upper hand. Chapter 1 of the book outlines that situation.“To win, we had to change. Surprisingly, that change was less about tactics or new technology than it was about the internal structure and culture of our force – in other words, our approach to management.”The Task Force structure was the typical Army structure. It’s also the typical organizational structure since the Industrial Revolution. Those organizations are great at efficient execution of known and repeatable processes. McChrystal and his team concluded that efficiency is no longer enough. The challenge for the Task Force and for most organizations today is that technological changes have speeded up the world and made it more interdependent. In the old industrial world, complicated challenges would succumb to careful analysis. That made them predictable. Today, a fast-paced interdependent world is a complex phenomenon. Analysis doesn’t help much here. Instead of planning and prediction, what the task force found that it needed was resilience and adaptability. That requires a different style of management as well as different structure.McChrystal compares a command structure to a team. In a command, hierarchy, planning and executing the plan were the way to succeed. But, if you’ve ever been part of a great team, either a military team or a sports team or a business team, you know that teams are qualitatively different from commands.Teams are usually small but characterized by trust and information-sharing. Great teams grow by collaborating in several successful ventures. Working together is how teams learn what teamwork is for them. Team members learn each other’s strengths and weaknesses and tendencies. That’s why, on most great teams, there is almost a sense that each team member knows what the others are thinking.Transparency and information-sharing do not come naturally to most organizations, or even to most teams. For the task force to achieve what it needed to achieve, it had to go through several iterations where everything, ultimately, came up for review. By the end of the series of changes, the physical spaces where the teams worked were different, and almost every procedure had been changed in some way.McChrystal uses SEAL teams as his model for a great team. The book describes basic SEAL training and team development, and in the process, gives a different picture than most treatments of the SEALS. McChrystal and his team point out that the primary purpose of SEAL training is not to develop super fit warriors as much as it is to develop the interdependence and trust you need to function effectively as an elite combat team. Again and again, the book returns to trust and transparency and collaboration as keys to the way organizations can work in today’s environment.Other books that I’ve read have done a good job of describing elements of the kind of team organization that McChrystal and his co-authors are outlining. This book is different in two important ways. First, the book describes the development of team thinking in an organization that had to adapt to win. What results is a real-world example of actual changes that almost certainly would not have happened if some planning committee had tried to come up with them. The second thing the book does is bring in research in many different fields to explain why some of the changes they made in a process of trial and learning work the way they do. What that means for you, the reader, is that you don’t have to look at McChrystal’s experience and the team he and his colleagues developed as the only way things can work. You can learn from their experience, but adapt to your experience because of the additional insights the book brings you. There’s another big benefit to this book. Most of the key points about what makes a great team were things we already knew. McChrystal’s book puts them into a framework that’s helpful, but the book goes on to talk about how you expand that sense of trust and that transparency to a larger organization. The truth is that one reason teams can have the transparency and trust they do is that they’re small. Most combat teams are six to eight people at the most. The largest athletic teams may have 85 players, but only a core of maybe twenty work together regularly enough to develop a team chemistry. McChrystal and his co-authors describe techniques that can expand the trust, transparency, agility, and resilience model to a larger organization. That, alone is worth the price of the book, but you wouldn’t understand it without the 130-some pages that come before it.Bottom LineIf you’re interested in or concerned about the ways organizations must change to be effective in a complex and fast-moving world, this book is a must-read. If you want a good study of team dynamics, this book will be worth your time. It will also be a good read for you if you’re intrigued with the military aspects of this, how the Joint Special Operations Task Force adapted to be more effective in Iraq.Overall, Team of Teams: New Rules of Engagement for a Complex World is the best answer I’ve seen so far to the question Gary Hamel and Bill Breen asked a decade ago.

The stereotypical U.S. military general is a different figure for each of us, depending on our own experiences and attitudes toward the armed forces; and possibly also depending on the day of the week. Some may picture a cigar-chomping, trigger-happy warrior with an outsized ego. Others, a well-read, scholarly man-of –the world who thinks very deliberately about the lives that can be affected by his every decision. Still others may view the general as politician: after all, how else could a woman or man rise to the very top of the hierarchy if not for use of MacArthur-like charismatic flair to step over all challengers on the ladder to the top?If “Team of Teams” is an honest reflection of Stanley McChrystal’s views on what it takes to lead organizations that deal with the complex challenges brought about by the volume and speed of 21st century information, this ex-commander of the US Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) in Iraq, may be a guy who will shatter some stereotypes about general officers. And, he deserves the ear of anyone, in any human endeavor, who wants to lead. This is a general who speaks of his leadership role as that of a gardener. And a good gardener works hard, knowing the plants and the soil intimately. Some of the book's critics have said that there is little new offered in the way of management theory. Possibly true: as a student of Agile leadership, I didn't see any novel ideas presented. Yet in the examples provided and the unique juxtaposition of ideas, "Team of Teams" offers something persuasive and memorable.McChrystal and his team of co-authors weave a series of gripping short stories about business successes and failures into the narrative, serving both to make “Team of Teams” an engrossing read, and to powerfully illustrate their viewpoint that successful leadership and management requires much different emphases than the focus on efficiency which made companies such as General Motors great in the 20th century. Whether contrasting the fates of two different passenger airline flights which ran into trouble while airborne, or candidly admitting the failures of JSOC to stop Al Qaida violence under his own command, McChrystal and his team relate each story to their central thesis that adaptability, information-sharing and decentralized authority have replaced efficiency and centralized decision-making as more and more 21st-century world challenges cross the threshold from being complicated (lots of moving parts, but potentially understandable) to complex (too many variables moving too quickly for any single human genius to master). This is a general who will tell you that trust and “shared consciousness,” both of which have to be cultivated, combine to form the epoxy that hold the 21st-century organization together. One powerful image found in “Team of Teams:” that the successful organization is no longer as a “well-oiled machine,” but rather, a “living organism.” The point is not that the organism no longer needs to stay in great shape, but rather that living organisms succeed to the extent that they respond appropriately and rapidly to the constant changes that take place both within it, and in its surroundings.Of the many stories and real-life examples which McChrystal’s team of authors use to buttress their case, the remembrance of British Admiral Horatio Nelson’s stunning victory over the combined French and Spanish fleets at Trafalgar in 1805 is a tale that contains many pearls for someone who wants to lead according to the “Team of Teams” approach. It is an oversimplification to say that Nelson broke naval convention by allowing his captains to break ranks and engage the enemy at will, without taking central direction from the flagship. The British victory had been years in the making, as Nelson had worked long and hard to develop his captains into the kind of team that would be capable of success in a naval engagement where anticipating each other’s actions was more important than which side had the superior firepower. The lesson for today’s leaders: it is not merely about turning people loose, but moreover about equipping them with the right tools, building the team mindset, focusing them on the common mission, and then trusting them to act in real time, in response to the ever-changing environment.“Team of Teams” should be read by anyone who wants to understand how to apply Agile leadership to their particular team, whatever the industry, sport, or other team endeavor.

I would recommend this book - if you are interested in taking your teams to the next level. If you work in agile or scrum and want to achieve superior performance, or are just interested in thinking about where to go next with agile, this book is worth the read. Like it or not we are in a complex world and if you think mastering chess will equip you to deal, think again. It is not just the rules that have changed - it’s the whole game. We are in uncharted territory in many areas, and if we don’t adapt, technology, networks and the hackers of the systems will steamroll you. Really enjoyed the book and the recaps, one of the best books I’ve read, it helps you contemplate where you need to go next!!!
