I am using this book as a "practice-first" guide to mathematics for the guy in his thirties, who struggles to understand why his high education was not done right 15 years ago, and do it so by himself this time.Accompanied by the lectures on the subject (search the title on youtube), this is likely the best book on math out there for motivated unexperienced reader.It will throw you to many practical fields of mathematics, and, having enough time, one can continue wandering and hunting for different subjects while eating this dish chapter by chapter (or lecture by lecture). For me, who has the luxury of not following any education plan, this is a delicious experience.

I agree with what another reviewer said:"if all math books are written in this clarity, the number of students in physics/engineering would rise considerably".This is the one of the clearest textbooks I ever seen in my college life.Clear words, helpful figures, many examples, ...This book is perfect for self-study.

Preface: I'm a physicist first and a mathematician second, so rigor is less my focus than ideas. That said, this is the best math textbook I've ever read. I decided to start reading it the day before my class started, but by the time I walked into the class I was already to chapter 4 - the book was that easy to read. (I jumped into a higher level class because I knew I would be done the book in a week anyway.) If there was ever a math textbook I would recommend to people from outside of math, this would be it.

An outstanding book. I'm an empirical biologist with just a bit of (long distant) math background. This has been excellent source for me to supplement a systems biology course I am developing. I cannot say enough about how much I appreciate the appeal to intuition and specific examples and not just a series of one equation derivation after another. Well worth it!

This book was the textbook in a course on nonlinear dynamics that I took. The course covered most of chapters 2-8 (chapter 1 is an introduction and is very short), so please consider my comments from that context. Speaking personally as an individual student- I tend to rely very heavily on my textbooks for learning and generally read them deeply. This book was no exception.Overwhelmingly, the great strength of this book is the quality of the writing style. This is a very rare math book in that it is actually fun to read. The examples are for the most part very good- easy to follow and understand. The author focuses a lot on the big picture perspective of the techniques involved and does a superb job of developing a very good intuition and feel for nonlinear systems. In fact, the prose is so readable, I would not have any hesitation recommending this book for someone wanting to teach them self the topic (assuming the necessary background of course). I feel that this book could easily accommodate such a student.Another great strength of this book is the way that ideas build upon one another. The author has masterfully written a book in which your intuition about early concepts pave the way for understanding later concepts even though missing some ideas in the beginning will not cripple you in later chapters. (IE, in many books if you do not understand chapter 1, you will fail in chapter 2, etc...)The problems are very doable, but yet seem to capture the essence of ideas in the chapters well. This is in contrast to many books in which the easy problems are practically busy work, and the problems that teach you something require you to saw off your left foot. The author strikes a nice balance here. Another nice feature is that the author draws actual models from a broad range of disciplines to build the practice problem sets and worked examples.The only real complaint I have about this book (as a pure math guy), is that this book is VERY skimpy on the theory(as in proofs and connection with deeper ideas)- but I think this book is targeted to a non-mathematics or an applied math audience. Personally, I found this frustrating and somewhat unsatisfying, but consider the nature of the class/audience. The author does sprinkle some theory around, such as the occasional reference to Topology and a section on index theory- but don't blink, you might miss it. The author rarely provides proof for theorems, those that he does provide are generally very simple and seem to be provided for their intuitive value rather than rigorous completeness. I considered giving it 4 stars instead of 5 due to the lack of rigor, but both considering its intended audience and its effectiveness at building intuition dismissed that consideration quickly. If you are looking for a book that digs into the theory, this is definitely not the book for you- at least not as a primary reference.Another minor shortcoming (not so much a short coming as quality which is lacking which could make this book better) is that the book provides practice problems for use on a computer(appropriately) but does not provide any example code at all. This is not a big deal, a quick google search could easily provide you with a basic demonstration of the syntax necessary to plot a system using the language of your choice, but still. Personally, I would not let such a thing be a deal breaker for this book. (At least the author has not taken the other extreme and written the book entirely around one particular proprietary language!)Despite these shortcomings, I strongly recommend this book either as a primary text for a course in nonlinear dynamics targeted to a non-pure-math audience, or as a secondary reference for anyone. I think this is a great book that will serve you well!Oh, if the author is reading this post-ADD MORE COLOR PICTURES OF CHAOTIC SYSTEMS PLEASE!! I love looking at those!

Women also were writing books to help one another live a full and good life. Jewish Publication Society has done a good service in bringing these out now.

This book is a treasure.

This is a beautifully written book with so much insight into the times that it was written. The prayers are about women for women.and are beautiful in their simplicity.If you are interested in history culture and times of Jewish women, and want a prayer book that although was written for the 16th century Jewish woman, This is an excellent book for our time as well. Devra Kay is knowledgeable and has done an excellent job of putting together this wonderful volume.My wife loves this book!

I thought the original tkhines in Yiddish would be in the book too, but it's only in English. Would be great if they had a website with links to the texts in Yiddish.

This is a phenomenal book, written by an extremely knowledgeable woman. Her command of history and language is outstanding! Each chapter has it's own footnotes. The translated prayers are incredible, an asset to every Jewish woman.

Despite a degree in Hebrew and Jewish Studies, I must confess I knew nothing about the "Seyder Tkhines" - mystical, passionate prayers written in Yiddish by women for women as long ago as the seventeenth century. Indeed, I was not aware that such a bounteous number of widely used prayers, for women only, ever existed in Jewish history.These (tragically) long-forgotten Tkhines are the subject of Devra Kay's fascinating book. I can't believe this section of Jewish social history has been so neglected - perhaps a reflection of the patriarchal nature of modern Judaism. It's interesting to note Kay's unearthing of these prayers coinciding with the new surge of interest in Jewish mysticism - Kaballah. I'm sure Madonna and Britney would find Kay's book as intriguing as I did!Through the "Seder Tkhines", Kay gives us new insights into a turbulent time in European Jewish History.Both erudite and accessible, Kay's book is a revelation. Just one request for Devra Kay - could we now have a collection of the original Tkhines, complete with tranlations, in time for my wife's Chanukah present this year?!

This book contains much information and many colored pictures. Obviously, the author is very knowledgeable in the subject matter. I like to browse through it pages and read the text, and I learn new things every time I do that. My only criticism (and that is why I gave it only 3 starts) is its organization. The traditional way books on Oriental rugs and carpets are organized is according to region of origin. The author of this book tried something new – categorizing by design. This decision is very unfortunate as it makes the book practically useless as an aid for establishing the origin of a rug in any systematic way. Very few rug weavers from one village will produce a rug that is identical to a rug produced in a neighboring village. Furthermore, they are unlikely to produce a rug identical to one woven by another weaver in the same village. Having said that, there is something in common for all rugs coming from the same area. It is very difficult to define the "Shirazness" of a Shiraz or the "Tabrizness" of a Tabriz or the “Kazakness” of a Kazak, but the experienced rug dealer or collector will be able to identify the region of origin immediately when seeing a rug; if not precisely then at least the general area. One often hears a collector looking at a rug for the first time saying something like “this feels like a Sarouk” before examining it more closely. This “feeling” is a result of seeing many “Sarouks” and developing the sense of what “Saroukness” feels like. So even though the new “Sarouk” is not identical to any of the “Sarouk” one had seen before, that feeling will direct her to take this as the starting point. The closer examination of the knot, the colors and design, whether it is a single or double weft weave etc. is just for more exact identification and confirmation of the first impression upon seeing the rug. I see this the same way as identifying a piece of music. It is impossible to define what ingredients makes a piece sound like Bach but the music lover would be able to tell upon hearing a single phrase that it is likely a Bach. Listening more carefully would enable one to hone in on the identity of the piece.Oriental rugs from all parts of the Middle East, Central and Western Asia and the Caucasus, all use very much the same design elements, colors and materials. One can find medallions, geometric or floral patterns in every genre. It is how these elements are combined together that gives a rug its unique identity. Perhaps the only exceptions to this are certain types of old Tekkeh Bukharas that use a very typical and unmistaken design. Thus, choosing to organize the book according to design doomed this book for failure in achieving its stated objective of being "a handbook on rug identification, a practical to the six hundred or so basic design styles..." (First line in the Introduction chapter).The first chapter of the book is entitled The Boteh and it covers rugs that have the Boteh motif in their design. The Boteh motif is very common and can be found in practically every rug making region. So this chapter discusses rugs from the Caucasus, Heriz, Serabend, Hamadan, India, and more; practically from every region. These rugs have nothing in common other than using this one motif in their design. Also, because of sorting by design the reverse is true: Rugs from the same area are discussed in multiple places. For example, Senneh rugs are discussed in The Boteh, Universal Design, Geometric Design, and Floral Medallion-Plain Designs chapters. This is the case with almost every major regional category. The reader interested in reading about rugs of a particular region must jump between multiple chapters and the index to piece together all the information provided about such rugs. Another problem is that it is often very difficult to decide where one should start looking for information leading to the identification of a particular rug. Many rugs will have multiple characteristics that could place them in multiple categories. If my rug has two octagonal medallions and a surface filled with floral patterns with Botehs in the four corners where should I start my search for its identity? Would I find it in the chapter on geometric designs, or Medallion Designs? Perhaps I should start with Floral, or maybe with Floral Medallion-Plain or Boteh?Having said all this, I would compliment the author for the huge amount of very detailed information and the many beautiful colored pictures compiled in this volume. If he has any intention to publish a revised edition I would highly recommend that he re-organizes the book according to the area of origin. Although there are many books on the market that do that, most fall short by not making the categories sufficiently fine. All books that I am aware of divide the region into the following regions: Anatolia or Turkey, Persia, Turkoman/Afghanistan, The Caucasus, and China. Some books bring examples of Syrian and Egyptian carpet, but these have only historical and academic interests as these areas have not been major rug producing centers for a number of centuries. The above areas are vast and consist of many regions that have been producing very different types of rugs that are rarely discussed in a systematic way. Mr. Ford’s book contains much valuable information about regional differences and sameness, sometimes to the point of discussing the commonality if difference between rugs produced by neighboring villages in the same region. Unfortunately, this information is lost due to his unfortunate choice of organizing the book by design.

First of all, this book is gorgeous. It would be worth having just for the photos alone. This book is intended to help you identify "oriental" carpets from their motifs and features. The author considers the original heartlands of the oriental carpet to be Turkey, Persia, the Caucasus, Turkoman Russia, Afghanistan, and Sinkiang. Sometimes books on this subject are organized by region (Shiraz, Heriz, etc.) This book is organized by design characteristics, such as vase, geometric, floral, etc. This makes identifying a specific rug much easier! Highly recommend.

If you have to get just one book about carpets, this is the one. I own many books on the subject, but none can compare for the depth of information and the quality of the images. Ford just knows more, and organizes the text and images better, than anyone else.

I love Oriental rugs and wanted to learn more about the design and history. This book seems very well-researched and features lots of illustrations, which is helpful. I wanted a book that could also serve as a reference guide to look up styles, regions and terms to help me identify them. Unfortunately, using it this way is very difficult, I'm finding. For a novice, this book may be too advanced and the indexing could be better. Overall, it's a good book that "dives deep" into this ancient art form.

This is an important book for those wishing to understand more about the design elements of Central Asian carpets. The text is excellent, the only criticism I have is that the images are often of relatively low quality. I think this is because it is a reprint of an older book.

After making a few carpet purchases, we used the book to identify them. Great photos and close-ups of the patterns. This book is useful to all levels of collector, and just interesting to flip through to learn about rugs. Only drawback is that it is not available as an ebook.

Made the mistake of attempting to use this as a primary resource to review class material. This requires a solid basic understanding of neuro to use. The questions were great review for class materials before exams. I anticipate this will be useful for USMLE Step 1 review, just not as useful DURING a first pass at neuroanatomy.

I neglected this book during my neuroscience class in favor of another title, but I just realized how much better this book is. The new edition is lightyears ahead of the prior and has a boat load of questions. Of the other "review" style books, this is my favorite for explanations and great illustrations.

Recommended.

Pages are very dense compared to other BRS books. Neuro is a dense subject, but this format did not work for me when trying to learn the material with no background. My least favorite out of the series. FA and lectures got be through neuro in med school.

Was hesitant to spend a bit more for the latest book.But when I compare it to the other edn I have, it's clear there's been an update to this BRS.Great book.Got it on time.Got it NEW.10/10!Happy Holidays!

I read the Chosen series and thought I had found a new favorite author. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed in this series. The plot in the first four books had a lot of action and interesting twists which I did enjoy. However, the raw sex on almost every page was a distraction and I found too blatant, including The humor which was mostly sexually oriented. Humans were regularly ridiculed, abused and raped by the males in this nonhuman culture and that activity was treated lightly in the story. I was disappointed in the male hero who was pretty much led around by his small head after meeting the female lead. She also became more and more in charge as the story progressed and did an awful lot of yelling. Would have preferred to see a strong partnerships, instead of having the strong male abdicate to the tiny female. Most of the other males were a little too focused on their sex lives to be taken seriously. It appears to me that the author built this story around a race of people whose sexual activity was depraved by most standards in order to fill the story with as must sex as possible. Probably should have a disclaimer in this book to let readers know in advance that this book is X rated.

Wow....just wow. I was NOT expecting this series to turn out to be what it was.I was expecting some boring story about some teenager and her boring life.Boy, was I ever WRONG.You have a human, who lost her family at a very young age, was the only survivor of a 5 car pile up, AND she can see "people" in the shadows that nobody else can see.All of it was Fate, and Fate had something special in store for her.Sasha, a normal human, one would think, turns out to have a very rare special power, a power that a "super human" community wants, both the good and evil.She chooses the good side, not by choice, but by Fate, because her one and only true mate is on the good side.Ever since being discovered (well, she discovered them), she's being hunted by evil forces, who want to use her to take over the "super human" community.She has to battle for her mate, and she has to battle for her rights and power within that community.All in all it's a really good series. It took me a few days, but I finally finished the 8th book today.If you're hesitating to start reading this series, stop and just read it. You won't regret it.

She keeps her secrets to herself, tucks them safely away in her secret box, a little place she has reserved in her brain that only she can access.He’s there, she knows it in her bones; she can feel him but she only see’s his shadow. She is drawn to him but why, she doesn’t understand, there’s so much in her weird life that she doesn’t understand. She sees him one day on the street, but no one else does, why can she see him, he’s beautiful, solid muscle, why is this happening to her? One minute he’s there the next he’s gone. Her boyfriend Jared can’t see him, can’t see the shadows, and can’t see the glow of eyes in the darkness. After Jared freaks out one night they have a car accident in the bad part of town. They have to walk to call a tow truck, but they are scared out of their wits. They find themselves faced with thugs in the night their intentions clear on their face then suddenly he’s there, her shadow in the night. He saves the night and takes her and Jared to his mansion. And now the fun begins.Stefan, the Boss is the leader of his clan, this is his territory and he rules with his magic and braun. After finding the young women in the street, he’s drawn to her by something mysterious. She’s different from other humans, she’s special in a magical sort of way and he can’t shake the pull that he has toward her. His race of people, vampire, tends to stay away from humans, they are a silly reckless lot of a race. But this girl, he has to learn her secrets. When she openly finds herself faced with a demon she unleashes her magic, powerful magic, and the likes of which Stefan has never ever seen a human do. He has to figure her out, but he also has to keep a safe distance from her, the alluring pull of her body, he doesn’t understand it, but he will find out and he’ll be done with her, maybe.This book is a powerhouse of demons, magic, mages, vampires and shape shifters. And it has to be one of the best that I’ve read in a long time. It’s jammed packed with action, magic style and you better believe that you won’t want to put it down. The series consists of four books and I knocked it out in two days. It kept me on the end of the couch, I literally couldn’t stop reading. You have your bad demons and monsters you know bad magic. But the good guys, the good magic is constantly in a battle fighting over supremacy in the territory.This author’s style of telling this story was one of the best all around. She has colorful characters, lots of humor especially with the banter between Charles and Sasha. Then you have Jason, Charles and Tim, you will fall in love. There were parts of the story that I just really laughed out loud. The characters will draw you in to where you can actually visualize what they’re doing, the expressions on their faces. I loved it! There is so much story to tell the author really moves with this book. There is no lag in my opinion, there are numerous fight scenes between the bad and the good, and the sexual innuendo is funny at times but the real get down to it with Sasha and Stefan are just mind blowing. So sensual it’s heartwarming. There are no raunchy words, just clean clear mind blowing scenes. Now there are some way out there sex going on but if you’re a vampire reader at all you will not be surprised as to their nature where the body is concerned.The editing on this book was excellent, no problems that I saw at all and this was a breath of fresh air for me. I could actually read this one without having to stop and try to figure out what the author was trying to say. It was very inspiring. K.F. Breene is a top notch story teller, you can tell she becomes immersed in her characters lives and tells their story with her heart. Again, this is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time and I will definitely read more of Breanne’s work. I liked this story so well that this author is now on my favorite list of authors.This is a must read for those of you that like the world of magic, vamps and shape shifters. It’s packed full of the unknown, the things that go bump in the night.

I'm very glad that I purchased this box set at a sale price. I'm not sure each of the stories/books would have been worth what books 5, 6, and 7 are priced (2.99).I found the first book as a freebie...I read it, had to shake my head, and chuckle a few times. It's not my usual genre of reading - I'm not even sure what you'd call it. Erotic paranormal urban comedy?Anyways, some of the conversations that occur between Charles and Sasha are beyond crazy stupid. Some are fun, but for the most part, I actually got tired of their bantering. I wanted to slap both of them more times than not.Would I recommend this series? Probably not. Even though I am curious as to how it's going to end, I'm not sure many people that I know would absolutely love to read this. I'm sure many do and will. But this is not a series that I'm ever going to go on and on about.
