Meg Cabot is a guaranteed good read! This book is fun and fast-paced. I love ghost stories and Ms. Cabot creates an interesting world where Suze is a "mediator" who gets ghosts to move on. To where she doesn't know, but she gets them out of the world of the living. Suze is a main character I can't wait to get back to. Thank goodness this is a series! I love the setting of Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA. Especially since Suze is from Manhattan. It's a nice fish out of water story where the outsider becomes the popular girl by being herself. All the characters are memorable from Suze's 3 stepbrother (Sleepy. Dopey, and Doc) to Jesse the ghost to Suze's friend's Adam and CeeCee. I can't wait to see what happens next!

This book was both my introduction in the Mediator series as well as my first book written by Meg Cabot. This book is what made me interested in writing as a profession.The novel opens with Suze moving to California after her mother remarries, and she suddenly has a super nice stepfather named Andy, and three stepbrothers who she nicknames Sleepy, Dopey, and Doc. But Suze isn't like normal girls, she is a mediator, she can see, speak to, and even interact physically with spirits who have not moved on.She isn't happy with this ability though, and finds that the house she moves into has a spirit of it's own, Jessie who died when the house was a boarding house over fifty years ago. Her house isn't the only place that houses spirits, the school she attends is haunted by a girl who died just recently, and she doesn't want to move on peacefully. It will take all of Suze's abilities to figure out how to get her to move on, whether she wants to or not,The writing style is easy to read and flows very well. It reads like it really is the thoughts of a teenage girl. I couldn't wait to read the rest of the series.

When I read the description of this book I was a bit wary to buy it. It is obviously marketed for middle and high school students and it is an older book series with very little reviewers. Because it is the only book I have seen on Amazon with a solid 3+ star rating from everyone (and because I devoured the Pretty Little Liars books for the same target audience) I decided to give it a shot. I was surprised at how enjoyable it was. I found it to be a sort of lighthearted combination between the Ghost Whisperer TV show and Buffy the Vampire Slayer (I’m embarrassed to admit that although I am in my mid-twenties I still love watching reruns of the first couple seasons… can’t break a 16 year habit I guess). Shadowland is humorous and definitely kept me interested – I finished it in two short sessions. I only had three issues with the book that warranted a 4 star rating.I was a bit annoyed with Suze’s tendency to develop a crush on any guy that shows her the slightest bit of attention, living or dead. I know she is 16 but come on!The phrase “kick butt” was used waaaay too much. I understand it is a teen book and don’t want to advocate profanity, but I cannot take anyone who uses that phrase seriously and I thought it made her sound like a seven year old child, not the tough chick she claims to be. Considering worse words are used in overabundance, that I cannot say here because Amazon won't let me, I think the author could have matured the language a little or just found a new phrase to use. Another reviewer also mentioned her excessive use of “I mean” and wow, they were not kidding…Lastly, Suze names her new stepbrothers after 3 of the 7 dwarves and always refers to them by those names in her head. It got a bit confusing when their real names were used. She calls them the dwarf names on accident all the time and they never question it either. I just thought that was kind of weird lol I guess I’m just being nitpicky. These are just small things I thought about while reading the book, but nothing that would dissuade me from reading the book or liking it.If you’re sick of all of those overdramatic teen paranormal books and want something fun to read I suggest trying this book, if your pockets can allow it. They only take a few hours to read yet cost about $7 a pop unless you have prime or like to buy used books.

Content is great- a Christian Classic and very practicle readable mayerial for the average Catholic. Most others classics are for nuns- priests- and intelectuals. This is not a "guilt and shame " book but more like a surviors manual to make it safely home to God!

He places special emphasis on dealing with temptation. Saint Francis de Sales concludes his book with an entire part devoted to the renewal of the soul and the confirmation of the devotion.Although written in the early 17th century, this book is extremely easy to read and digest. The short chapters come across as a series of homilies, written for the common man to easily understand. Saint Francis de Sales’ writing style is filled with compassion and love, encouragement and hope; hope that we too, can live a devout life! This book has always been on my recommended reading list for anyone who wants to learn more about virtue. I use this book as my “go-to” guide when seeking advice.

This book is a classic for a reason. It is hard to believe that it was written 400 years ago. It is easy to read and the wisdom and holiness is clear in every word. It has really helped me and a friend of mine seek greater peace and holiness within our own lives. A great companion to scripture reading.

Having read this book, I can now understand why St. Francis de Sales is a doctor of the Church. Simply put, Philothea, or An Introduction to the Devout Life is a roadmap to Heaven. But unlike many of the theological tracts or mystical tomes which one often finds professing to do the same thing, this book is, very simply, a practical manual for living a devout life in a world that is often antagonistic to Christianity. It is also the closest many will get to having a canonized saint as one's own spiritual director.The advice offered is excellent, grounded in sacred Scripture and the teachings of the saints, and enlivened with colorful metaphors. (St. Francis obviously had an affinity for bees.) Though St. Francis lived 400 years ago, his guidance easily translates to life in the 21st century. He had a keen insight into the workings of the human mind, the devious yet innocent-seeming temptations presented by the devil, and the challenges faced by the soul seeking to live a pious life amid the petty cares of everyday life. And his insights transcend time and culture.No one can read this book without finding a section that directly applies to them, whatever their state of life. St. Francis's spiritual exercises, admittedly, are difficult. But who can doubt that following them to the full would have wonderfully efficacious effects on the soul? I have begun instituting a subset of them in my own life and have already reaped benefits. The style of writing and flow of logic is almost stunningly hard to follow. The images that he describes are haunting and indelible. This book reads more like poetry or a profound conversation dipping and spinning in creative insights. Maybe it's because he's French (or a genius), but the connections he makes within a single sentence are so wild, so unexpected, even boundless in terms of all practical experience, that it will open your mind and make you re-evaluate how you perceive your world. I'm not sure I grasp everything. The ideas are too dense. It's better experienced like a pungent cheese - in small portions and with plenty of time to digest.

This is a whimsical book which explores the poetics of space, of the home, and the environment. It asks you to redefine your awareness of spaces you take for granted and provides appreciation and perspective about what space is really about. What I liked is how the author combined poetry, philosophy and design to create this treatise and its one I'll return to from time to time to help me appreciate my own space anew.

I read this book as a graduate student in Boston about 40 years ago, and re-purchased it just recently to have a second leisurely look at it...to remember its beauty and provocative meanings. This book changed my life in a wonderful way; it gave me a new vocabulary to understand my experiences of living, it confirmed and affirmed how I daily lived with a personal 'poetics' called Me...Professor Gaston Bachelard, from France, defined a sensibility and sensitivity called "intimate immensities", which is one way of expressing a pantheistic and human "phenomenology". If you are an artist or musician or poet, etc. you "got it in you" and you recognize "it" in everything around you... Lao Tzu in ancient China called it the Tao, there are many other names from many countries and cultures...The only caution I would note about this book, is that it is densely written in a professorial philosophical way; it not a casual read. I can suggest many children's picture books that express a similar sentiment, more with pictures than with university-level text. But if you enjoy "a sudden salience on the surface of the psyche" (page 1 of the Introduction), then this book is for you...

I love this book, and it is even better in the original language. However, I purchased the paperback in English to replace a hardbound copy that was not returned to me in a loan. The quality of the paperback copy is very poor, like a newspaper print. If I were you and wanted to read it, I would order it in Kindle or look for a hard bound copy.

Im into the whole space and body theme in architecture. Bachelard makes a very compelling book about how space transforms and inspires us.Its not an easy book. It requires dedication and notes (i took a lot of notes and highlights of the book).But in the end, its worth it. Very interesting and something you think about it. Something you really sit and dream of future projects without having that stigma that is to look at other projects and try to copy them.It is a book to dream

This will probably take you quite some time to read. I've managed to stretch it over 2 years re-reading over sections, skipping around, and taking long breaks to soak and absorb it in. You can definitely read it quicker, but I have found that it has actually become very involved in my life reading it over time and has positively changed my perspective as an observer.Highly recommend this to creatives: writers, sculptors, artists, philosophers, people who are curious.

This book was an optional resource in a class I took years back, so I bought it and returned to finish only recently. I have it 4 stars based on an optimistic view of what I might have grasped had I a background of education in the underlying philosophies comprising concepts discussed. I plowed through many obscurity only to find within much beauty. The book as a whole felt to me as a prose poem. The quotes and references mainly are to French poets I've never heard of, but he does include much Rilke who has long been one of my favorites, and I acquired an expanded perspective there. There is an ephemeral, dreamlike quality and references to hashish make me wonder if chemicals were involved!

I purchased this book after reading the quote by Gaston Bachelard, “I should say: the house shelters day-dreaming, the house protects the dreamer, the house allows one to dream in peace.” I was intrigued by the idea that the spaces we live and have lived in shape who were are. I've been reading this in bits as it's very "deep" and somewhat hard to digest. Not a light read, but very though provoking.

But really well written and thought provoking

Churchill's "Cloud 9" is a crazy insane roller-coaster of gender-flips, shifting characters, crude sex, and anachronisms. Challenging notions of feminine sexuality, this play is definitely both one of the most insightful and strangest texts I've read in a while.
