I liked this book a lot. The reading level is clearly at a youth level, but not childlike. I read it both for my own sake and as a grandparent. I learned a lot of history type information about the creators of Superman as well as the history of the KKK. It dawned on me I did not really know a lot about the actual history of the KKK.In regard to resisting the KKK, I had heard of Stetson Kennedy. It now seems my knowledge of him was slightly inaccurate and exaggerated. However I am quite sure he did a lot of good.I feel discussing a matter like the KKK without any racial terminology would be difficult. It is possible that certain terminology SHOULD be used so the issues can be clearly understood. Nonetheless I personally would not want a child to read this without parental input. My own children are now grown. I can still vividly recall one of my children watching a major network news show when a discussion of the "N - word" came on and the actual word was used. My child was in early grade school. She turned to me and asked me about the specific word. It was clear to me she had NEVER heard the word anywhere and that made me happy. That contrasted with my own experience as a child in the 1950's. Clearly the word was not being used at school or on the playground. But it was still a sobering experience for me and I was glad I was there to try to answer questions. I remember President Obama saying he thinks every generation gets better about this subject and I agree with him about that.Additionally there is a brief passage about a sub group in the KKK that engaged in a specific and gruesome type of physical torture. Parents should be aware of that. I refer to a brief narrative about corkscrews. There was also a passing discussion about Wonder Woman. According to this work, Wonder Woman, in addition to entertainment, spoke to females about domestic violence. I did not know that and it never dawned on me that Wonder Woman could be used to facilitate such discussion. I appreciate knowing that.

I found this a very readable, fascinating account of the creation of Superman and how this fictional superhero was used to fight the Ku Klux Klan. I've heard the story of Superman's creation before but not in as complete a fashion as is explained here. It's an interesting story about two Jewish teenagers growing up during the Great Depression who desperately wanted to join the comics industry. But neither could ever imagine their creation becoming the phenomenon it did. Unfortunately for them, they turned the copyright over to DC Comics (normal procedure at the time) and as a result didn't receive the benefits they should have. But Superman has throughout his history provided not only entertainment but the idea that good can defeat evil, even the real thing. The Ku Klux Klan may not have started out as an organization of evil but it certainly became one. What I didn't know was that it petered out after their extreme acts of violence got out of control. Reading about the deliberate reincarnation of the organization was a bit sickening, but ironically it seems that the people responsible for its recreation were more interested in money than ideology. Unfortunately, many of those who joined the organization did fully buy into the hate and fear that the organization encouraged and often acted on it, violently.Seeing these two stories come full circle when the Superman radio show decided to have Superman face an organization that clearly represented the KKK. This book represents the impact that even a fictional character can have on the history of a nation. The power of propaganda for good or evil can easily be seen in this story, a story that happens to be true. A great example of the kind of history book that children will want to pick up and read. There is however a lot of text here, more photos and extras would have been nice. But the story is compelling enough to make up for that, but reluctant readers will be put off by the amount of text. A great read though for more advanced readers.

The 1915 revival of the Klan was as much a business enterprise as it was one of hate. It’s sickning to think that as a non-profit shouldn’t be allowed to promote hatered. 80% of the KKK’s revenue went to a PR firm in Atlanta. And that is just in section 2. There is so much more. A very interesting book that weaves the history of the US,, the KKK, Superman, and WWII into a very interesting narative. They helped create many childrens programming techniques that we take for granted today.Well worth reading — easy to read.

While this book deals in a swift, readable, delightful style with this one very meaningful intersection of contemporary history and popular culture, it also tells us a lot about the history of the Ku Klux Klan and the character of Superman--why both came into being, how they evolved over time, and why both are still relevant today. And it also makes you love and appreciate the Man of Steel even more.

I like Helen B's review. I think the "sobriety" we feel when reading about the Klan was a little much for my 11-year-old, who didn't finish the book. I thought it was great and hope he will re-evaluate it as a teenager.

Actually entertaining and interesting to read! Would recommend to any age group that's interested in either comics or the downfall of the kkk in America.

Review

"Kyria Abrahams, former teen bride of a doomsday cult and seeker of salvation in slam poetry, tells the terribly funny story of her improbable life with candor, wit, and an unsparing eye for the perfect detail. Brilliant." -- Janice Erlbaum, author of Girlbomb: A Halfway Homeless Memoir"The funniest book I've ever read by a disfellowshipped Jehovah's Witness from Pawtucket. Very funny. Very, very funny. Very, very, very funny." -- Janeane Garofalo"Amazingly vivid and profoundly compelling. Twisted, touching, absurd, hilarious, and honest. A new kind of memoir." -- Wendy Spero, author of Microthrills"Kyria Abrahams can do the 'coming-of-age in a sea of eternal hellfire' story like nobody else. Her tale of an adolescence in the ranks of the Jehovah's Witnesses is irresistible, thanks to her hilarious, sweet, and knowing narrator." -- Bob Powers, author of Happy Cruelty Day!"Miraculous...hilarious....Simultaneously affectionate and aware, Kyria recounts a childhood and young womanhood that at once seems completely universal and breathtakingly bizarre." -- Adam Felber, author of Schrödinger's Ball and panelist on NPR's "Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me!""This acerbic, witty memoir chronicles the first 23 years of Abraham's life with candor and a good dose of comedy." -- Publishers Weekly"A natural writer whose prose flows effortlessly as she easily mixes throwaway humor and painful memories in a compelling narrative." -- Booklist"Undoubtedly the cleverest lapsed Jehovah's Witness yet, Abrahams offers a graphic, mordant, wickedly distaff take on her life." -- Kirkus"Hilarious, raw, and touching...Abrahams emerged to write about her experience in an honest, funny, and somehow relatable way." -- The Comedians "Abrahams provides readers with a profound anecdotal look of growing up as a Jehovah Witness" -- Harriet Klausner, Genre Go Round

One of my favorite memoirs. Hilarious, self-aware, and eerily familiar. Though my own journey out of the JWs was, obviously, a very different and personal experience, I still find her raw honesty and self-deprecating humor to be very refreshing. Although works like Reed's Blood On The Altar give a number of important facts and a run-down of the history of this virulent christian sect in all it's authoritarian, life absorbing splendor, this is a more personal journey of self-discovery, of growing up and learning about how to be an adult, experiment with sexuality, and find one's self.So often JWs leave this particular cult to join more mainstream versions of Christianity. I have no problem with someone being a christian on a personal level, I just rarely hear my story told in the literature critical of The Watchtower Organization. It's not explicit that she is, like myself, an atheist necessarily but she doesn't move from one organization to another, larger organization that teaches you what and how to think. She just moves on with her life, deals with the shunning and the lack of support with honesty and integrity. She's just an imperfect human trying to struggle and survive and make mistakes and learn and that's all any of us are. It's also very funny in parts. Sorry for the slipshod review, I don't wish to turn this into my life story. Everyone should give this a read, whether familiar with controlling fundamentalist communities or not.

I have my own history with the watchtower. Although I was never a witness most of my family is. I have spent years being preached to and feeling judged and doomed. I could relate to the author plus I was raised within 40 minutes where the book takes place. I must confess I almost stopped reading the book because I became repulsed at her life choices but unfortunately many former witnesses make similar choices (my best friend was disfellowshipped twice). Kyria is a very funny author but about half way through this book is not funny and it becomes a real bummer regardless of humorous lines placed throughout. I am glad the author has moved on and she seems to have found happiness.

This book was very easy to read and she kept me interested. I was a Jehovah's Witness for 15 years between ages 8-23. I am now 29. That being said, this book has bothered me for days now because I feel like she published a book that gives us ex-Jehovah's Witnesses a bad name. Not once since I left did I cheat on my boyfriend or sleep with my best friends boyfriends...like wtf?! She's just a bad person regardless of what religion she was raised in. I've dabbled in drugs and have sex outside of marriage but I still know how to treat people. She also doesn't leave the reader with a good impression on the people she met outside of the religion. Every single one of my friends that I've made since I left are amazing and loving people and have further proved that my decision to leave was the right choice.I do not respect Jehovah's Witnesses or their religious views any longer, but I do know the difference between "going wild" after leaving and just being a sociopath. I don't know. I'm just confused by her.

This was a humorous look into someone breaking away from a religion designed to make it as painful as possible to break away from.Having been sheltered to a painful degree, she goes through a very hard learning experience Most people do not have to. It's easy to judge and see all the mistakes she made but it's a lot harder to understand why she made those mistakes and acting so stupidly. As someone who has gone through the same thing, I understand completely where she was at and how she was making those mistakes. Your world perceptions are so flawed and skewed by this religion that you simply have no idea of the way the world works, practicality or even logic in general.I would've liked to have received a little more information at the end of the book. By the end of the book, you are heavily invested in the authors life story and it would've been nice to know where she was at in her life when she finally finished this book. Bravo on revealing so much and opening your story up to strangers. This reading has been like a therapy session for some of the issues I'm still dealing with from my recent parting with this religion and, unfortunately, my family/friends. Like you, I have new friends and family that are loving and accepting, more so than my relatives ever were.

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up—A communications toolkit for teens, most of whom have grown up with technology and may be in need of some life lessons on the importance of face-to-face communication. Interspersed throughout are helpful tips and stories from Kelly Skeen, the teenage daughter of author Michelle Skeen. The writers lay out simple steps, highlighting the significance of listening to others, learning to express thoughts and feelings clearly, and understanding others' perspectives. The second half features tips for effectively communicating in different circumstances, such as academic, career, and sexual situations. Like other titles in this series, the book provides easy-to-follow exercises and will be most useful to those relying on it as a how-to manual. VERDICT A valuable option for improving communication skills, especially as a reference for counselors or teachers.—Elaine Baran Black, Georgia Public Library Service, Atlanta

This book is a perfect guide for both teens and parents to understand necessary skills to navigate these confusing years. I loved the perspective of both mother and daughter with Dr. Skeen mainly contributing and incorporating her own daughter who writes parts of the book as well! How cute! If you are struggling at all with this communication issue, I strongly recommend keeping this book around the house as a resource for you and your teen.

My daughter (13) finds it good! I also use it in my practice! Double bonus!!

This is not a workbook but a co-authored book between parent and child. Therefore, I found it difficult to apply as a therapist for teens as they would have to read on their own or we would have to read during a session. I was looking for something for activity or skill based and this was more narrative/advice giving style writing. Not many teens want to read "self-help" books.

This book is part of a series of teen-targeted help books on topics like communication, anxiety, self-esteem, depression, etc. The book explains the still highly needed skill of communication even in today's highly digital and technological age. Skills like active listening, self-disclosure, expressing your needs, recognizing your hidden agendas, clarification, assertive communication, making new connections, sexual communication, family communication, and interviewing skills. The book can be read according to need, flipping to the desired chapter or as preferred read all the way through as most skills are needed. I liked that the book not only explained what the different types of communication include but also how to achieve them. Active listening for example would entail listening to understand them, to enjoy and appreciate the other person, to learn more about them, and to help via assistance or support. This is contrary to most of the cultures way of listening and getting distracted, just to let the other talk or wait for their turn to talk and voice their opinion. It also helps that there is excerpts from a teenager (Kelly Skeen) on the application of each concept and exercises for the reader to apply the newly learned skill. I really liked the layout. Very user-friendly with its organization into bullet points, subheadings, explanations, applications, exercises, etc. It made for a much more clear and quick read because it lost the fluff and was to the point. I was a little suspicious about sexual communication chapter, but in this day and age, or rather with how people in general are, it laid out some very important topics about when, why, knowing the emotional consequences as well as the physical consequences, going to parents about questions and examining if your actions match your values or the values you want to have. Still I would have liked more on the consequences and the importance of both age and maturity. I once was given the advice of don't do anything you are comfortable talking about. Are you old enough to handle and support any possible outcome of your actions? this question was not asked, but still for a non-religious resource it gave a lot of good advice on all aspects of communication and is practical for people of all ages, not just teens.

Communication Skills for Teens is a focused book discussing ways to deal with difficult situations as they relate to interpersonal skills. Written for teens, it doesn't talk down to them nor go over their head; it is straightforward and uses examples and sample situation to help illustrate the points. The addition of the author's daughter's experiences and how she handled situations add an effective peer-to-peer perspective. I chose this for my 12 year old who is starting middle school so she can get a heads up on working with others through the difficult teen years. The book breaks down as follows: Introduction, how to really listen, Letting others know you, Expressing what you feel and need, Recognizing hidden agendas, Understanding your beliefs and the beliefs of others, Assertive communication, Making new connections, Sexual communication, Family communication, Communication for academic and career success. Each chapter has an introduction, little call-outs from daughter Kelly, information on how communication on the topic is problematic, tips and examples for dealing with situations, and then a 'putting it all together' summary. What was important is that the examples were very relatable - both my daughter and I were able to identify several instances where friends/family had fallen into communication traps recently and in the past. It made for great discussions on how her friends are changing now with puberty. There is a bit of CBT (cognitive behavior therapy) in the form of keeping a notebook to write down instances where communication problems occurred. Although my daughter is 12 and therefore won't have need of the sex or job communication skills, nearly every other part of the book was highly useful and very useful to situations in which she'd found herself - even at that young age. Moreover, she had no problem reading and understanding the topics contained within.I found this to be a very useful book on a very focused topic that is so valuable. From making to keeping friends to interviewing for jobs, there are some really good points made using effective and relevant examples. For us, since my daughter is young, we were able to discuss the chapters together; even so, this is a book that is useful when read on its own as well. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

Featuring an overview of how to effectively communicate including listening! What book for teens wouldn't be effective if it didn't have a teen weigh in on every topic?I like that the author's teenage (college-aged) daughter provides the reader real-life examples. This book went into more than the basics of communication, with the three key communication style featured and discussed (passive, passive aggressive, and assertive) and was still written in a simple, clear-cut language and teens would enjoy and benefit from.

Informative and effective way to communicate, techniques, strategy and more. A source or direction to open up or to understand even express themselves hopefully this book will help. From what I had read, give it a try. I received a free book, winner Goodreads First Read Giveaway. Thank you, Darlene Cruz
