Amazon.com Review

This is a deep, magical, densely captivating book about space, our homes, how we live in them, and how dwellings and space affect us; it is as much a book of philosophy as a work of serious literature. It requires careful, preferably leisurely reading, with the possibility of moments to pause and digest and re-read the words. It will change the way you look at your home and your life, providing a deeper, more insightful relationship with the spaces you occupy.

The style of writing and flow of logic is almost stunningly hard to follow. The images that he describes are haunting and indelible. This book reads more like poetry or a profound conversation dipping and spinning in creative insights. Maybe it's because he's French (or a genius), but the connections he makes within a single sentence are so wild, so unexpected, even boundless in terms of all practical experience, that it will open your mind and make you re-evaluate how you perceive your world. I'm not sure I grasp everything. The ideas are too dense. It's better experienced like a pungent cheese - in small portions and with plenty of time to digest.

This is a whimsical book which explores the poetics of space, of the home, and the environment. It asks you to redefine your awareness of spaces you take for granted and provides appreciation and perspective about what space is really about. What I liked is how the author combined poetry, philosophy and design to create this treatise and its one I'll return to from time to time to help me appreciate my own space anew.

I read this book as a graduate student in Boston about 40 years ago, and re-purchased it just recently to have a second leisurely look at it...to remember its beauty and provocative meanings. This book changed my life in a wonderful way; it gave me a new vocabulary to understand my experiences of living, it confirmed and affirmed how I daily lived with a personal 'poetics' called Me...Professor Gaston Bachelard, from France, defined a sensibility and sensitivity called "intimate immensities", which is one way of expressing a pantheistic and human "phenomenology". If you are an artist or musician or poet, etc. you "got it in you" and you recognize "it" in everything around you... Lao Tzu in ancient China called it the Tao, there are many other names from many countries and cultures...The only caution I would note about this book, is that it is densely written in a professorial philosophical way; it not a casual read. I can suggest many children's picture books that express a similar sentiment, more with pictures than with university-level text. But if you enjoy "a sudden salience on the surface of the psyche" (page 1 of the Introduction), then this book is for you...

I love this book, and it is even better in the original language. However, I purchased the paperback in English to replace a hardbound copy that was not returned to me in a loan. The quality of the paperback copy is very poor, like a newspaper print. If I were you and wanted to read it, I would order it in Kindle or look for a hard bound copy.

Im into the whole space and body theme in architecture. Bachelard makes a very compelling book about how space transforms and inspires us.Its not an easy book. It requires dedication and notes (i took a lot of notes and highlights of the book). But in the end, its worth it. Very interesting and something you think about it. Something you really sit and dream of future projects without having that stigma that is to look at other projects and try to copy them.It is a book to dream

This will probably take you quite some time to read. I've managed to stretch it over 2 years re-reading over sections, skipping around, and taking long breaks to soak and absorb it in. You can definitely read it quicker, but I have found that it has actually become very involved in my life reading it over time and has positively changed my perspective as an observer.Highly recommend this to creatives: writers, sculptors, artists, philosophers, people who are curious.

This book was an optional resource in a class I took years back, so I bought it and returned to finish only recently. I have it 4 stars based on an optimistic view of what I might have grasped had I a background of education in the underlying philosophies comprising concepts discussed. I plowed through many obscurity only to find within much beauty. The book as a whole felt to me as a prose poem. The quotes and references mainly are to French poets I've never heard of, but he does include much Rilke who has long been one of my favorites, and I acquired an expanded perspective there. There is an ephemeral, dreamlike quality and references to hashish make me wonder if chemicals were involved!

I purchased this book after reading the quote by Gaston Bachelard, “I should say: the house shelters day-dreaming, the house protects the dreamer, the house allows one to dream in peace.” I was intrigued by the idea that the spaces we live and have lived in shape who were are. I've been reading this in bits as it's very "deep" and somewhat hard to digest. Not a light read, but very though provoking.

Amazon.com Review

Reading the script for Caryl Churchill's 1979 play about sex and love is a special workout for the imagination. First, she asks you to imagine characters whose sexual identities and alliances shift constantly. Then she asks you to imagine that most of the characters make an impossible leap in time, from colonial Africa in the Victorian age to contemporary Britain. Lastly, she asks you to imagine some of the male characters played by women and some female characters played by men. Churchill likes to get things good and mixed up so all the audience's preconceptions about gender, romance, and "lifestyle" are scrambled, neutralized, and possibly even rebuilt. The title refers to the state of orgasmic and emotional bliss that everyone in this play seems to be striving for so desperately.

But really well written and thought provoking

Churchill's "Cloud 9" is a crazy insane roller-coaster of gender-flips, shifting characters, crude sex, and anachronisms. Challenging notions of feminine sexuality, this play is definitely both one of the most insightful and strangest texts I've read in a while.

Love this play! All good things! Sex, comedy, heartache, gender swap, etc!

Wow there is so much to say about this book! where do I even start!?first of all I can say that it's pretty great. just look at the cover. Need I say more? I can but I won't. You'll just have to read it. ;)Just kidding cause I kissed it!

great book - lives up to the rating

This play is cool but confusing. Very abstract. I would recommend it to people who like abstract things. So yea

Required for my daughter's acting course. Ordered because the price was cheaper than the college bookstore.

great

Good book

Exactly as described.

Amazing playwright, Cherrie Moraga is brilliant. The book arrived in great condition.

Good read

Cherrie Moraga is a terrific writer, and all of these plays are great. A couple of months ago I saw a staged reading of her play The Hungry Woman, and can't wait until it is published.

I know that the author is trying to be "authentic", but this is really, really hard to read. It would be fine if it was in English, in Spanish, or even in some mixture of the two. But it is not. It is in some freakish new thing that I am referring to as Spanglish. Incorporated amongst words that my limited knowledge tells me are Spanish. Then, there are words that are English, although there aren't very many. But the real problem is the words that don't exist in any language, like "gointu". This is awful and I can only barely - by reading it aloud - understand what the people are saying. Furthermore, the stories are not very good. The characters have little depth in the one play that I read (which was roughly 60% of the book), except for one, and they all seem stereotypes. This, along with the language, makes it seem as if it were written by some racist, rather than a Chicano/a.All told, there is no way I could conscientiously recommend this to anyone.Harkius

The Nine of Us: Growing Up Kennedy, by Smith, Jean Kennedy

From the Back Cover

In this evocative and affectionate memoir, Ambassador Jean Kennedy Smith, the last surviving child of Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy and Joseph P. Kennedy Sr., offers an intimate and illuminating look at a time when she and her siblings lived and learned together under one roof.Prompted by interesting tidbits in the daily papers, Rose and Joe Kennedy would pose questions to their nine children at the dinner table: “Where has Amelia Earhart gone?” “Do you think there will be war in Europe?” “What will the British do?” It was a nightly custom that helped shape the Kennedys into the men and women they would become. Before Joe and Rose’s children emerged as leaders on the world stage, they were simply a loving circle of brothers and sisters who played football, swam, sailed, read, and pursued their interests. They were children inspired by their parents, who instilled in them a strong work ethic, a deep love of country, and an intense appreciation for the sacrifices their ancestors made to come to America. “No whining in this house!” was their father’s regular refrain. It was his way of reminding them not to complain and to be grateful for what they had, and he always emphasized how important it is to give back. As Jean Kennedy Smith writes of her parents, “They knew how to cure our hurts, bind our wounds, listen to our woes, and help us enjoy life. We were lucky children indeed.” With charming anecdotes and dozens of rarely seen family photographs, The Nine of Us offers indelible, elegantly rendered portraits of a closely knit family known throughout the world.

Having read so many books on the Kennedys--including Ted Kennedy's memoir True Compass: A Memoir and Rose Kennedy's Times to Remember--I wasn't sure what to expect from Jean Kennedy Smith (former ambassador to Ireland), the youngest Kennedy daughter--and the only daughter to write a memoir. It wasn't exactly what I had hoped for, but I wasn't really disappointed either. Jean Kennedy's memoir is obviously heavily influenced by the family legacy--the knowledge that she is the surviving child of Rose and Joseph Kennedy, whose three sons--and whose family itself--mean so much to so many Americans. With that responsibility in mind, she shares cozy memories, warm and positive ones, of growing up in that family.Modestly, Jean's memories in this book are all shared with a brother or sister or her parents--except when she goes away to college and her roommate (soon to become her close friend) is Ethel Skakel, who will soon fall in love with and marry Jean's older brother Bobby. Other than that, and meeting her own husband (who also became an important help to her brothers), Jean keeps the family front and center in her memoir--and, of course, she's right, that's exactly who we want to hear about. It's a slim book--more about Kennedys growing up than the political years and decisions--and you won't find any scandals--but there's a quiet charm of days gone by, when even adults played touch football on the lawn near the ocean and evening entertainment was family word games, listening to a radio program, or --for the Kennedy children-- the treat of having their father (at one time a movie producer who helped start RKO studios) bring home a new movie to show to the family and friends in the private screening room at Hyannis Port. She mentions current events sparsely as needed--the family life in London before the war, when Joe was U.S. ambassador there (the first Catholic ambassador to Protestant England). Historical events are touched on lightly and infrequently; this is a personal book, not a history lesson.Unlike her brother Ted, Jean doesn't write about the tough school years at a variety of boarding schools for the boys and Catholic school for the girls. Instead, she describes the (possibly over-idealized) summers together on the Cape. Unlike her mother, she doesn't talk about the family struggles of past generations, or say much about the business of Joe or the frequent long travels of Rose. Biographers pointed out that Joe made many decisions for the boys and Rose was closer in many ways with the girls, and that comes through here, too, although Joe still seems the warmer and more affectionate parent. Rose, shows herself as disciplined, a natural (and ambitious) teacher and a mother who wanted her children to use the summer vacations to develop skills in everything from swimming to dancing to tennis to typing--punctuated with a daily hour for reading (Jack loved this; some of the others found it an unwelcome restriction). Both parents were highly aspirational, instilling in their children the importance of family, of learning, of accomplishing important things in life and in not taking their comforts and good fortune for granted.Rose's memoir will show you a little more the downside--she's honest about hitting the children (Eunice calls it "beating" them) with coat hangers--and her guilt about frequent trips away from home, with Joe taking over many duties, along with the nurses. In her own memoir, Rose and Joe seem very strict, very demanding--high standards and demands mixed with pride and indulgence for their nine children with their high spirits, noise and fun--being sure to keep them unspoiled and engaged in meaningful activities.Jean loves her parents and her brothers and sisters and has nothing bad to say about any of them. She does, briefly, mention the sad times--her oldest brother's death in the war, her eldest sister's botched lobotomy that left her severely mentally and physically impaired, another sister's fatal plane crash when she was barely 28 years old. Then, of course, she mentions the public service of her three brothers and -- briefly, and without much detail, the assassinations of Jack and Bobby. There's not much here about her own children--she knows we want to hear about Jack and Bobby and Teddy and the fun growing up and how great they were as adults and how she loved and idolized them just like so many of us do still--only Jean was there. It's a light book, a fast read, with a photo on almost every open double-page, not on special photo paper so its not very well detailed, but they're great to see, and makes it a bit like a scrapbook feeling. Where else will you read about--and see--the Halloween costumes Jackie designed for her and Jean while first lady--so that they could go trick or treating in cognito with their children? Jean relied a lot on her own journals for the stories she shares. If you are a fan of the Kennedy's, her book is not going to tell you anything shocking or (if you've read a lot) much that's new, but it's Jack and Bobby and Teddy's sister--she's the last of their generation, and she wants to tell us about what it was like back then. Seriously, who could resist grabbing a cup of tea and enjoying her memories? , .

An engaging, well written read about an American royal family, Jean Kennedy Smith has invited us in to share the wonderfulmemories of their childhood and beyond. Their lives were molded by wise and focused parents whose high standards instilled in themqualities of intelligence, curiosity, spiritualism, family loyalty and a sense of purpose. I did not want to put her book down as my eyes closed at night.

This book tells Jean Kennedy's love for her brothers and sisters. Because the family is so big she could not go into great detail. She does not write about any of the scandals in the family but did write very briefly about John, Joe, kick, and Bobby's deaths, and the tragedy of Rosemary's lobotomy. Light reading.

Great simple read on the historic Kennedy family. Jean gives us an insight into life in the Kennedy household with family pictures never seen before. Jean writes this as a Kennedy member, not author and I deeply enjoyed her bias as a Kennedy member. Jean, I am a biased lover of the Kennedy family and all things Kennedy. At this point I have read everything published. I enjoyed this "fly on the wall" of the Kennedy home perspective. I will never lose my intense love of everything Kennedy.

Interesting, touching autobiography of one of the younger Kennedy children that taught me a number of things I didn't know about the family. Written from a fairly protective family viewpoint, which is understandable and expected. The love of her family is felt throughout the book. I ended up buying a copy to send to my mom, because she was interested in some of the things I mentioned that she had not known as well. Want to read more about the other siblings. Fascinating family and time

I have not read many books about the Kennedys, and none about their growing - up years. This was a very interesting look at their lives as children, and the things their parents considered important in raising them. Children are not raised this way any longer, and it's very telling. This book explains how one family came to be so important to our nation, and gives direction on leading children into lives of faith and service.

Not a good read at all! I am a Kennedy follower andthis book is way "too flowerly". So many facts are leftout.Do not recommend.

Interesting account about the Kennedy family. A lot of tragedy in this family. This story was written by the youngest daughter, so she wasn't in the picture for many years. This isn't the normal 11 member family because they had the money to hire household help. I will say the parents taught their children to have integrity and patriotism.

What a great fun book to read to kids, even a three year old loves it but more for 5 and over!

A curious, imaginative, young boy, who barely speaks as a child and isn’t like the all the other students, nor does he want to be, grows into one of the most genius minds that changes life as we know it. A celebration of Einstein’s curiosity and genius will pique the interest of any budding scientist. A must have book for every classroom and home of the precocious child. Why I Like This Book: An amazing way to bring the life and work of Albert Einstein alive to children. What a perfect introduction to the young reader about the famous physicist who never stopped questioning the world around him. The whimsical illustrations illuminate each page, and it shines a light on the underlying message the story shares about the value of the imagination and how that should be nourished and not crushed. An awakening of the senses and a fascinating read!

I had to read this book to write a biography on Einstein for my Literature in Childhood Education class. It was cheap enough to just buy it on Kindle instead of hunting down in the library. I didn't think much of the class itself, but this book surprised me. I learned facts about Einstein that were designed to appeal for children, but why wouldn't adults like to know silly facts like Einstein hated socks? I learned a lot of quirky things about the man and I got a perfect score on my assignment. I'm very happy. The illustrations are consistent with a children's book and parallel the story very well, it would be easy for children learning to read to follow along with this book. Buy it for yourself or your kid! It's good!

Seeing my 7 year old read this book was an experience I will never forget. He often feels alone due to his gifted mind. He didn't talk until he turned 3 and was misdiagnosed with ASD and Asbergers. Once he started talking he interrupted his teacher with questions and was very exited to learn new things and explore solutions to his ideas. His kindergarten behavior was not asynchronous to his intelligence. which showed up during his ADHD eval. His IQ is in the top 2% on the charts which is great but the real lesson to learn in this book is to be yourself no matter how that looks to the rest of the world!

Amazing book! My 6 year old devoured this book in about 20 mins. He AND myself absolutely loved learning more about Einstein. The story is easy to read and it tells kids that it is ok to be different and in some aspect it is a advantageous feature to have and encourage them to never stop dreaming in achieving your wildest dreams. He read this book a couple of time and will revisit again the rest of his childhood, I hope!

This book has become a favorite in our house! While this book is recommended for the 6-9 age group, my 4 year old gets a kick out of it. She doesn't yet understand some of the scientific words and concepts (i.e. atoms, magnetism, etc;) but that doesn't stop her from enjoying the story. What I love about this book is that it's based on a real person and true events - finally, a children's book that's not based on farm animals! It starts out by detailing how little Albert didn't talk much when he was a child, was mischievous in class and getting in trouble and didn't relate well to the other children. It then goes into his career - how he wanted to be a teacher but ended up working in a government office. Eventually, the book talks about Albert's ideas and recognition. You also learn about Albert's quirks - how he didn't like to wear socks, enjoyed ice cream and the violin and liked to wear the same baggy clothes. Unfortunately, it does talk about his smoking pipe which I had to explain to my daughter - I turned that into a lesson about how smoking is bad for you but it was something they used to do in Albert's time because they didn't know any better! The hardcover version is definitely sturdier but the new paperback version holds up well. I do wish that they didn't put the font in a red color on some pages - it's hard to see with the background color.

What makes this book so perfect is the collaboration between the author and the illustrator. The pictures match the text so well, and really capture the intensity and chaos in Albert Einstein's mind. I've read it a few times and love it.

Although this book is meant for older children, I read it to my 1.5yo and he was hooked! Obviously he doesn't understand many of the main concepts, but he knows who "Albert" is and recognizes him in other situations. And he sits quietly and listens to the entire book which does not happen very often. I wish the authors would do more books like this about other prominent people.

Lovely story and illustrations. I understand why it was nominated for a Newberry Award. Can't wait to give it to my grandson for his birthday. I made him an Explorer kit, including a compass and a magnifying glass to go with it. The fact that it is the story of a real boy means that my grandson will have an interest in Einstein firmly planted in his young mind and heart. I think it could lead to reading more about Einstein as he grows older. And it will be so much fun to help him explore the world around him like a little budding scientist/explorer.

I read this book fairly quickly because quite frankly it was relaxing just reading it. To me that said that the author walks in the world he has described and wants to help others find the clarity and peace that he's attained. I had never thought of the concept of being "alergic" to a color because of the feelings it calls forth, yet doing some of the exercises proved this to be the case. I will read it again, at a slower pace because I think there's much to be gained by doing so.

I love this book and wanted to highlight (no pun intended) sentences in each paragraph. The book starts with a quote from Nikola Tesla- "My brain is only a receiver. In the Universe there is a core from which we obtain knowledge, strength, and inspiration. I have not penetrated into the secrets of this core, but I know that it exists."Light animates our projections, and I think that photons, particles, waves, and the observer effect are the key to our ever understanding life, God, and consciousness.Well written and drawing from tremendous first hand experience, Dr. Liberman discusses light and health, color therapy and color homeopathy- plus gives simple exercises that improve not only eyesight, but also awareness. What I found most useful is the 'experiment' that he said has profoundly improved his life. It is a way to align seeing with focusing inner vision to what he calls 'presence'. I personally think it connects the observer to omnipresence by making our internal light coherent rather than scattered.om·ni·pres·ence : the presence of God everywhere at the same time.

The first moment I held this sparkling book in my hands, I felt lighter. Reading Luminous Life was very healing for me. I thoroughly enjoyed the many insights I received and the many Aha moments I had. I have been a serious spiritual seeker my whole life and thanks to this book, many of my burning questions were answered. Reading this book was like lightly rubbing my eyes clear of confusion, leaving me with bright eyes to fully see the love and support all around me. I am so grateful for Jacob reminding me that there is absolutely nothing wrong with me and there had never been anything wrong with me. After reading, Luminous Life, I now feel more courageous to surrender to the friendly flow and to fully accept, embrace and trust the unfolding of life. I thank GOD for Jacob Liberman and his new book for inspiring me and showing me the possibility to feel right at home in every area of my life!

The book contains great insights on scientific as well as on the philosofical and practical essence of light and its role in our lives. For me, the most intriguing was the idea that the light continually guides us to the next step in our lives. When light plays such a crucial role in the lives of plants and animals, why should we be any different? What catches our eye is, indeed, the next step that either shows us what is next or brings us a glimps of who we are and thus, increases our self-awareness. Many times in my life have I witnessed this to be true. It does not mean it is going to be nice or comfortable but it will enable us to grow. This book is a treasure in revealing the mechanism behind the process.

The author brings fresh perspectives to the intersection of science and spirituality. His explorations of how light as a medium through which our awakened self can become known to us once again are inspiring and illuminating. The prose was very accessible. I recognize the information in its pages as truths to be embodied and lived. You would be well served to add this to your library of books to nourish your souls journey

“Your book offers a new way to transform my struggles in life into an experience of gently connecting with awareness at every second. I am very grateful that you wrote it. It gives “simple” tools to help and ground me. It is a constant reminder that acceptance is the way, that life when we go with the flow is guiding us .”the light, life,is always here for us , are we choosing life or the fight with it . Let’s go back to the source , take a second , breathe and let the light force of the universe guide you into seeing from your soul . This book is a companion manual to help you go through the ups and downs a little better every time . Thank you Jacob!

Science and spirituality meet in such a fundamentally real way. Luminous Life details how our perception is based on what we think we see, as opposed to what is really possible. As a believer in more than meets the eye, this book provides intelligent access to our full potential as human beings. Insightful, compassionate, telling... there is so much to glean from these pages, that I look forward to reading them again.

It's almost a book on how to stay in touch with your spiritual side. The book is great for those looking to live a better life and the exercises in it are scientific because in other books this author has invented therapies that eliminate the need for glasses. We are all made of light and life is about living like you are a child. This book is amazing
