About the Author

Martin K.A. Morgan is a historian and expert on the American experience in World War II. He is the author of Down to Earth (Schiffer, 2004) and The Americans on D-Day (Zenith Press, 2014). I would be giving this one the five full stars even if Marty Morgan and I haven't known each other from various historical presentations for seven or eight years now. I was actually Marty's back-up slide flipper when he presented some elements of this work at the 2014 NRA Annual Meeting as "The Guns of D-Day Part II".Anyone with any interest in the Normandy landings has seen some of these pictures before. Marty's genius was to go back to the original negatives in many cases, blow them up bigger, and think about them. Let me explain a perfect example of this. There's a pic of 2nd Division men marching in from Omaha after the landings. It's a known pic. It was the cover of a 1990s paperback edition of Keegan's "The Second World War" that I have had since college. But looking more closely at it, why are a battalion's worth of frontline infantrymen in a M1 Garand-equipped army all carrying M1903 Springfields instead? Marty has found the answer and it is in the book. Repeat that dedication to lost details hundreds of times over, and you have the effort that it took for Marty to assemble "The Americans At D-Day".I don't know if this book could have been done twenty years ago. The book is a large enough format to display the photos well, and modern digital printing brings out the detail. The devil really was in the details this time around, and the details are what makes this book worth every cent.Marty, I'll see you in Nashville in '15 and you're signing this one for me.

While the cover over Americans on D-Day uses one of the best known shots from June 6, 1944 -- of men of the 16th Infantry landing at Easy Red -- this book is a beautiful addition to the huge library of books about D-Day because of the hundreds of pictures, described with clever detail that give the reader a comprehensive picture of the entire American experience during the invasion of Normandy. Pictures of spent 5-inch casings on the deck of the Nevada, small landing craft near supporting cruisers, documentation of the sheer enormity of the effort all give you an exhaustive, comprehensive appreciation for the magnitude. Accompanying these pictures, many of which are in color, are small vignettes and interesting detail that can be studied for hundreds of hours. Martin clearly poured extensive knowledge and years of research into this beautifully crafted book. The chapter focusing on the saga of the American paratroopers at Graignes is one of the finest I have ever read. I am pleased to have added this important volume on D-Day to my World War II bookshelves.

Tells every little detail about the amazing photos. I am always amazed with whatever Morgan presents.I only wish he had been my history teacher years ago. I got a deal on the book, but a problem that might keep folks from buying this great book is the price.

Morgan has written extensive text with superb detail after in-depth interviews with veterans, their families, and also residents and family in Normandy who witnessed these events. Every time a new book appears about a topic like D-Day I am a little suspicious wandering if it was simply published to generate sales, but not so with The Americans on D-Day. I am extremely pleased with this purchase. A number of new photographs and a great arrangement of the information about the battle. Those interested in D-Day will surely want to include this book in their personal libraries. Thank you Martin Morgan for this terrific tribute commemorating the 70th anniversary of the invasion of Europe. Thank you.

If you are looking for a book about D-day that not only provides you with information that you may not know but unseen photos, this is your book. Marty is an amazing historian that has such a wealth of knowledge, I learn something new every time we talk. I have both of his books and I have no problem stating that they are some of the best I have ever read. I also purchased this book for my grandfather, who was very impressed with it. I can not wait for the next Martin Morgan book :)

Wow, a great read. This is a book that anyone interested in World War Two must read. It is an exciting and easy read. A very comprehensive report of the D-day experience of the Americans.

Veteran punk writer and illustrator Road weaves text and art together in a charming and angst-ridden coming-of-age story. Cuban-American and raised in a traditional Catholic family, the preteen Road has a number of identity issues: she does not fit into her cultural mold, she finds salvation in punk rock, and she has a conflicted gender identity. To say that “Spit and Passion” is unlike any graphic narrative I’ve ever read would be a gross understatement. Cristy C. Road might very well have invented a unique genre with this book: the genderqueer Latina Bildungsroman (facilitated via punk pop—namely, Green Day) graphic narrative.And it’s very good. And very frank. Her language is rather salty, and her images are sometimes quite…well, graphic. Road does not hold back one iota as she traces the myriad sources of anxiety that bedeviled her middle school years. From her Latina heritage and the simultaneous love/condemnation she received from the adult women in her family to the unrequited crushes on female teachers to the excruciatingly cruel torment that is middle school (even for kids who are NOT genderqueer and/or bisexual) and the sweet temptation of a real-life girl crush, Road endures a gauntlet of emotional angst that rings true. Add to that her contemplative nature and her tireless quest to figure out why she’s feeling what she’s feeling and why she feels so bad about feeling what she’s feeling—and the result is a very powerful story of queer youth.All of its merits notwithstanding, I would certainly hesitate to teach this book to adolescents. Although it would be appropriate for mature adolescent readers, it would definitely be problematic as a class read. Just as some adult novels might be appropriate for young adult readers, “Spit and Passion” is a young adult graphic narrative that is appropriate for more adult readers. I hope that the teens who need to read this tale will seek it out and find it—but I doubt they will do so in an academic setting.

I've always known Cristy Road to be a multidimensional artist, playing in bands, writing and publishing zines, and producing amazing artwork. I even commissioned her to do the cover of a one-issue zine I did years ago. However, other than knowing she's a bit of an icon in the queer punk community, and must be a big Green Day fan based on her nom de plume, I didn't really know anything about her. This short-but-striking memoir of her life at ages 11-13 chronicles not only her home and school life, but her raging inner turmoil as she tries to work out her identity.It's a classic story of a kid from a loving, but somewhat repressive cultural context -- she grew up in a Cuban-American family in Florida with traditional Catholic attitudes toward homosexuality. School life is no better, as the misery of middle school in the early 1990s (cruel girls, idiotic boys, hormones everywhere) is further complicated by her inner sense of being different. Like so many alienated kids, Road finds consolation and connection in music -- in her case, the pop-punk of a Green Day tape loaned to her by another outsider at school.As someone who both also found connection through punk (in my case The Clash), and bought Green Day's debut EP, 1,000 Hours, when I was still in high school in 1989, I can completely understand the depth of her passion for her new discovery. So, even though I'm a middle-aged straight white guy and didn't face her agonies about sexual identity and otherness, her memoir still strikes a chord. And of course, her trademark illustrations and text is amazing as always. She's got such a bold, confident and distinctive style -- here sometimes deployed in ways that are more imaginative and grotesque than usual. Highly recommended for teens and tweens everywhere who don't feel like they belong.

I don't usually like graphic novels--but I'm glad that I took a chance with this one! This memoir is an amazingly rendered, spot-on story of what it's like to grow up feeling like an outsider and then have your whole life be turned around by the discovery of a favorite band. There's too few books out there that handle both music/nostalgia and also real issues with any kind of depth or integrity, and this book succeeds.

Road's drawings are incredible and this memoir is such a sweet gift for anyone who has ever felt like a weirdo or an outsider. I highly recommend it!

This book was hard to read. Not because of how the writer chose to write it, but because of all of the brain cell killing logic that only a radical feminist could relate to. I googled the writer and nothing popped up but things about fried chicken. I googled the title of the book and only feminist media had it featured. I couldn't stand reading this book.All I saw in this book was a story of a gilr who grew up crying and whining about everything, coming up with excuses for her weak actions and choices in life. For how much "important people" liked this book, its not all that popular.So why did I read this? Because I'm a Green Day... or I was a Green day fan. This girl is OBSESSED with Green Day. Green Day pops up in this book so much, you'd thing shed want to wear their skin around her house. Not only that, her depth in judging people is proven poor when, in the beginning, she relates everyones personality to Zodiac signs. She also says stuff in this book that totally demolish her point to what she was saying before.For example in the book she talks about being in middle school and being subjected to "gender inequality" because girls got secret deoterant and mascara, and boys got other deoterant and chewing gum. Then she says she was offended... offended enough to stuff what was given to her in the bottom of her bag "if she ever needed it." Why would she keep it.if she were truely offended.Honestly I think this book is nothing more than half truths told by a radical feminist who wanted attention, and had the money to pay for it. So unless you are completely out of touch with reality, enjoy reading poor me I had a hardish life where most of my struggles were my fault, I wouldn't buy this. If you're just curious, don't waist your money. Your local library will have it, and if not have them order it. This is not worth the price its set for.

I have read a number of books on Business Continuity Planning. This book is by far the best. I have suggested to my business contacts to read this book and they all say they have benefited from the information. Even if your company decides not to develop a complete plan, you will find valuable steps you can take that will reduce your disaster risk easily and without major funding. It is set up like a workbook and takes you logically and methodically through the planning process from start to finish. I found it particulary beneficial that this guide enabled me to clearly explain to senior management the importance of developing a plan and the steps we should follow to develop ours. The book may not be for the seasoned BCP planner, but it is an invaluable resource for those of us who need to know the right questions to ask and what to do with the information once you get the answer. The CD-ROM that is included provides easy to follow worksheets, forms, samples and links to other resources that can be found on the Internet.Mr. Fulmer has done us a great favor by putting this step-by-step guide together. I highly recommend it to anyone who newly faces this callenging task or needs to update their existing plan.

This book is mainly about Matilda and I enjoyed reading it. She had a fascinating life because even though she was the daughter of Henry I, she was treated as property, a brood made that Henry married to Emperor Heinrich of the Holy Roman Empire. Reading about their marriage and how Empress Matilda was treated by her father after Emperor Heinrich passed away is unreal. Empress Matilda helped her husband rule their empire yet her father and the Norman Barons only saw her as a woman.I highly recommend this book. And I look forward to reading the six books before this book.However, I was disappointed that there was not a lot about the time period between "King" Stephen stealing the throne and the war with Empress and true Queen of England Matilda and Stephen naming Matilda's son Henry as his heir. That, in my opinion, is the most interesting time as it is also the beginning of the Plantagenet Dynasty.A great follow up book would be Eleanor of Aquatine but unfortunately that hasn't happened. Yet!I was provided a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review.

I loved this book! It was informative, well written, and I learned much that I had never known about Matilda of England, daughter of Henry I Plantagenet, King of England, and the granddaughter of Malcolm III Canmore, King of Scots. It isn't overly long and is actually easy to read. One doesn't get bogged down in a lot trivia, but the historical characters are brought to vivid life. Margaret, who was my 23rd gr-grandmother, grew from an intelligent child to an intelligent woman, married at age 8 to Henry V who was to become the Holy Roman Emperor and she its Empress as well as the King and Queen of Germany. The charts, lineage and timeline of people and events at the end help one to better understand the history of that far away era. The only fault I found was that a little more attention to the editing would have been helpful. I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book, through Reading Deals, so I could give an honest review. I did that.

I just passed the exam with a score of 834 and have already passed the 70-697 exam. There is some overlap in the material in the 2 exams ( I used William Paneck's book for the 697).The material is OK, but it doesn't go into much depth, there are a lot of links to MS web pages for more detailed info. It would be nice if they at least included a website that has all of the links in a clickable format. The URLs are usually long and a pain to type accurately.Also - no practice questions included! Paneck's 697 book included an assessment test, practice questions after each chapter, and 100 practice questions on a website for about the same price as this book. I also thought Paneck's book prepared me better for the test, although you won't pass the test just by reading either book.

I don't know if I've just been spoiled by other books while studying for various certs, but this book has a lot left to be desired. No practice tests. No glossary. Nothing specifying what's really important for the exam. A lot of "Here's a link go study it." To be fair I haven't take the exam yet, but reading through it once I have no way to gauge whether I have grasp of what's on the exam. Practice test questions would go a long way.

Book has some great info. But leaves much to be desired as far as the exam was concerned. There are several links directing you to "learn more here". Um, I can't click on this paper book and get to that site geniuses. You think I'm gonna type all that out?! JUST PRINT IT! Some stuff goes into detail, some are just instructions; click here then here then here. Also seemed out of date. Guess you should wait until May for the new version to come out. Where that one will be out of date shortly after..

It's a good reference for the test. The way it's set up you're basically going through tons of exercises (ie - work through it at your computer with a purchased or eval copy of Win10). The amount of material covered is deep and the thought exercises at the end are a nice touch and good review for the test. I only wish there was more online test prep material form the publisher (a la Sybex) or something beyond the many, many, many references to "Wanna learn more - got to this TechNet article".

Great book. Wish it came with a CD that included a practice test, like these books used to have. But still very much worth the cost.

Took the exam today and passed, no thanks to this book. I'm really baffled about what was on the exam in comparison to all the topics that surround installing and configuring windows 10. Exam tip-learn powershell, because at least half of the exam references cmdlts and partitioning disks. This book is great for knowledge of windows 10, as far as passing the exam, useless.

This is pretty dry reading, and I would recommend the paper version of this text, since the Kindle version does not have any page numbers. It's essentially one, long document with 12,000 location markers (and it's not very clear where they are. They change according to how you size your text). It seems like the information is solid, but not exactly easy reading for a beginner (it assumes you know what a SQL server database is and how to create one). Following some of the instructions in the practice examples are not exactly clear, you will need to tweak them a little if you're running them on your own system, and pretty much know what you're doing already (or be prepared to figure it out on your own - which I suppose has it's own benefit). Furthermore, it's lacking a glossary, and any self- or practice tests, So there is no way to assess your knowledge. A video series to accompany this would be helpful, produced for the lay-person, new to the idea of installing an operating system on a large number of systems, beyond a simple LAN/home system. If you are using this text in a class, hopefully you have an instructor and/or students who you can turn to for questions, should have any (and you probably will).

My book goes from page 288 and straight to page 353. It's missing pages. I didn't even realize it until I was trying to read chapter 8. How horrible. We have assignments for each chapter. How awful.

Be wary when buying this book. They do not know the difference between vol. 1 and vol. 2. I ordered Vol. 1, for my 4 week History class but ended up receiving Vol. 2. I am now bookless and there is no time for me to get the book I actually need.

Ok, this is for a class. This is the vol2 from the Civil War forward. My only gripe is that this is a "brief" version, so for the sake of a class timeline, so far, there is no depth into certain important historical events. Then again, that self-explains the "brief" version. The author covers all the major events but if your looking for something in-depth on the topics, you may want to try his full version which is lengthy.

I needed this book for an online US History class. I learned a lot while reading this book however, it was quick and didn't explain as much as I would have liked it to. It's like sitting in a class where you have so much to learn and there is no room for questions because it needs to go quick. That's how it felt reading this book. The text was simple to understand which was good.

I knew Dr. Foner was a brilliant scholar and writer after reading some of his shorter work and taking part in his eye-opening free online course on the Civil War and Reconstruction, so when I saw that he had written a textbook on American history, I was immediately interested to see how his style would translate to the textbook genre. I have not been disappointed. I am curious, though, how much I am missing by not getting the full edition with all of the extra material; however, I could not be more pleased with this concise, yet thorough treatment of American history--and for a reasonable price for a full, comprehensive text like this. Truly great. (Also, do yourself a favor and check our his book The Fiery Trial, and his online course mentioned above. You won't regret it.)

Hey all,this is actually the second book of the Give Me Liberty series by Eric Foner that I have reviewed and it is every bit as fantastic as the first one if not even better than the first!! While the first one pretty much focused on the early history of the Republic. This picks up where the first left off(Reconstruction to the beginning of Barack Obama's second term)and I have to say "Oh my, what a history book!." This book is the greatest that I have ever read on US history!!! I won't go too much into detail as I would be writing one lengthy review that might take the entire night and I don't feel like doing that right now! All I can say is if the future of our country(United States of America) and the world matters to you please read this book!!! You won't regret it!! My Dream US History book set has finally come to fruition(I hope this also book gets assigned more often in history classes or actually replaces the previous books I mentioned in my other review) and I have a brilliant scholar and historian in the name of Eric Foner to thank! Thanks again very much Prof. Foner! 5 stars!!!. Highly recommended read!!

I used this for History 102 and it was my first amazon rental. The price beat out all available rental competition for Fall semester in 2016. The return is free and simple. I just kept the box it came in and removed the old tag and put the new one on when I had to return it. I would definitely use their rental program again.

Required text for American History at college. I was familiar with the post-Civil War era but I learned quite a bit by just sitting down and pre-reading this book before my classes started. A very honest look at American History without much bias in any one direction or the other. After reading the first few chapters you'll suddenly realize that America hasn't changed much as far as repeating itself.

As a 20+ year travel veteran, I can say this is one of the worst travel books I've ever bought. Time after time I was shocked at how limited the information was in this book for everything we saw and did. The thinnest of descriptions, whether a major historical or cultural site. And the maps are practically useless. Fodor's really needs to up its game before I'll buy another of its guides.

First, I would like to thank counselorchick, Kevin Johnson, bankee and any others who have obvious resentments towards AA. It is a program developed in the 1930’s and has been the most effective treatment for their members. It is a fellowship of men and women who have the same desire to stay sober. People who follow the program and commit to it eventually become happy, joyous and free. The program has evolved over time to what it is today. People who are cursed with this disease are NOT able to drink in moderation. I am not saying that I completely believe in the entire philosophy but most of it has merit. I think it is opalling and disgraceful for anyone to blame AA for hurting more people than they’ve helped! Are you f*****g kidding me? There is only one person to blame for the behaviors we exubed. Look in the mirror for the guilty party. The negativity in these posts truly proves how restless, irritable and discontent you are. I’m sure there are other programs that successfully help those with the disease of addiction. AA is not for everyone. It is also never AA’s fault when someone relapses. We are still there at every meeting, trying to help the next sick and suffering person.Your portrayal of the “program” is flawed and inaccurate to say the least. There have been 100’s of thousands of people who are now happy, joyous, free and living a life free of anger, depression, sadness and fear.

Simpley put this book will save your life and inspire you to find a path free of addiction . The first half of the book is how it works in AA the second half is all inspirational stories that truely do inspire you to live a better free of addiction life. Often at first when I first considered I might have an addiction problem I read the stories in the back of the book . I found every story I read was about me in some way . After a few reads I knew it was time to confront my addiction issues . Becuse of this book I am now free of my alcohol addiction and starting to piece my life back together . Any time I feel weak or need a bit fo inspiration I open the book and read for a while .This book is the back bone to AA and 12 step programs it will sve your life if you are honest ans willing . Its said you must hit rock bottom before you can make the journey to recovery but maybe if you read this book you will find a way that you can avoid the horor of the rock bottom experience. Good luck to you may you find the peace and serenity you so deserve in life give this book a shot and you will find a new way of life .

I'm not an alcoholic, but a good friend of mine suggested that I read this to gain a better understanding of "what she's all about." I'm truly glad I did. Not only did it deliver on her claim in spades, but it provided me with one hell of a perspective on everything she and so many others have dealt with, and just how vital a group like Alcoholics Anonymous is. I love reading things that provide me with that level of insight.

I’ve been sober almost six months. Thank god for AA and other such programs.About this book- it explains everything. First half talks about how AA came to be and last half shares inspirational stories of other addicts and alcoholics who have worked the program and now lead sober lifestyles. Very helpful and motivating.For anyone out there struggling with addiction, even if you aren’t ready to seek help, read this book. You at least will know you aren’t alone.

I'm so grateful for this book. My sweet daddy suffered from alcoholism and died unrecovered. Growing up in that, I had a lot of resentment and unresolved pain. This book showed me that my Dad was sick, and it helped me see that even though I do not drink- I was effected by alcoholism. Since I do not have this allergy/disease, I didn't understand it. It makes more sense to me now, and it has helped me on my healing journey. I cannot recommend this enough! I know you get audio chapters on Amazon (I believe it is the 1st Edition). I love the 4th edition. I believe it is worth buying even if you can hear it for free.

Don't get the Kindle version if you need to refer to page numbers. Cryptic "locations" (see pic) will not help if you want to use the "Big Book" for any serious work or study. There are plenty of free or online versions available that are paginated. As far as the actual content goes, who am I to argue with the cornerstone manuscript for a fellowship that has proven to help millions worldwide. IMHO modern medicine will never be able to come close to this free and ubiquitous prescription for dealing with ALL addictions (in MY lifetime at least).

Written many years ago and still relevant for todays alcoholic. I felt the book was telling my story and many times I was struck by the economy and perfection of the prose. i.e. 'a vision for you.' In my opinion this is very much an inspired novel that speaks directly to the alcoholic and offers a proven method of recovery and life seemingly beyond the reach of the active alcoholic....Indispensable information for the suffering alcoholics looking for recovery.

It’s nice to have this book available on Kindle. I use my phone, tablets, Mac and Kindle regularly, so this works well for me. The one thing that I would like to see different about this Kindle edition is to have the pages numbered just as they are for the paper book. The table of contents can help to locate specific information, but generally, I feel that this ebook still falls short. It would be far easier to follow along with other readers and references made about specific passages during meetings and when working with others. This edition doesn’t do this, so I don’t like to use the ebook at meetings. I would love to be able to go to a specific page and have the book handy wherever I go. Other than that, this ebook is still nice to have whenever I want to read it.
