I had to use this textbook for my last 2 years of Music Theory class (Theory III and Theory IV). It's definitely a good text as it covers everything I needed to know and had great examples. But it could often be confusing! It seems as if it was written from the perspective of "I'm an expert on Music Theory, look what I know!" instead of a "I'm brand new to all this, please explain it as simply and concisely as possible." perspective. It will definitely teach you what you need to know, but it doesn't have the most clear, easy-to-understand explanations. Thankfully my teacher was great at simplifying the subject enough for our class to grasp the concepts.So overall, if you have to use this book, you won't be disappointed in what it offers, but if you need the theory presented explained in the simplest, most easy-to-understand way possible, then there are definitely other books and websites that'll help you a lot more.

God, I hope this textbook gets better. I'm on chapter six and am self-studying just for fun and it really obfuscates the topic. When the author(s) go out of their way to muddle an explanation you have to wonder what was their purpose.

I've been a proffesional musician for 35 years and discovered Kosta's "Tonal Harmony" during a 13 year period in which I taught music theory in Westborough, Massachusetts. As with all textbooks, this is a supplement to teaching and should NEVER replace the teacher and student dynamic. That said, this is the best music theory text in existence. It uses simple, clear language to explain the concepts of notating organized sound and it does so brilliantly. The fundamental core of tonal understanding can be best understood through the redundancy of four part writing and Kosta makes it very clear on the do's and don'ts. One critic felt that two part writing would be easier, but to come down to guide tone lines (the chromatic 3rds and 7ths) requires a complete knowledge of four part writing, which couldn't be better explained than here. I chose my own listening examples and never used the accompanying recordings. Knowing what to use in a text book is part of being a good teacher. Using this book, every student I had who took the AP Theory exam got a 5. At least 50% of my many students took the exam and I never taught to the test. At the halfway point Kosta introduces the dominant 7 chord which by itself can (and should) take a full semester as the pivotal understanding of Western Harmony is about secondary dominants. Studying atonalism and row tones are here too, and beautifully explained for the advanced student but the first five chapters will create very competent composers. The book opens with rhythm which can be daunting. Touching upon it and returning often will keep momentum. The best way to teach rhythm is with a pair of drumsticks and hemiola best displayed with the work of Stephen Sondheim. Composing and music theory is craft-not art and "Tonal Harmony" is the finest, comprehensive book on music theory in print.it's wonderful in class; just as great for self study. The accompaning workbook is handy but hardly necessary.

This book is roughly 40 times the cost any ebook should be, and it's covered with DRM. I'm legally blind, and this DRM means I can't use my normal screen readers on it and can't convert it to a PDF or other format that's easier for me to use. The publisher is more concerned with protecting its rights than providing a quality experience.

This book is a few editions back, but it really doesn't matter that much (it's not like music theory as changed that much in the past few years, got it cos I could also get workbook with two CDs to match that were relevant), why I bought it--to save $. Perfect for me as a private music teacher to prep more advanced theory lessons, WAY easier to deal with than what I had in grad school, the practically unreadable HARMONY by Walter Piston.

Background:I bought this book because some one suggested it to me as I was entering college (I'm a music major). This isn't the text used in my school-I got it as supplemental/a possible better source. At the moment I couldn't play piano (still not much of a piano player but I get the stuff).The Not so Good Stuff:This book is really technical & nit picky about terminology. You'll have an amazing nomenclature if you can get through this-really but I think some functional aspects are missing. In other words, the book does a great job at helping you to identify, label & categorize things but it doesn't do much for providing a way to develop a working functional understanding of the stuff, then again that's what the workbook is for. And finally, to be frank-this isn't an easy book Dx.Good Stuff:This book is meant to cover four semesters of theory. It covers A LOT of ground & as a single source for it all it's a price friendly text. Going through this book will definitely set you up for just about any kind of theoretical situation-assuming of course you work with the information & internalize it.

I paid $119 dollars for a new version of this book because the description saidit was new and also included the CD—which I why I specifically paid all that money for the new book. There is no CD, and there is also a half-torn sticker on the side that says “used.”

This text is a must-have for every music major. It's definitely my theory BIBLE, but my only beef about the workbook was that there was no way to check my answers to see if I was doing things correctly...

The good: A wonderfully detailed translation of the Analects, with a fair amount of never-before-seen insights.The bad: (1) this is a scholarly translation and is not for the casual reader (2) There isn't consistent inclusion of the original Chinese beside the translations and analyses, which I personally think would have greatly enhanced this book's value.

This new translation of Analects provides us with a fresh view on Confucius' Way as it was, at least the authors claim so. It is correctly pointed out in the book that the task of reconstructing the "original" Confucius is inevitably interwined with our ever-changing understanding of the pre-Chin Chinese intellectual history. The task is never going to be easy, and is highly influenced by subjective preferences of individual researchers. The authors provide an updated theory of how the Analects was written in the course of several hundred years. One thing I like most is that convincing evidences are given to show that filial piety was NOT central in Confucius' morality. However, there are some other shaky arguments. For example, their effort of establishing this guy or that guy as the leader of the early Confucian disciples is too imaginative.

An excellent resource for the scholar. Rearranges the passages into a reconstructed chronological order, but retains their numbering, so the reader isn't lost. Exhaustive notes, plus the most penetrating discussion of the exact meaning of _ren_ (though they spell it "_rvn_") available in any translation. Language a teensy bit stilted in places. "Common alphabetic" (modified Yale) romanization.

Very good book if you're interested in a soldier's perspective of war, and are interested in the emotional and mental effects vs. explosions and action. The author is correct - our soldiers are vastly unprepared for the damage war can do to their psyches. After getting the audiobook for a road trip, I got this for my wife, who teaches yoga and is interested in techniques and solutions for trauma survivors - she was initially "WTF??" and ended up very impressed (and she's a smarty-pants PhD). By the way, the audio version is excellent.

As a fellow Vietnam Vet I found a lot of truth in what he wrote. Brutally realistic and honest. It was uncomfortably easy to go back there with him in the book. Not sure I would have the same reaction if I were reading it just as a novel. I felt flashes of anger and sadness as I read the book because I was really reading about myself in many of the passages. Not sure why I rated it 4 instead of 5 - probably more due to too many negative memories about anything associated with Vietnam than anything to do with the book itself.

Should be required reading for every soldier, sailor, airman, or marine before they sign on the dotted line to join the military. Also, EVERY politician should sign an affidavit attesting that s/he read this attentively and understands the lessons (and responsibilities) outlined here. Come to think of it, if you are planning to utter the words "thank you for your service" you must first read this book, AND the author's novel "Matterhorn" so that you understand what service really, really means before you say those words. Thank you Karl Marlantes. Thank you very, very much.

This book was written by a Marine Lt who volunteered for combat duty in the Vietnam war. He, like so many combat veterans before and after him, came home with unknown mental problems that affected both himself in his career, and his wife and children. I can relate to his story because I was a child of a WWII combat veteran that had what we now know is PTSS. It affected me and all my siblings and our mother. It was a terrible childhood for all of us, and we are still dealing with the after affects of the unholy way in which we were raised. We still tip toe around for fear of raising the ire of our father and releasing the beast within him, even though he is long dead. War truly is bad for children and all other living things, more than just the soldier is affected. the families, and society in general pays a great cost of the mental wounds these poor men bring home from the wars with them. The author gives spiritual insight into controling these demons before going into war, and gives suggestions on how our military can give these men and women tools to deal with unresolved anger and pain and nightmares. If you are a child of war, or are considering joining the military, please, please, read this book and try to follow some of the spiritual guidelines offered so you can deal with what has happened to you already, or is going to happen to you when you have to do the most unspeakable thing we ask of our children, taking the life of another human. Even if you are not affected by war in any way, (that's just what YOU think, I assure you, we are all affected by our countries wars) you should read this book and see what a marine volunteer has to say about the cavalier way in which our "leaders" are so non chalant about committing our children to war. In his opinion, nothing short of the loss of our freedoms is reason enough to go to war. Oil, land, etc, to enrich the already fabulously wealthy is an unjustifiable reason to kill even one of our children. Whether you are a Hawk, or a Dove, if you are a person of morals, you will find this book a breath of fresh air, telling us the truth about war. It offers suggestions on our now popular mantra, "To bring Democracy to the world". Not every country is ready, or even deserving of the lives of our children to attempt to bring them Democracy. It tells us to demand of our "leaders" the knowledge of whether the war will require just a short time in combat and then all boots out, or whether it will require the committment of thousands of soldiers for decades to change the thinking of people whose minds are three or four centuries behind the rest of the civilized world. Please DEMAND your child read this book before he/she joins the military! There are other, better ways to serve mankind than to kill people and destroy countries for our "leaders" to then give contracts to their buddies to make trillions of dollars on rebuilding what we have just destroyed. We all need to open our eyes. War is NOT glamorous.

Any veteran or first responder Can benefit from this book. It’s a very candid and Honest look at facing darkness and what ways we could prepare our military and first responders better. This guy is intelligent and has the real world experience - rare. He isn’t some academic goober armchair quarterback. Wish I’d have found this book earlier. It’s a great compliment to Dr Ed Ticks books War and the Soul and Warriors Return, Steven Pressfields Warrior Ethos, Sebestian Junger Tribe, and is good at relating the basics of depth/analytical psych to the life of a warrior which is needed more than our current VA and general society’s emphasis on CBT and heavy medications. Why aren’t we preparing or helping heal our warriors and first responders with more holistic methods? This book is a great start to think about that question.

This is a beautiful book. Thoughtful, personal, well researched, and superbly written. If you haven't read Matterhorn yet, read that book first, wonder for an hour or two about how much of that story actually happened, or could have happened, then read What It Is Like to Go to War. It could be the novel's companion guide, since virtually every scene that the author describes in Matterhorn is based on his personal experience in Vietnam. At the risk of slighting the author's creative ability (which is considerable) I have to believe after reading this book that Matterhorn pretty much wrote itself.I found that the books title, What It Is Like To Go To War, is somewhat misleading. It is much more than a first person description of leading a charge in combat, or watching your fellow soldiers get wounded and killed. That's all in there, but it is mixed in with an examination of the whole psychology of being a soldier, before, during and after combat. It discusses leadership, motivation, politics and personalities. It is about what it takes to be a modern warrior, the scars fighting leaves behind, and what it takes to return to normal after combat is over. The insight and scholarship in this work are first rate. You will come away having learned something about human nature under the most extreme conditions, and acquire a new respect for our fighting men (at least most of our fighting men). It should be required reading for all US officers.

Elsie Campbell has written a devilishly clever book that will appeal to quilters who love finding simple ways to make blocks and quilts that look hard to make. I bought this book for the pattern that is on the cover and was not disappointed. She has discovered a way to make triangular blocks that are more foolproof and certainly much faster than those constructed with the usual methods we are presented with. In addition to the cover quilt there are two other patterns in the book that I definitely want to make (I usually consider myself lucky if I find one pattern, let alone three, in a book that I genuinely like). Bravo, and highly recommended.

Elsie Campbell is easy to understand and has lots of good tips. The patterns provided are beautiful and doable for beginner quilters. A great buy!

I will be taking a class with Elsie Campbell, and wanted to understand her approach better beforehand. This book has clear instructions, beautiful photos, and opportunities for inspiration and personalization. I plan on following several patterns in this book to make some heirloom quilts!

Having been touched with family members suffering with depression and suicidal issues, I was actually afraid to open this book, but Kevin tells his story in such an honest and non dramatic way, it is therapeutic to read about what someone else's struggle is like. I think it can be really helpful for mental health workers who have not experienced this and need to see what it is rally like to experience mental health issues and psychiatric care and the problems with access to medication. If you have a chance to learn more about Kevin, I encourage you to, he is incredibly inspiring.

Ever since I saw Kevin Hines on the 2006 documentary film, "The Bridge," I knew his story was unique. In his book, Kevin shares his life events before, during, and after his suicide attempt at the Golden Gate Bridge. He also gives the reader an insight into his mind as he struggles with bipolar disorder. As soon as I received "Cracked, Not Broken: Surviving and Thriving After a Suicide Attempt" in the mail, I could not stop reading as I kept turning the pages day and night. Not once did I get bored with this book as Kevin has a way with words, especially when describing his own mentality. I must give him praise for sharing his personal life with brutal honesty. Each chapter tells its own story. Even after jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge and surviving such an attempt, he does not live "happily ever after": Kevin admits that each and every day is a challenge to live life to the fullest as there is no "cure" for bi polar disorder or any other mental illness. In this beautifully-written memoir, Kevin Hines does not hold anything back. Kevin reminds everyone that life is truly a gift that should not be taken for granted. Suicide has never, is never, and will never be the solution to any problem. He also gives advice on how to reach out to others if anyone is going through a difficult time with a mental illness. There is help. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever felt alone in this world due to life's struggles. In reality, no one is alone: Kevin shows that he cares about others who can relate to him by giving hope through his words or encouragement. I hope Kevin Hines will write more books in the future on living mentally well as he has a powerful voice.

About the Author

Tim Kiska covered the television industry for The Detroit News between 1990 and 2002. A native Detroiter, he worked at the Detroit Free Press between 1970 and 1987, where he covered courts, the automotive industry and held various other reporting assignments. He joined The Detroit News in 1987. Kiska completed work on a Ph.d in history at Wayne State University in 2003 and currently teaches journalism at the University of Michigan-Dearborn and producer at WWJ News Radio 950.

Fun little stories and "where are they now" snippets of the TV personalities of Detroit from the 40s through the 80s.I grew up watching Detroit TV from the 60s through the late 70s, and it was great to hear about the old faves from back then. Most stories I knew of, but each entry gave me a little more info, too.My favorite was the "The Ghoul" from the late 70s, and the one I was really surprised didn't have an entry of his own was "Ollie Fretter" the appliance store guy. Did he really ever give away 5 pounds of coffee, I always wondered.It's a nice, quick nostalgic ride through that part of Detroit history.

Wow - What a great book! I bought it as a gift but will have to get a copy for my personal library. It was wonderful to read about the television personalities from my youth along with the other Detroit notables that this book covers. It even had the words to some of the commercial jingles that we used to sing along with. Having moved away from Detroit several years ago, I had often wondered what happened to a lot of the people I grew up watching on TV and this book answered those questions. If you were a Detroit kid in the 50's or 60's, I highly recommend that you get a copy of this book and take a stroll back to your childhood.

Kinda of misleading, There wasn't really much on Soupy Sales in the book. I can't ever recall what I did with the book after reading it

I purchased this book for my brother's 60th birthday- having grown up in Detroit- thought it would be a great walk down memory lane. He called me when he received the gift and absolutely gushed- loved every entry. Now, i may have to buy a copy for ME. thanks

The story of Detroit and Windsor TV from the 50's on

Of all the books dealing with the subject of local TV, FROM SOUPY TO NUTS!: A HISTORY OF DETROIT TELEVISION is my favorite. Naturally, the fact that I grew up in Detroit makes me the perfect audience for this volume.This book brought back a flood of wonderful memories. So many names, so many programs. Kid-show hosts (Soupy Sales, Johnny Ginger, Jerry Booth, etc.), horror-movie hosts (Sir Graves Ghastly, The Ghoul, Morgus the Magnificent, Count Scary), newscasters and reporters, sportscasters, weathercasters, etc. -- they're all here, and plenty of others, including some unsung behind-the-scenes personnel.I had tears in my eyes reading the chapter devoted to the pro wrestlers who were my childhood heroes: Dick the Bruiser, The Sheik, Fritz Von Erich, Johnny Valentine, Bobo Brazil, and others. In later years, I got to know some of these guys, and they were friendly and cordial -- not at all like their violent, rough-and-tumble public images.I give this book my highest recommendation.
