Nicholson embellishes Chaucer's work, which does not need such additions, and changes words to fit his sentiment rather than keeping with the meaning of Chaucer's original. Examples:Chaucer: Whan that Aprille with his shoures soote ...Nicholson: When April with his showers sweet with fruit ...Chaucer: To Caunterbury with full devout corage, ...Nicholson: To Canterbury, full of devout homage, ...Corage means heart or spirit, NOT homage.I recommend an interlinear translation, it keeps the translators honest, and allows you to see where they have deviated from the original.

I found this book in a search for a resource to help me improve my logical discourse. After reading several reviews, I decided this was the one.I really like this book and the style of writing. It has motivated me to look more into the subject. The fallacies and errors listed are discussed in accessible language and a perfectly abbreviated format (i.e. not too long, not too short). Nice, real-world examples are given to make the discussion very clear. My only reservation with giving this 5 stars is that the fallacies are listed in alphabetical order. That's great for an encyclopedia but awful for someone trying to learn. Many fallacies and errors are related and should be grouped together in chapters. In the ebook version, related fallacies, when referenced in order to show how they are similar or dissimilar, are hyperlinked. However, I find this very distracting and difficult to navigate. A second edition with the fallacies grouped together in a cognitively-meaningful way would get 5 emphatic gold stars from me.Also, a note on other reviews. Many reviewers gave this low ratings because it has a "liberal bias." I find that the book was well-balanced with real-world fallacies from both sides of the aisle, if they fall on either side of the political aisle at all. Furthermore, anyone who has read this book for understanding would know that just because a fact makes you feel bad doesn't make it any less true.Give this book a go. It would be a great reference for those who have a little bit of experience with logical discourse and, if organized by a talented teacher, could easily be used in high school or college for any class that seeks to improve a student's logical reasoning abilities.

I got a copy of this book for my 10 year old. Then I decided that I needed to read it myself, in part as a reaction to having been in far more conversations around recent political events where some of the arguments made no sense to me. The book helped me understand how to recognize and address those kinds of arguments. It also has helped me to take a step back in discussions in other domains, including technical discussions at work.Having a framework for understanding these kinds of fallacies can help you to put a conversation in context, and be able to (more) calmly address the issues people are raising, rather than react emotionally and perhaps commit the same kind of fallacies yourself.While I can’t speak fully to the thoroughness of the discussion of the fallacies I found this to be a really good bit of background. My one complaint is that some of the examples are a bit forced, but the author still makes his point most of the time.Reading this book is a tool that can help you navigate conversations (especially political ones) be they on Facebook or in person.

It started out to be interesting, but then the author almost appears to lose interest in his own argument, or has gotten distracted by politics. Instead of continuing to present his material, he goes off on political quips. The book becomes more about why he dislikes Christians and Republicans. This happens about 1/4 the way into the book. Is this a book about debate tactics, or just an excuse to express his distain for his political opposites? Less politics. More subject matter. It is disappointing.

Very detailed explanations of logical fallacies and appropriate rebuttals. But I'd like more orginization. Maybe a chart to show the relationship between different fallacies? The book is a compilation of random fallacies, with mention of how the relate to one another (one may be a subset or opposite of another) but they are not ordered in a way that makes sense. Otherwise I would have given this book 5 stars. Good info- but poorly organized.

An excellent book. Finally, a very organized book to help ascertain, a truly logical argument. Having read this book at an opportune time, the presidential election, it helped me to clarify my thinking and see through some of the aberrant arguments. I felt in many cases the statements were not "correct" but could not put my finger on "Why" they were erroneous. That will not be happening any more, in a large part, with the help of this book. Thank You.

Starting with the cover this book has some funny stiff to it for sure. It makes you think and gives you a devil's advocate type of look at most arguments. It kinda makes me want to go to the water cooler at work just to practice my new learned skills. I received this product for free in exchange for my honest and unbiased review and believe it would be perfect for someone that debates a lot or like to have a different way to respond during their next discussion. Some of the fallacies reviewed in this book are Just Because, Spiritual Fallacy, Appeal to Authority, and Appeal to Fear to name a few. Each have a pretty good argument. With each of the fallacies an example is given, the mistake, the comeback, and the significance. I like that the book is current and mentions relevant areas of division in our country and political events. The political and religious views of the author are clear pretty early on and if you can get past that this book is a must read for various reasons, but I going to go with read it just because I said so.

The work book is a great help when reading the corresponding book. My mind was full of so much information and reviewing so many ideas that it necessitated writing it down at the moment I thought it, while reading the book. The work book also helps to steer you into an better thought plan, to organize your thinking and get it down on paper. Buy it and use it! The buy an extra workbook because you ARE going to want to share the book, but will NOT want to share your private thoughts in YOUR workbook!

I have not finished the book yet but have found it very helpful in dealing with past issues. I wasn't sure when I bought it that I really needed it but I've very glad I have it. Even if you don't really fit the co-dependent mold this workbook will help you sort through your childhood mess, see it for what it is, and begin to deal with it and start healing. It is presented in a very positive way and is straight forward and encourages you to be completely honest with your feelings. I highly recommend it.

Another amazing story by this author. All other books of hers I've ready have a surprising ending but not this one. With this book, you get exactly what you are expecting but it is incredibly well written and performed (audio version) and I held out so much hope that it would not end exactly as I suspected.I very much enjoy how much research she does into the topics she covers in her books. Each and every topic is so controversial and she writes about them in a way that makes is difficult at times to take a stance on one side or the other. This book is no exception. With capital punishment at the core of this story, I found myself vacillating on pro or con throughout. I laughed and I cried and I got angry many times during this book.I am always challenged when writing a review of her books...tell too little and I'm not sure it does the book justice...tell too much and risk spoiling it for the next reader.

This is the 3rd book I have read of hers and I can say with each one I love it even better than the one I have read before. I am a kidney transplant recipient so the transplant aspect of this book interested me so much. Then throw in the mix of capital punishment and religion and it was one that tugged at my heart strings and made me really like about a lot of things. I loved the research into this book especially how the transplant issues were so correct. The only thing I could say negative about it was when I was done reading, I just wasn't ready for the book to end.

This was a great storyline! The choice of life or death permeated this story and as Picoult often does, a curve is thrown that isn’t expected. I give it 4 stars simply because there were points that could have been sped up. But this book was easy to stay connected with and I read it over a weekend. As usual, the ending had me wanting to know more! A great read and would recommend it.

I read this for my book club and am I glad it was chosen. This book was wonderful. I found it hard to put down. I loved that we got to see each person's point of view through a chapter. The characters were relatable and the story was wonderful. It is a book that really made me think about what I believe a a Christian and as a Catholic and about the death penalty. It made me think about how one's like can change in the blink of an eye and the importance of putting one's self second.

I have become a big fan of Jodi Picoult and I have read several of her books. I would rate this book as good reading and worthwhile. As usual, the author does extensive research into the organ donation aspect. The plot was well planned and centered around several key players.There was also ample questions re capital punishment which had questions and answers for those for and against.I do not want to give away the story, so I will end by saying that this book is good reading and thought provoking.The theme of this book is all about a heart transplant between a condemned killer and a young girl who was slowly dying and in dire need of a new heart.Another book added to the list of a very talented writer who churns out one New York Times Best-Seller after another.Jodi Picoult never disappoints the reader and is always interesting and educational. Instead of glossing over, the author goes deep into her subject matter.Another gem to be added to Jodi Picoult's prolific talents.
