Merry Hall, by Beverley Nichols

Review

"Though written half a century ago, "Merry Hall" captures that longing for the garden and a patch of land to call one's own. Nichols's wit and silly adventures ... add a bit of welcome hilarity to the all-too-serious literature of gardening." Anne Raver, "New York Times," February 27, 2000"

About the Author

Beverley Nichols (1898–1983) was a prolific writer on subjects ranging from religion to politics and travel, in addition to authoring six novels, five detective mysteries, four children's stories, six autobiographies, and six plays. He is perhaps best remembered today for his gardening books. The first of them, Down the Garden Path, centered on his home and garden at Glatton and has been in print almost continuously since 1932. Merry Hall (1951) and its sequels Laughter on the Stairs (1953) and Sunlight on the Lawn (1956) document Nichols' travails in renovating a Georgian mansion and its gardens soon after the war. His final garden was at Sudbrook Cottage, which serves as the setting for Garden Open Today (1963) and Garden Open Tomorrow (1968). The progress of all three gardens was followed avidly by readers of his books and weekly magazine columns.

Rather than reviewing each Nichols book separately, I will just say I have LOVED all of his books about gardening in England. Continuing to laugh out loud is my reward for reading each book several times. I gave Merry Hall to a new neighbor, editorial director, and Master Gardener, who was overwhelmed by the money-pit feeling of being a first-time home owner of a truly charming house built in the 1930s. She thought he was hilarious.

One of the book catalogs that I occasionally get in the mail has been singing the praises of the late Beverley Nichols. Besides writing mystery novels, he also wrote about his adventures in renovating and resurrecting a home in the suburbs of London just after WWII. First published as a collection of magazine columns, he would later on assemble them into a trilogy of books. The first of the trilogy, Merry Hall details his search, at times frustrating, for the perfect house and garden. Very soon he became aware of what land agents (realtors for us Yanks) really meant in their ads, and he started to see his hopes plummet as his hopes were continually dashed. But one listing caught his eye, and with a good friend, he took the journey out of London to look the place over. The estate, spreading over five acres are a compendium of every gardening mistake. Ghastly ornaments litter the grounds -- the previous owner was very fond of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs). And the house, a lovely Georgian mansion, isn't much better. While it hasn't fallen down yet, there are 'additions' that are ugly and inappropriate, and decorating choices of colours that can be best left to the imagination. Not to mention the holly hedges, a stagnant stinking pond of unimaginable depths, and dire warnings from his friend that Nichols is about to step into a money pit that will sap his life and savings.Undeterred by such gloomy words, Nichols falls head over heels in love with his find, especially when he discovers the kitchen garden. Not only is it beautifully kept, but along one wall is a collection of exquisite lilies. Soon, he discovers why there is such order in the midst of such chaos. For along with the house and land comes Oldfield, an ancient gardener of superb talents. Smitten, Nichols signs for the house on the spot, and soon starts on that most dreaded adventure that most home owners endure -- renovations. With his 'valet,' Gaskin, and two cats, 'One' and 'Four' Nichols moves into Merry Hall, and starts the work with a great deal of gusto, and soon finds out that in his own little Eden, there's a few problems. For one, there are the neighbors, Miss Emily and Our Rose, forever scheming to get something out his prized gardens. And Oldfield, is quite another problem altogether. There are towering elm trees and their suckers, the dratted holly hedge (the solution to that one is not one that I would recommend!), and the question of what would you do if you could dream -- and dream big?I loved reading this book. I found myself entranced with Nichols writing about everyday life, the perils and delights of gardening, and living with cats. At times I was helplessly laughing at Nichols' searing wit and lofty views on post-War taste in Britain. He, quite frankly, doesn't give a hoot as to what people will think of him (save Oldfield, for very sensible reasons).Where this story shines, however, is not just in the language and Nichols' skills at writing. It's in his loving, vivid descriptions of flowers and plants, and I found my mouth watering, and desperate looks out at my own wilderness, wondering Could I do it too? The antics of his cats had me in nodding agreement, and plucking at my partner's sleeve and crying out, Listen to this --!Along with Nichols' wonderful prose, there are illustrations by William McLaren in black and white, along with several photographs of Beverley Nichols (including one with 'Four' in his arms). For this new edition, there is also a forward by Ann Lovejoy and an index of all of the plants by Roy C. Dicks. The book itself is a facsimile of the original edition published by Jonathan Cape in 1951. This new edition, only available in hardbound, is published by Timber Press books, and they can be reached at [...] for more reprints of Beverley Nichols books. In short, this is a book to delight any gardener, bibliophile or cat lover's soul. It's funny, at times sorrowful (I cried over 'Two' and 'Three's stories), and came away with a wistful hope that one day too, I would have a wee garden of my own. If you can't purchase this, do try to get your hands on this one at your local library. It is simply too good to miss.Five stars overall, recommended.

Where have you been all my life, Beverley Nichols?I stumbled upon this indescribably charming book in a quest for entertaining reading, having seen glowing mention of the gardening series in the Bas Bleu catalog for several years. When I found a used copy for small dollars on Amazon, I decided to give it a try. What a delight. How worth the full price of new volumes.I'm not a gardener, although I do enjoy other's gardens and I especially enjoy reading about gardens and gardeners. I've delighted in Gladys Tabor for years and thought I would never find anyone to surpass her. Nichols does the job.His prose is glowing. His descriptions of plants and people awaken the imagination with flights of fancy. I find myself cheering him on in his quest for objets d'art and flowering fauna and thrill with him as he watches them grow and his garden develop. What a shame a talent like this had to die! But we all do, and Ms Gladys Tabor did, as well. Surely heaven is blooming expansively because of these two. I only hope they met over tea, shared some of their gardening experiences and went on to enthrall the Heavenly Host as they develop their heavenly gardens.

The first volume of a trilogy about the author's time at Merry Hall, this book is more humorous garden writing than strict autobiography. We know (primarily from the dust jacket) that Beverley Nichols was a widely-travelled journalist and prolific author, but aside from the occasional mention that he needs to keep working (hard) to pay the (very high) bills, Nichols doesn't mention his life outside of Merry Hall or, more specifically, its garden. The book begins after WWII, when Mr. Nichols returns from "a job" in India to a ravaged London and develops an overwhelming urge to move to the country and get back to nature in the form of a hopefully large and preferably derelict garden that he can "rescue". After a daunting (and amusingly described) search he miraculously finds what he considers to be a dream property - a Georgian manor house on 5 acres of truly hideous landscaping. With wry wit Nichols tells the story of acquiring the property against the better judgement of friends, and of what is involved in making a run-down manor house habitable, and in dismantling, re-ordering and re-planting 5 acres of gardens. Along the way we meet Oldfield, the very talented but taciturn and somewhat difficult gardener; Gaskin, the long-standing and nearly superhuman manservant; Miss Emily and Our Rose, nosy and perpetually disapproving neighbors; and the beloved cats One and Four. Although avid gardeners will no doubt love this book as they mentally compare notes with the author, one need not have ever dirtied one's hands with compost to enjoy reading it. The narrative meanders like a leisurely stroll in the garden, and Mr. Nichols' faith in the therapeutic powers of gardening is reminiscent of that in The Secret Garden (Frances Hodgson Burnett). The author's fond and poetic descriptions of the various aspects of his garden, intermingled with his sharp social observations and dry British humor make this a thoroughly enjoyable read. I have already ordered the other two books in the trilogy. An additional note: this is a facsimile of the original 1951 edition; it contains lovely line drawings throughout, and is printed on the nicest paper I have encountered in a long time.

CHAPTER 1THE GAME IS CHANGINGCan your body keep up with what modern culture expects of it as the decades pass? The realization that I wasn't what I used to be came a couple years ago when I was in the Congo tromping through the jungle. I'm a photographer. Jane Goodall was there, and she's 77 and kicking the [crap] out of the entire crew. All these guys couldn't keep up with her. Throughout my career, I'd always been the strongest guy on my crew. I'd be in Dubai running up a sand dune leaving my younger assistants in the dust. But suddenly that was over for me. I'd lost that. I could feel myself failing. It was horrible. When I got my blood work back from Dr. Comite, my cortisol [stress hormone] levels surprised me. I know what it feels like to be stressed out, but I'd never seen being stressed out illustrated as a number before, chemically. My testosterone levels were low, of course, and whatever improvements I could make to my physical infrastructure through hormone treatment and exercise was my primary concern. I didn't just want to be better. I wanted to be optimal. I'm competing with the best in the world.I felt results right away. I had more energy, and now Dr. Comite tells me that I've essentially reversed the aging process in most of my measurable tests. Travel is still the biggest obstacle for me. I avoid the junk foods that are easily accessible, like in hotel minibars. Also, I've never had a steady, normal schedule. In my work, I have to keep a second suitcase packed at all times because I don't know when or where I'm going next. So I work very hard to eat right and stay on the program no matter where I am. I rededicated myself to the good things I had already been doing while including the newer ideas from Dr. Comite and her staff, such as adding intervals to my workouts. My God, has that helped me! I am now out on a shoot and not even feeling it.—VINCENT M., age 53, photographerThe baby boomers have forever changed what a 40-year-old looks like and what he can do with his body. The transformation began in the 1980s, when many people started exercising more and eating better. They also were starting their families later in life. All this got pushed up against the wall of the body's natural slowdown, and the health impact became obvious. It used to be you might live into your fifties, dying from the disorders of aging instead of surviving to deal with their complications. Today, you'll likely live into your eighties, so now the question becomes, How well will you live those added years? How will you sustain health beyond your peak? If life begins at 40, as the saying goes, then we need to make sure the body can keep up.Here's the problem: Countless men hitting their forties come into my office and tell me that everything seems like it's just grinding down--that their best years are over. If you're feeling that way, and facing four more decades of life, that has serious implications.Growing older in the current medical climate isn't pretty. It's full of knees that don't work, beer guts that persist even after you stop drinking, a disappearing sex drive, and a steadily weakening of body and mind until some debilitating disease takes you out. It doesn't seem fair or practical. Our quality of life is suffering, and our health care system is crashing because it wastes billions to manage chronic disorders year after year. We have extension of life but not extension of health. I don't want to see folks in the last one, two, three, or even four decades of life having few choices in how they live except to cater to the complications of avoidable diseases. You will likely live longer thanks to modern medicine, and you too can be like my dad and live to see your nineties. If you take action now, you can age in good health like my father fortunately did. He took the initiative to eat right and exercise. He monitored his health and challenged himself to improve in a way that people usually don't do on their own. My father was the first person to shape my ideas on Precision Medicine. Knowing yourself and taking ownership of your health will help you keep going strong physically, mentally, and socially. Doctors may not always ask the right questions, so it pays to be aware as Livingston Miller's story illustrates.I'm a trainer, so I eat right and I stay in shape. I've appeared in ads all over New York City for a gym, advertised as the picture of health. I was training Dr. Comite and talked to her about some of the problems I was having--getting dizzy periodically, feeling thirsty all the time, and fainting. I was drinking a lot of fluid and urinating so much that I cut back on water. When I had gone to another doctor, he thought I was dehydrated because of my intense physical activity. He wasn't alarmed by my elevated blood sugar either because I ate five meals a day. I even passed out a few times and was brought to the ER. There, they had no idea what was wrong with me, even with multiple tests, CAT scans, too. My symptoms persisted, and Dr. Comite was hearing my frustration. After another episode when I passed out just after snacking on a protein bar at the end of a long day of golf, I told Dr. Comite, and she got me evaluated right away. When the lab test results came back, I was in for the shock of my life. I was a diabetic. Then I underwent a VO2 assessment, and the findings caused her to suspect that I had had a silent heart attack sometime in the past. Next I underwent a nuclear stress test, which confirmed the muscle damage in the inferior portion of my heart. My cholesterol was 240. I got onto her program, lost 20 £ds, and turned the diabetes around completely with supplements and eating the right food at the right times. I got my cholesterol down and have been repairing the damage from the heart attack.—LIVINGSTON MILLER, age 59, personal trainerLivingston's symptoms were classic signs of diabetes. Before I brought him in for testing, I asked him, "Who in your family has diabetes?" His response: "Everyone." That didn't surprise me, and it indicated that I was on the right track. After I ran his blood work and saw his sugar metabolism numbers (see his hemoglobin A1c shown on page 237), my hunch was confirmed. If he had been asked about his family history earlier, the other doctor might not have glossed over his high blood sugar. If doctors had more time with patients, we could get to know them. By asking the right questions, we would be better able to identify such warning signs. That's why you have to know your family's health history and your own health data, a process I'll help guide you through in this book. With this knowledge, you'll be the one to optimize your own health and ensure the quality of your life at any age.Livingston has done a health 180. What did he change? He's getting adequate sleep; he's practicing stress reduction; he's training properly for his body--significantly cutting back on the resistance training, replacing it with more cardio. He's mostly eating the right food regularly throughout the day and is drinking less wine too; he's taking supplements and even some medications for balance. I have him on a statin for his cholesterol because I want to see it lower than the 180 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) he has been able to attain with lifestyle changes. I've also started him on testosterone, which has benefited his metabolism. For Livingston, it's game on. Now he has the chance to keep his edge for the rest of his life. If he stays on track, he will likely be in good health for decades to come, despite having hit a rocky patch in his late forties. But imagine if Livingston's disorders of aging--heart disease and diabetes-- had gone undetected. His future might have looked as it does for many seniors facing constant hospitalizations, with limited mobility and mental faculties. I don't want this to be the way anyone lives their last years. And it doesn't have to be.I've been a doctor for 36 years. I studied and taught medicine at Yale Medical School at Yale University, and I've been fortunate to work with some of the brightest minds in the medical world. I'm an endocrinologist, which means I look at communication throughout the body through the interaction of hormones and proteins, these agents in essence determining much of how we think and feel every day and over the course of our lives.Which 84-Year-Old Do You Want to Be?I've shrunk to about 100 £ds. I have diabetes and I'm in the hospital after breaking my second hip. I was home for only 3 weeks after the repair of my first hip fracture. My wife and son are by my bedside constantly, and I'm not able to eat much. I'm failing fast, and I feel I'm helpless. After being strong all my life, I never thought I could become so frail.—SAM, retired electricianI founded an investment banking firm over 40 years ago, and I never imagined that I would stop working. I wanted to be able to get into the office at least twice a week; still, even that was becoming impossible. It was pretty depressing to feel incapacitated. My available testosterone level was 14, and I was told that was less than you'd find in a boy, not even a teen. I started on testosterone and several supplements, including DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone), vitamin D, coenzyme Q10. Within a few weeks, I'm not only at the office every day, I'm in the gym every day too. I even wake up with erections. I hadn't seen that action for years! I feel stronger, with more energy. My whole attitude has changed.—GEORGE, investment bankerI've had the opportunity to study the human body in all its stages: in utero; early childhood; school-age years; the teenage years, when hormaonal surges trigger puberty; the twenties, when the body reaches its physiological and reproductive peak; the thirties, when hormone production begins to shift and dial back; the forties, when physiological and reproductive challenges usually become noticeable; the fifties, when health and disease consequences may develop, the product of unchecked disorders of aging; and the sixties, seventies, and so on.The usual model has been to try to repair the body's malfunctioning systems and parts with medicine, which commonly shuts down any remaining functionality, creating a lifelong dependency on pharmaceauticals. When you replace thyroid hormone, for example, the thyroid gland stops working, and you are likely to need alternative sources of thyroid hormones for the rest of your life. My passion has been to find a way to help the body regain balance naturally, when possible, to restart sluggish metabolic function while triggering optimal hormonal activity. Lifestyle factors like sleep, stress, sex, nutrition, and exercise all impact the body's operation.I've done clinical research at both Yale and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) that required thinking about how to help the body do a better job of taking care of itself when something isn't functioning well. My early focus was on pediatrics, specifically puberty that occurs too early, and later I helped develop Women's Health at Yale. My role, at that point, was to serve as a consultant; often many patients were interested in participating in my research trials on hormonal function once they met me. I wasn't a primary care doctor but the person a specialist conferred with when a patient was not making progress, a diagnosis was proving difficult to determine, or alternative management approaches were needed. A gynecologist might send her patient to me, for instance. I would assess the patient's health, make a diagnosis, then make recommendations, some of which may have derived from my research efforts. I acted as a tertiary consultant in many cases in that I conferred with specialists, but I didn't replace them or the primary physicians. In the 1980s, I began to hear many stories that sounded similar. Women would tell me that they didn't know what was happening to their bodies. They felt lethargic, anxious, and generally just not like themselves. Some of these women were medical researchers and writers who had access to the literature, and they still didn't really know what was wrong. They would tell me: "Nobody seems to be able to answer my questions. I was told it's all in my head." Diagnoses were anything but physical: often empty-nest syndrome, depression, or something similar. Many of these women were given prescriptions for diazepam (Valium) or chlordiazepoxide (Librium). They were told to adopt a puppy. They were told to get over it. These women, baby boomers who were starting to feel the effects of aging, considered these answers unacceptable and kept searching for different solutions. What became clear to me was that these women weren't being taken seriously and they weren't going to stay silent. They were not like their parents, who would rarely challenge their physician. Plus, they were part of the sandwich generation, raising a family yet also largely responsible for the care of their aging parents, who often were in poor health. They were concerned about following in the same path, adding burdens for their own children in the future. As an endocrinologist, I knew that their hormones were in transition, declining each year. The cascade was producing a physiological change that was fundamentally transforming their bodies and shaping their minds, attitudes, and energy. Then it clicked: This time in life--menopause, for women--was an unwinding of what had begun to wind up in puberty. This epiphany led me to start down the road of appreciating how we can optimize the body's function to prevent the downward slide that we had assumed was inevitable with age. We could do it by bolstering the body's ability to regain hormonal balance. And if this was true for women, it was probably true for men as well.Unexpectedly to me, the number one complaint I heard from women over 40 was actually not about their own health or the fact that they had put on a few £ds. It was about the failing health of their husband or male partner-- their man's lack of energy, his weakening of libido. What's more, women were not only complaining about their men, they were losing interest in their partners because of it. The failing health of their husbands was the number one reason many women cited for having affairs.

I have been trying to be more pro-active with my health and this book's central concept regarding pro-active monitoring of blood chemistry, via Precision Medicine, is the right book for me at the right time.I particularly enjoyed the first handful of chapters and will be using it as reference in the future. This book is pretty well balanced between basic wellness (sleep, eat right, exercise) and modern medicine, but it does have a pharmaceutical bias (statins are used). This is the balance I am working on and I appreciate this book's advice. It is not 5 stars since the accompanying web site is poor. The book mentions additional content online, but I can't find it unfortunately.

Excellent read with many facts that I will refer to many times going forward. Too bad there aren't more doctors that are knowledgeable with male aging. For that reason, the book is a bit of a self-help since there is no one there to guide you through the process of implementing Dr. Comite's recommendations.

Consider the impact of aging on men, the role of testosterone and other chemical imbalances in that aging process. There is a good chapter on supplements and their potential impact.

This book does more than just enlighten you with mounds of accurate, up-to-date reliable information. It gives hope to men on the cusp of despair - even to those already in the pit of such despair - about the health issues it addresses that are so critical to a man's longevity, sense of wellbeing and overall enjoyment of life. Just the hope it provides in laying out diverse treatment options can return much joie de vivre to those already overwhelmed by a bewildering onslaught of symptoms and noticeable decline. Thank you, Dr. Comite, for restoring hope to the despondent. Thanks for re-empowering the emasculated real treatment options. Am so glad I bought this book!

The book is full of information and data. I found it somewhat bias towards hormone therapy being a silver bullet, but I still learned more about how or body uses different food sources and some insights around appropriate supplements to use.

I enjoyed this book. Is well written and interesting. I believe the subject matter will be helpful to many men.

Loaded with expensive advice.

Chock full information as to what a man should expect when dealing with health issues. A guide to help understand certain conditions that any man may encounter and how to go about dealing or even solving them. I also felt the book could have been a little shorter with fewer details and accolades.

Joe Perry has always been the seemingly quieter side of the Toxic Twins. If you've read Steven Tyler's autobiography, this book will serve as a fitting companion. Everything from Perry's writing style to his interpretation of events highlights the sharp contrast between the two men, who retain a combustive, combative and yet brotherly relationship.Joe Perry's book - no doubt aided by bestselling biographer David Ritz - is enjoyable and readable. While intoxicated and drugged during the '70s, the overall calm and determined focus of Perry helps to convey the story of Aerosmith in a clear business like way. Tyler's biography was way more colourful, impulsive, stream-of-consciousness and anecdotal. Perry focuses on his personal decisions (shedding light where Tyler did not) in leaving the band; his ongoing frustrations and his inner life.Without saying, Perry really is the backbone of Aerosmith while Steven is the consummate frontman, and the two play out their roles in Perry's story. So while Tyler's voice shouts louder and is more sensory - Perry's tale is one of a geek who became a guitar god. It's fascinating to hear both men speak, even if one wonders how accurate events were. Whatever the case, Perry's love of music triumphs above the chaos. And for Aerosmith, one of the most remarkable rock and roll bands in history - the Train Keeps A Rollin'...

I'm an older fan of Aerosmith....specIfically everything through Draw the Line. I have no interest in the latter more pop stuff like Love in the elevator, etc etc....not a knock, just not the Aerosmith I prefer. Even Lightening Strikes is preferred over the resurrected pop-osmith. Also, importantly I'm a big fan of the team of Perry Whitford. It's not my life or my book, but my feeling is that Joe glossed over the fact that Dick Wagner actually recorded Train Kept Rollin for them....I expected a comprehensive life story to tell those honest facts....I also felt joe came across a little self centered in some ways regarding the importance of his songwriting....riffs, absolutely....great guitar mojo and on the edge brilliance, yep..songwriting? I think he required Tyler to make it Aerosmith level great....I also felt Whitford did not get due mention since he is actually the more accomplished player of the two. I did not like how it came across in the book as a marginalization of the rest of the band....again, I'm a large Joe Perry fan and I love his playing and tone...I'm just giving my perception on how it came across to me.All that said it is a good book and a good read....albeit through colored glasses and, in my opinion, an ego filter. Others may not see it this way and that's accepted.

I've read many books about Aerosmith. This is my favorite. Joe's writing style is warm and inviting. I found it hard to put this book down. It was like Joe was sitting with me in my living room telling me his story. I was left feeling like I knew Joe. Yes he is a Rock Superstar. Guitars and music are his passion. He makes no excuses and he doesn't have to. He adores his wife and family, loves nature and appreciates simple things. Who knew? Through the good and the bad --it's obvious that Joe has an appreciation for the lessons he has learned along the way. He candidly talks about the struggles between he and Steven, yet he leaves me believing that he truly loves the guy. The incorrigible yet adorable Steven Tyler will forever be his brother. (okay maybe Joe wouldn't call him adorable - that part is me talking) Joe admits that "lack of communication" on both of their parts was often to blame for many of their issues. He explains in more detail the issues with Tim Collins and owns his part in bringing him into the fold. Before I read this book, I thought of Joe as an awesome guitarist who seemed as sullen and mysterious as he was sexy and gorgeous. In my mind he is still all that, but so much more. Buy the book! It is a worthy read!!

Joe Perry writes an honest book. In the moments that I ran into the band backstage before Aerosmith concerts in early years and later during the JPP years, I would deem Mr. Perry's comments as valid. The book is written as an honest account. Not a "Hey world, look at me. I'm a big rock star with a big ego." As a former music promoter of national acts, I agree with Mr. Perry's take on the music business, as I heard other national artists comment about the underbelly slime of the music industry. What I found most remarkable, is how Mr. Perry maintained direction of himself, other bandmates, focus on achieving the high musicianship, with best success intent for Aerosmith, while battling girlfriend distractions, physical addictions, and dealing with opaque management firms. This is a great read for any upcoming musician or band as to the dedication it takes to realize success in the music business. Mr. Perry adhered to high standards. When a band member shirked practice, Mr. Perry quickly determined that person was a detriment to the band and needed replaced. What I found most delightful in reading Mr. Perry's book is that regardless of the hardships and derailments in his personal and musical biz life, Mr. Perry had a strong sense of integrity and morals as to conducting himself and in relation with his fans.

A perfect introduction to "distant reading".

Fairly good book highlighting the importamce of a new trend in the digital humanities. At this point several of the methods are beginning to be outdated.

The first half of the book gives a perfect, succinct, and accessible articulation of large-scale analysis. The second half offers some well-explained examples and case studies.

Everyone knows that computers are changing everything. You might not expect that they are changing the way that professors of English analyze literature. This is, however, happening, and is leading to unexpected insights. _Macroanalysis: Digital Methods and Literary History_ (University of Illinois Press) by Matthew L. Jockers is a sort of manifesto for the use of enormous databases to tell us about trends and meanings that could not be perceived before. Jockers says that the emerging field has come to be called "digital humanities" after being known as "humanities computing." Concordance work preceded the use of digital computers, but computers have brought powerful ways to seek answers. "The humanities computing/digital humanities revolution has now begun," writes Jockers, "and big data have been a major catalyst. The questions we may now ask were previously inconceivable, and to answer these questions requires a new methodology, a new way of thinking about our object of study."It certainly must be new for the English professors who have previously done their work without computers. "Like it or not," writes Jockers, "today's literary-historical scholar can no longer risk being _just_ a close reader: the sheer quantity of available data makes the traditional practice of close reading untenable as an exhaustive or definitive method of evidence gathering. Something important will inevitably be missed." One of the surprising findings described here is that little words make the great difference. A writer might have to decide, perhaps repeatedly, whether to describe a sunset as "beautiful" or as "magnificent." Such choices take conscious reflection, but they tell less than does the use of little, automatic words like "the," "of," and "it." These words, outside of our conscious control, are, says Jockers, like the "tell" exhibited by a poker player. It would be excruciating work to tally up such tiny, seemingly insignificant differences, but that's the sort of work a computer can do with ease, giving insight into authorship that is available no other way. A computer cannot understand a novel the way we do, but that does not stop it from being able to spot styles. Distinctions of word use in different styles are helping literary scholars define what genres are out there, and the foundations for classifying novels into them. Computers know nothing of plot or protagonists, but they have proven capable of defining genres by word use and they can make charts called dendrograms that look like family trees the evolutionists use, showing how one style descended from another.Jockers understands that there are limitations for this sort of evaluation of literature, and jokes about how "more controversial and objectionable would be an argument along the lines of `Moby Dick is God, and I have the numbers to prove it.'" I thought also of the great expression of the difference between understanding literature and enjoying it, in the description in _Catch-22_ of the character Clevinger: "He knew everything there was to know about literature, except how to enjoy it." Computers with their word counts, endlessly sorted and refined, might help our understanding; if this understanding helps our enjoyment, let them keep crunching.

Jocker's Macroanalysis is a wonderful read. As someone who dabbles in text mining and encourages a new generation of young scholars to consider the application of computing to a deep analysis of their texts of interest, i found myself nodding in agreement more and more as i continued through the book. While on occasion i wished i understood more of the details in each of the applied analyses, i quickly appreciated that Jocker's intent was much more of an encouragement to understand the potential of analyses in the large rather than YABOM (Yet Another Book On Methods). Part II of his book is must reading for anyone who wants to see concrete examples of how computational analysis seeks to answer new questions of large bodies of text.Perhaps most importantly from my perspective was how the book encouraged me to consider new avenues for text mining. Rarely do i get motivated when reading technical material. But motivated i was ... and am; i finished the last page with copious notes, tens of new experiments in mind, and a joy of working in this field not felt since first reading papers by John Burrows.

Jockers's Macroanalysis represents a major advance in digital humanities and literary studies. In elegant and enjoyable prose, Jockers demonstrates how a variety of cutting-edge computational techniques can bring us new insights about style, genre, and literary history, in a manner that is both precise and comprehensive. Jockers invites us into his workshop, but treats the technical aspects of his approaches with light touch. The result is a delightful book that will be required reading for anyone who wants to understand and practice digital literary scholarship.

Julie Richardson delivers updated, mouth-watering recipes for just about every occasion. There are many recipes on cakes, frosting, desserts, and much more. This ideal book is a gift for any cook, and home bakers would love it. Recipes are included for holidays, birthdays, family gatherings, and just about any social event. A great Gift for the sweet tooth in you, your friends, and family. Enjoyable, delightful, and useful for the cook. Highly Recommended!

Just want to add my five stars to all the others. I have made a number of the recipes from this book and they have been really good. This is probably not the right book for a first time tentative baker, but those with a little experience and and a sense of adventure will very much enjoy it. This book is about the flavor and quality of the product, not about how it looks. There are clear instructions on how to get complete every step of the cake baking process, and then how to assemble them. The decorating is left to your imagination (just look at all the beautiful customer photos to confirm), and that makes it even more fun. I have not baked every cake in the book yet, but every one I have has received multiple praises. My most recent was the double-dip caramel cake (don't have the name right). I only had two cake pans and cutting them in thirds proved to be a little steep for my skill set...let's just say there was no question the cake was homemade. However, I received a response from one experienced cake eater that it was one of the best cakes they had ever eaten. Anyway, I look forward to the challenge (and so does my family) of having to bake this cake a few more times to get my assembling technique ironed out. This is my new go to cake book and if you are actually interested enough that you are reading this review, then you should make it yours too. Thank you Julie Richardson for sharing these great recipes as the East Coaster may have never been able to experience your wonderful cakes otherwise. Lastly, anyone who thinks as highly of this book as I do should look at First Prize Pies (by Allison Kave) as a complementary pie baking book. Her pies are not necessarily vintage, but very creative, from scratch and fun and challenging in the same way these cakes are.

I’ve been delighted by this book - the layout, the writing, the recipes, the photos, everything! I’ve made a few of the recipes so far, and they’ve been terrific. The Italian Cream Cake was amazing (although I made a traditional cream cheese frosting for it), and the Tropicake recipe is the perfect pineapple coconut cake recipe that has eluded me for years. Actually, the Tropicakes I made as mini-bundts, and they were the best bundt cake I’ve made in a long time, despite all my bundt-specific cookbooks. Malted milk cupcakes too, yum! I bought a number of cake books around the same time and figured I’d make one recipe from each, rotate them for awhile, but now I think I’ll just stick with this one until I’ve made everything I want to try, since the few recipes I have tried have been so superior to others and the selection of recipes is so interesting. I realize that these are supposed to be traditional cakes, but most of them are new to me, not just updated versions of something I’ve had before. I should also mention that the book doesn’t have as many pictures as I would normally like (which some kind reviewer here prepared me for), but it’s so well written that I haven’t minded that at all. I don’t need the picture to convince me to read or try the recipe. I only have a few cookbooks of which that’s true. Anyway, I highly recommend this book, I cannot imagine someone not liking it!

This cookbook is by far the best cookbook I've purchased in ages! I actually originally checked it out from our local library, and decided to purchase it after exhausting my renewals and racking up a week's worth of overdue fines. Since purchasing this book I've made four different cakes for different events, and all of them have been a hit. I personally have enjoyed trying the various recipes calling for Bundt pans, and I really loved being able to make a from scratch version of the cherry chip cake my grandma baked my mom for her birthdays growing up. I've included a photo of that one. The only con that I can even come up with is that I've adapted her buttercream recipes with my own buttercream base, as I do not prefer buttercreams made with egg whites. However, that is completely unimportant, as the wealth of cake recipes and the stories provided with them more than make this book a worthwhile purchase. Everyone with an interest in baking should purchase this book.

I’m not sure what’s in this book? But mother actually shed tears when describing cakes she remembered, while thumbing through this book. As she was thanking me for this gift. So I’ve ordered another copy, for myself. I’ve got to see this. And I hope one day to transfer a true love of baking to my grands, as my grandmothers & mother did to me.

I purchased this as a gift for Mother's Day. My mom likes to bake and really enjoys making things from scratch. Given that she is a "Baby Boomer", I felt she would really enjoy the recipes in here. They sound delicious! They also look more intermediate, especially for beginners like me who prefer more simplistic recipes. There are several pictures in this book, just not one for every recipe. After seeing the older cookbooks my Mom has in her cabinet, it seems that is pretty standard anyway for early editions. The quality of this hardcover is brand new. I am pleased with this purchase and look forward to gifting it soon.

Store-bought cake mixes are now almost 4 ounces smaller -- remember when they used to be 18.25 ounces?? And all the shortcut cakes we used to make with the store bought mixes and other ingredients added? Well, those cakes aren't turning out the way they used to. Solution? Make your OWN cake mix, chocolate, white, and yellow, for those faster desserts you need quickly-- and then spend some quality time and start making cakes that we loved as children and grand hildren! The taste and texture is worth the extra time!!

Ex-SEAL and recovering alcoholic Ethan Renault has just settled in Sugar Falls, Idaho, when a former high school girlfriend shows up and claims it is his turn to be the parent for their eleven-year-old daughter, Trina. Until that second, Ethan had no idea that he was a father. Unknowing what to do, Ethan turns to Monica Alvarez, the librarian/waitress he has been trying to get a date with.Monica works two jobs and cares for Gran, who has Alzheimer’s. When Ethan proves himself to be clueless as to how to care for a preteen girl, she immediately steps in and takes them shopping. (Trina only has a small bag of clothes and one pair of holey sneakers.) But spending time with the handsome man and his preteen soon becomes her undoing.**** FOUR STARS! Even with so much going on in her own life, Monica is still willing to jump in and help Ethan out. This is the type of character that I like to read about. The character of Trina has had it rough up until now. The author manages to show that clearly in the first chapter. Trina takes a bit to come out of her shell, as anyone in her situation would. The author did a great job of showing how each character is flabbergasted at their new circumstances, yet they come together to work things out.Author Christy Jeffries has created the wonderful town of Sugar Falls, Idaho, and filled it with likeable characters. I am definitely going to look up other titles with Sugar Falls. If they are anything like this one then I am going to love them. ****Reviewed by Detra Fitch of Huntress Reviews.

The female main character got on my nerves. I usually read through a book without putting it down and I must say this one didn’t keep me interested.

I read this book in one sitting - I could not put it down; it was so emotionally gripping. Ethan came to settle in Sugar Falls after he left the SEALs because that's where one of his friends lived. He was looking for a place to put down roots after living on the move for most of his life. He was also dealing with the fallout from his last tour - guilt over a friend's death, and the alcoholism that he finally acknowledged. Now he works hard at his construction job, plays hard with his extreme sports hobbies, and fights hard against the craving for a drink. The last thing he expected was for a high school girlfriend to show up early one morning and drop off an 11-year-old girl she claims is his daughter.I could feel Ethan's shock, his anger at not having known before, and his utter panic at not knowing what to do. It was also easy to feel how nervous and overwhelmed Trina was. I liked how Ethan's protective instincts kicked in quickly. Their arrival at the café was quite a shock to Monica, but she handled it quite well. I loved how quickly she connected with Trina and was able to help Ethan deal with a crisis.Monica was attracted to Ethan from the time they met but has resisted giving in to it. She has some serious issues from her past, making her resistant to what she sees as "bad boys," and she was certain that Ethan fell into that category. She also had a lot going on in her life, as she lives with her grandmother. Gran suffered from Alzheimer's, and it had rapidly progressed, creating a great deal of stress for Monica.I enjoyed the development of the relationship between Ethan and Monica. Ethan was interested in Monica from the start, but couldn't get past her walls. It didn't help his cause very much that he was an outrageous flirt, which he used to hide when he was uncomfortable. I sometimes got frustrated with Monica, because she judged Ethan by the actions of those in the past who had hurt her, instead of looking at him as himself. Behind that flirtatious surface is a man with a big heart. I loved watching him do everything possible to make Trina part of his life, made easier with Monica's help. I enjoyed watching her tease Ethan a little about all he has to look forward to. Ethan was also there for Monica when there were problems with her grandmother, always ready to lend a helping hand. The more time they spent together, the more their attraction grew. Ethan wanted to see where it would go, but Monica can't let herself trust the feelings, committing only to a no-strings relationship. I ached for them both when things started getting more intense, and Monica panicked. Though some of what she said to Ethan was hurtful, it did give him a kick that he needed to move forward. Monica also had some surprises in store when she faced her own past. But it took advice to an eleven-year-old girl from a forgetful old woman to get Ethan and Monica talking again. I loved that scene, and the honesty of Ethan talking about being a work in progress. The epilogue was great, with Gran and Trina plotting again.I also loved both Trina and Gran. I loved seeing Trina bloom under Ethan's care. As she became more comfortable in her situation, it was great to see her personality develop. Her problems with school were realistic, and I liked how they were handled. Learning that she could depend on Ethan to be there for her was a huge thing for her. There were some terrific scenes of them together, and they learned about each other. I especially loved their acceptance of their differences. Gran was a riot. When she was with it, she had a pretty wicked sense of humor. I ached for her when she had her episodes, and also for Monica who just wanted to take care of her. It was fun to see Gran try her hand at matchmaking. I liked her bit during the epilogue as she talked about her life as it was now.

A heartfelt return to Sugar Falls! It's always a joy to return to this small-town filled with love and laughter, but this visit was particularly sweet. Ethan never even thinks about turning his back on the little girl he can see desperately needs him, and it just so happens that lady luck has shined down on him and made the woman he's already been interested in getting to know be the one that wins his daughters heart first. The characters are super easy to love and the story line won over my heart quickly. One of my favs in the series for sure!Former Navy SEAL Ethan Renault is trying to find his place. He's only been out of the service for a few months and has tentatively settled into Sugar Falls, Idaho ... although you couldn't prove it based on the unpacked boxes and scarce lived in look of his apartment. He's been busy filling his days with the things he needs to keep his mind at ease. Meetings with like minded folks, breakfast flirting with his favorite waitress at the diner, and just generally settling into a normal life for a change. The last thing he expects is for his old high school girlfriend to drop a half grown kid he had no idea he even had on his door step!Librarian and part-time waitress Monica Alvarez is doing her best to keep things afloat for her and her Gran as Gran's memory continues to deteriorate ... she has had her eye on the sexy soldier for awhile too, but the last thing she has time for is a man. That all changes when she meets his heartbroken little girl. How can she not step up and be a friend to those sad eyes? It turns out they are all good for each other and they wind up forming a quasi-family helping with the kiddo and with Gran as often as they can. The attraction that was already simmering eventually boils over and they have to decide if this family thing is going to be forever!

Bought this at a retailer store. I liked the way this author brought the characters Ethan and Monica together. The writing was excellent and I finished it in one setting. I hope in the author's next book we get to here more about them
