I don’t know how I missed this magical work when I was immersed in feminist sf many years ago. This is truly a classic and never hits a wrong one note. A planet of women with different climate, different ethnology, different foods and relationships. I found it mesmerising and could barely put it down. I loved it but won’t say more because of fear of disturbing the unfolding of the story.

I am a writer and former book editor, so I know good writing when I see it, and I see it here. Highly imaginative -- Nicola Griffith has created a vivid world in which to unfold this story of a woman's journey and self-discovery. My friend describes this book as belonging to the category of "anthropological sci fi." I would also describe it as an ever-deepening story of a woman's coming home to herself. I have been a Nicola Griffith fan since I discovered her novel Hild two years ago, and have wanted to read this ever since. I am so glad that I got around to it! Satisfied me in a deep way, like drinking from a narrative well -- both refreshes you, and imparts you with a deeper ineffable wisdom.

I just learned that word today. Gynocentric - adjective , entered on or concerned exclusively with women.I like gynocentric stories.I just woke up to Nicola Griffith last week. I saw a review for her new book Hild and that sounded right up my alley but I like to start at the beginning so I bought all of Ms Griffith's earlier books too. This first book is science fiction. The second book is science fiction/mainstream/lesbian. The third book is a scandinavian crime thriller. I haven't read the rest yet but Hild the new book is historical fiction. So this author does not like to pigeon holed.Anyways, Ammonite is approachable science fiction. You wouldn't have to be into women-centric books to like this but if you were into women-centric books you'll love this, whether you're a science fiction fan or not.Unlike Daughters Of A Coral Dawn, in Ammonite the planet of all women happens basically by accident. IMO, nothing in the book was anti-male.

After I read Nicola Griffith's "Hild", I simply had to read more of her books. This sci-fi story does an excellent job of painting a planet inhabited by space-traveling humans and one that only supports women, killing off all men with a virus. The "Company" is suitably anonymous and evil, and the main character, Marguerite Angelica Taishan is a strong and compelling heroine. The plot is well-defined, with overcoming hardships of all sorts, and the contrast of life in space stations with life on the planet "Jeep". The author keeps you absorbed and reading to the end. One can only hope there will be a sequel. Kudos to Nicola Griffith - an exciting author whose books I look forward to seeing more of.

Ursula LeGuin said in an interview once that she regretted having used the male pronoun in The Left Hand of Darkness because it did a disservice to women in science fiction. I pass no judgment, her work was a milestone in science fiction and gender issues.Griffith's Ammonite fills in that deficiency brilliantly. A planet of all women, none perfect, very few stereotypes. Some are kind, some are vicious. Written (much like LeGuin's works) from the perspective of an outsider that finds her own way in a society that is at first incomprehensible to her. There are perhaps a few cliches in the relationships that Marghe forms with the both the "real" natives and the "alien" women who have been there a few years, but these are cliches that actually work in a poetic manner.A fantastic read, somewhere between LeGuin's work and Margaret Atwood's.

Ammonite tells the story of Marghe, an anthropologist who goes on planet Jeep.Planet Jeep has a virus which kills all men and a significant percentage of the women as well.So the planet is a women-only society, both the Terran Company and the natives.I liked Marghe herself, the change she undergoes, and the trials she endures. I also liked the world building, which was very convincing. I didn't like most of the secondary characters, which were too shallow to be real, mainly the commander of the mirrors which was cardboard thick. I also thought the author used vocabulary out of a thesaurus (which is ok, as long as it doesnt feel like showoff, which it did). All in all - I enjoyed the book, it was a good read.

Griffith's novels are by definition mind-bending. They will make you think about things you had no idea you could even think about at all. She takes you to another world, literally. Ammonite is an amazing tale that gives queer women a story about themselves to read in an alternate universe that we might wish actually existed. This is a sci-fi novel must read that you won't be able to put down.

I must be one of the only readers of this award-winning book who hasn't loved it, judging by its many accolades. Griffiths is a great writer - that's undeniable - and I wanted to like this book more. However, I found the story slow going, and struggled to connect with the characters. I may well like Griffiths' other novels, judging by her style, but I wouldn't recommend this one.
