Wish I'd come across this when It came out as there still would have perhaps been a way to influence my brother to find a strategy for staying here on Earth, despite the challenges.Kevin doesn't glorify the event in unrealistic terms. He delves into what it took for him to stay as well as possible following his recovery from this lowest point in his life.He continues to share his story and works like a champion to help others find a way to step back from that ledge. Having been touched with family members suffering with depression and suicidal issues, I was actually afraid to open this book, but Kevin tells his story in such an honest and non dramatic way, it is therapeutic to read about what someone else's struggle is like. I think it can be really helpful for mental health workers who have not experienced this and need to see what it is rally like to experience mental health issues and psychiatric care and the problems with access to medication. If you have a chance to learn more about Kevin, I encourage you to, he is incredibly inspiring.

Ever since I saw Kevin Hines on the 2006 documentary film, "The Bridge," I knew his story was unique. In his book, Kevin shares his life events before, during, and after his suicide attempt at the Golden Gate Bridge. He also gives the reader an insight into his mind as he struggles with bipolar disorder. As soon as I received "Cracked, Not Broken: Surviving and Thriving After a Suicide Attempt" in the mail, I could not stop reading as I kept turning the pages day and night. Not once did I get bored with this book as Kevin has a way with words, especially when describing his own mentality. I must give him praise for sharing his personal life with brutal honesty. Even after jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge and surviving such an attempt, he does not live "happily ever after": Kevin admits that each and every day is a challenge to live life to the fullest as there is no "cure" for bi polar disorder or any other mental illness. In this beautifully-written memoir, Kevin Hines does not hold anything back. Kevin reminds everyone that life is truly a gift that should not be taken for granted. Suicide has never, is never, and will never be the solution to any problem. He also gives advice on how to reach out to others if anyone is going through a difficult time with a mental illness. There is help. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever felt alone in this world due to life's struggles. In reality, no one is alone: Kevin shows that he cares about others who can relate to him by giving hope through his words or encouragement. Tim Kiska covered the television industry for The Detroit News between 1990 and 2002. A native Detroiter, he worked at the Detroit Free Press between 1970 and 1987, where he covered courts, the automotive industry and held various other reporting assignments. He joined The Detroit News in 1987. Kiska completed work on a Ph.d in history at Wayne State University in 2003 and currently teaches journalism at the University of Michigan-Dearborn and producer at WWJ News Radio 950.

Fun little stories and "where are they now" snippets of the TV personalities of Detroit from the 40s through the 80s.I grew up watching Detroit TV from the 60s through the late 70s, and it was great to hear about the old faves from back then. Most stories I knew of, but each entry gave me a little more info, too.My favorite was the "The Ghoul" from the late 70s, and the one I was really surprised didn't have an entry of his own was "Ollie Fretter" the appliance store guy. Did he really ever give away 5 pounds of coffee, I always wondered.It's a nice, quick nostalgic ride through that part of Detroit history.

Wow - What a great book! I bought it as a gift but will have to get a copy for my personal library. It was wonderful to read about the television personalities from my youth along with the other Detroit notables that this book covers. It even had the words to some of the commercial jingles that we used to sing along with. Having moved away from Detroit several years ago, I had often wondered what happened to a lot of the people I grew up watching on TV and this book answered those questions. If you were a Detroit kid in the 50's or 60's, I highly recommend that you get a copy of this book and take a stroll back to your childhood.

Of all the books dealing with the subject of local TV, FROM SOUPY TO NUTS!: A HISTORY OF DETROIT TELEVISION is my favorite. Naturally, the fact that I grew up in Detroit makes me the perfect audience for this volume.This book brought back a flood of wonderful memories. So many names, so many programs. Kid-show hosts (Soupy Sales, Johnny Ginger, Jerry Booth, etc.), horror-movie hosts (Sir Graves Ghastly, The Ghoul, Morgus the Magnificent, Count Scary), newscasters and reporters, sportscasters, weathercasters, etc. -- they're all here, and plenty of others, including some unsung behind-the-scenes personnel.I had tears in my eyes reading the chapter devoted to the pro wrestlers who were my childhood heroes: Dick the Bruiser, The Sheik, Fritz Von Erich, Johnny Valentine, Bobo Brazil, and others. In later years, I got to know some of these guys, and they were friendly and cordial -- not at all like their violent, rough-and-tumble public images.I give this book my highest recommendation.

I love this calendar and all the little bios it has of the amazing trailblazers but some of the dates are wrong! A simple search online could tell you that it's always one or two dates off from the actual event itself. Very disappointing.

Meg Cabot is a guaranteed good read! This book is fun and fast-paced. I love ghost stories and Ms. Cabot creates an interesting world where Suze is a "mediator" who gets ghosts to move on. To where she doesn't know, but she gets them out of the world of the living. Suze is a main character I can't wait to get back to. Thank goodness this is a series! I love the setting of Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA. Especially since Suze is from Manhattan. It's a nice fish out of water story where the outsider becomes the popular girl by being herself. All the characters are memorable from Suze's 3 stepbrother (Sleepy. Dopey, and Doc) to Jesse the ghost to Suze's friend's Adam and CeeCee. I can't wait to see what happens next!

This book was both my introduction in the Mediator series as well as my first book written by Meg Cabot. This book is what made me interested in writing as a profession.The novel opens with Suze moving to California after her mother remarries, and she suddenly has a super nice stepfather named Andy, and three stepbrothers who she nicknames Sleepy, Dopey, and Doc. But Suze isn't like normal girls, she is a mediator, she can see, speak to, and even interact physically with spirits who have not moved on.She isn't happy with this ability though, and finds that the house she moves into has a spirit of it's own, Jessie who died when the house was a boarding house over fifty years ago. Her house isn't the only place that houses spirits, the school she attends is haunted by a girl who died just recently, and she doesn't want to move on peacefully. It will take all of Suze's abilities to figure out how to get her to move on, whether she wants to or not,The writing style is easy to read and flows very well. It reads like it really is the thoughts of a teenage girl. I couldn't wait to read the rest of the series.

When I read the description of this book I was a bit wary to buy it. It is obviously marketed for middle and high school students and it is an older book series with very little reviewers. Because it is the only book I have seen on Amazon with a solid 3+ star rating from everyone (and because I devoured the Pretty Little Liars books for the same target audience) I decided to give it a shot. I was surprised at how enjoyable it was. I found it to be a sort of lighthearted combination between the Ghost Whisperer TV show and Buffy the Vampire Slayer (I’m embarrassed to admit that although I am in my mid-twenties I still love watching reruns of the first couple seasons… can’t break a 16 year habit I guess). Shadowland is humorous and definitely kept me interested – I finished it in two short sessions. I only had three issues with the book that warranted a 4 star rating.I was a bit annoyed with Suze’s tendency to develop a crush on any guy that shows her the slightest bit of attention, living or dead. I know she is 16 but come on!The phrase “kick butt” was used waaaay too much. I understand it is a teen book and don’t want to advocate profanity, but I cannot take anyone who uses that phrase seriously and I thought it made her sound like a seven year old child, not the tough chick she claims to be. Considering worse words are used in overabundance, that I cannot say here because Amazon won't let me, I think the author could have matured the language a little or just found a new phrase to use. Another reviewer also mentioned her excessive use of “I mean” and wow, they were not kidding…Lastly, Suze names her new stepbrothers after 3 of the 7 dwarves and always refers to them by those names in her head. It got a bit confusing when their real names were used. She calls them the dwarf names on accident all the time and they never question it either. I just thought that was kind of weird lol I guess I’m just being nitpicky. These are just small things I thought about while reading the book, but nothing that would dissuade me from reading the book or liking it.If you’re sick of all of those overdramatic teen paranormal books and want something fun to read I suggest trying this book, if your pockets can allow it. They only take a few hours to read yet cost about $7 a pop unless you have prime or like to buy used books.

Content is great- a Christian Classic and very practicle readable mayerial for the average Catholic. Most others classics are for nuns- priests- and intelectuals. This book however is actually rather humorous !!! Capturing our human weakness at its best and worse yet makes you want to do better and believe the devote life is available to all no matter what your age and job. This is not a "guilt and shame " book but more like a surviors manual to make it safely home to God!

This book is an incredible resource for those wishing to deepen their spiritual life. The insights and directions it contains are clear, easy to understand, and invaluable. On a few rare occasions the suggestions can be taken with a grain of salt, as the intended audience is to a reader living in the 1600s, but overall it is shockingly appropriate for the challenges those attempting to live a devout life have to face in our modern world. In Philothea or An Introduction to a Devout Life, Saint Francis de Sales does a masterful job of setting the stage by counseling us in understanding a desire for a devout life. He then instructs us on our approach to God in prayer and through the sacraments. Then, de Sales devotes an entire part of the book to the practice of virtue. He places special emphasis on dealing with temptation. Saint Francis de Sales concludes his book with an entire part devoted to the renewal of the soul and the confirmation of the devotion.Although written in the early 17th century, this book is extremely easy to read and digest. The short chapters come across as a series of homilies, written for the common man to easily understand. Saint Francis de Sales’ writing style is filled with compassion and love, encouragement and hope; hope that we too, can live a devout life! This book has always been on my recommended reading list for anyone who wants to learn more about virtue. I use this book as my “go-to” guide when seeking advice.

This book is a classic for a reason. It is hard to believe that it was written 400 years ago. It is easy to read and the wisdom and holiness is clear in every word. It has really helped me and a friend of mine seek greater peace and holiness within our own lives. A great companion to scripture reading.

Having read this book, I can now understand why St. Francis de Sales is a doctor of the Church. Simply put, Philothea, or An Introduction to the Devout Life is a roadmap to Heaven. But unlike many of the theological tracts or mystical tomes which one often finds professing to do the same thing, this book is, very simply, a practical manual for living a devout life in a world that is often antagonistic to Christianity. It is also the closest many will get to having a canonized saint as one's own spiritual director.The advice offered is excellent, grounded in sacred Scripture and the teachings of the saints, and enlivened with colorful metaphors. (St. Francis obviously had an affinity for bees.) Though St. Francis lived 400 years ago, his guidance easily translates to life in the 21st century. He had a keen insight into the workings of the human mind, the devious yet innocent-seeming temptations presented by the devil, and the challenges faced by the soul seeking to live a pious life amid the petty cares of everyday life. And his insights transcend time and culture.No one can read this book without finding a section that directly applies to them, whatever their state of life. St. Francis's spiritual exercises, admittedly, are difficult. But who can doubt that following them to the full would have wonderfully efficacious effects on the soul? I have begun instituting a subset of them in my own life and have already reaped benefits. I hope to include more of them as time goes on and my spiritual stamina improves.St. Francis's advice on correct behavior, attitude, and personal morality is incredibly wise. Those who read and accept these teachings will assuredly live happier, more fulfilling lives, which are more pleasing to God. The several chapters on friendship--specifically true friendship versus worldly friendship--were of particular utility to me. I think many young Catholics would do well to read and ponder St. Francis's words on the subject so as to avoid temptation and the near occasion of sin in their relationships.In short, this book is a masterpiece of spiritual advice and I can't recommend it highly enough. Best of all, one need not read it cover-to-cover. It may be dipped into for incidental advice based on the reader's own flaws, strengths, state of life, and spiritual needs. If you are looking for a straight-forward, uncomplicated path to Christian devotion, this book is it.

This was mandatory reading when I was a novice 44 years ago. I have been noticing quotes from the book on the internet and decided to reread it. It is still very relevant for Christians today wishing to deepen their relationship with Christ. The foundations of spirituality don't change over time, they still continue to help make sense regarding what is going on in one's life. I would recommend reading the Introduction to the Devout Life especially if you haven't done so before. You will be amazed by the many helpful insights it will open up to you.
