I used this book in a Graduate course for teachers of Mathematics. They loved it! Why? It had a different focus then just getting to figure out what to do with the numbers in the problem. This book realized that most understand that in many different ways. This book asked the question: "What do we do with the money we accrue? What do we do about outrageous cost of borrowing money? How is the environment effected by the way we use resources? What about hidden cost? How much money do we spend in heating and cooling some of our buildings? How does this choice effect other choices? This book helped us to see the need to review the questions we are asking in math and to 'rethink' mathematics for the future not the past!

This book has a lot of good ideas for teaching mathematics in a way that will appeal to students. Less stuff for higher-level mathematics, but the lower-level stuff is really quite good and relates mathematics to the real world.

This is a valuable book. There are 2 main sections: first section is a thesaurus by topic. Second section lists words alphabetically and tells you where to find them in the topical section. There are fabulous lists throughout the book based on topics, such as: states and their capitals. 200+ countries and their capitals. Rivers of the world, Lakes of the world, mountains of the world.

The print is so tiny for this large volume book. I guess it is so huge that they had to compensate lest it enlarge further but really, what is the difference it was a bit bigger..none that I would mind. The type print is very small compared to my old much loved Roget's that is in shambles from years of use, however, this one far exceeds my expectations as far as content.One other thing I find odd is that when referencing the word and going to back to the numerical area that the numbers are forward facing instead of backward toward the alphabetized section. That is a bit awkward for me as I am use to looking toward the number from the alphabetic section. I suppose I will get use to it but it doesn't make sense to me it was cataloged this way.It's a fabulous thesaurus though!

Indispensable! I gave my old copy of this to my nephew going away to college. What a mistake for me! I was in graduate school at the time and had another thesaurus in dictionary form..and figured that would be fine. Yuck. I found myself wishing I had this version again..so I just bought another one.The way I use it is not to come up with words to impress people (well, not usually) but rather to remember a word that I want to use, but can't exactly recall (must be my age). I know you all have done it and can relate to that great feeling of finally finding that word! The conceptual setup is perfect for this becuase sometimes you can get close with a guess, but you need that whole section on weight (for example) to really pinpoint your word (not just synonyms for heavy).

For me as a student, translator, and writer, this thesaurus has become one of my best friends. It is organized in a very creative way, with an index in the back referring to the various sections of the book's body, where terms are grouped by topic. In the index, you look up the word for which you need related words, and then you choose between the many terms under that heading, each with a distinct variation in meaning. You can thereby turn to the section that best relates to the meaning you are looking for.Once you've turned to the section referred to in the index, you not only find an extensive list of synonyms for that term, but you also have, on that same page, words that are related but which fall in different parts of speech. That has been very useful for me. And since the terms are grouped by topic, you can look through neighboring entries and pages of entries, finding all kinds of similar and related words, whereas, in a traditional thesaurus layout, the only thing adjacent to your entry would be those words that start with the same letters.In short, what makes this thesaurus so wonderful is that you have access to an extensive range of word power, since the words referenced in the entry you're interested in are not limited to the space just below the word itself: they are spread throughout the book in logical groups, and the index quickly directs you to the sense of the word that you are interested in.

There are many editions of Roget's Thesaurus, but this is one of the best. The print is large enough to easily read, and in each section there are several alternative words or ideas suggested. For example, if one looks up the idea "event" other closely related ideas are listed, and when one goes to the word section that reflect the idea of event, several alternate idea selections are listed with their corresponding number location (not just the word, but the word idea and its number location). This makes researching the concept much easier.All in all this is the best thesaurus I have seen. Other thesaurus's which are more dictionary-like simply do not have the range of words and concepts that Roget's reflects. Believe me, if I had taken the time to research a few words for this review it would have been a lot better!If you need a thesaurus get a Roget's, and this is one of the best Roget's you can buy. Plus, the price is good.AD2

There are a lot of quaint reference guides out on the market today, but as a professional writer and teacher this is always the thesaurus I reach for. Not only are you provided with nearly half a million synonyms, but Rogets make the definition conise and meaningful.You will find this book an essential part of your reference section be it 2 books or 200 books in volume. It makes little difference if you are writing a term paper or a business letter, you are foolish not to have this vital tool.

Great tool for writing! It works a little different from other thesauruses but it is a very good system that does not only help you with synonyms but also with the correct connotation, so that you write exactly want you want to convey.

This "book" looked sketchy at first: it's not bound, no one else has reviewed it, and it came with a 1-2 day "processing" wait time from the seller.I gambled and bought it anyway I didn't want to pay $160+ and wait 1-2 weeks for processing for the "real book". I got it for OSU's eCampus CS 161 course and I'm happy I did. I much prefer paper books to ebooks, and it was significantly cheaper than buying the actual bound book version. It got to me in WA state 3 days after I ordered it, thanks to Prime shipping.You'll need to stick it in a 3-ring binder. I recommend a 2" binder with straight edge rings.This "book" (stack of papers, really) is printed on both sides and exactly 1.5" thick. It comes pre-punched and the individual pages are printed in color. Not a bad deal.

I thought I'd save some money and buy the Loose Leaf version. To get a 3 ring binder to fit the whole book (2") it cost about another $10. It was big, awkward and heavy. I decided to try 2" rings instead. I'm not sure how this will work, but it does feel a little easier to pick up. (It's still a heavy book - it weighs a little over 4 pounds.) It's cheaper, but the rings a bought from Staples were poor quality. One broke just trying to put it on the book and a couple others kept coming undone. I thought about getting a smaller binder and just taking out the chapter that we are on, but there are often times when you're on chapter 10 and you want to go back and look something up in chapter 2. I decided it would be better to keep the whole book together. It comes with the access codes, but I have not tried to use it yet.

I've used Gaddis' Java and now C++. I love his style of presentation. I'm just learning both languages so I like the consistency of his format, which gives an introduction and then an extended code which focuses on the subject that he introduced. I use the phrase "extended code" because I took a visual basic class using text by a different author. That author would give an introduction and then show the code out of context so it was hard to conceptualize what he was talking about or how to use the code. With Gaddis, the code is in a functioning. He would introduce the subject of the code. Utilize a program that uses the code and then break down the code to highlight the code of topic. His style felt "comprehensive".In addition to Gaddis' personal style of presentation, his text is part of the Pearson Higher Education publications. Pearson is student oriented so there are online tutorials (video notes) which offers a lot of student assistance. I recommend this text and Gaddis to any instructor or student learning programming.

I bought this as eBook version because, let's face it, if you're a commuter student who doesn't want to fight for parking, you don't want to lug this doorstopper around. You can safely assume that programming students have broadband or at least enough internet to be willing to download this book in the first place since it's available for some Kindle apps but not all.I have used Calibre to side-load it on my phone and on Paperwhite so it's not like this is impossible. Just green light it for your other apps so that way I can use XRAY please!Since I put it on my new Paperwhite I have actually begun to enjoy using it, it's great to just search for it. When I'm on a question I can usually just search a phrase form the question and I'll find it earlier in the text. I almost don't even read the book anymore, just look for the reviews and answer all the questions.So just put the caveat "Large File, might take a bit to download" on it and stop with this only available on some Kindle Apps garbage. It clearly works. And I can have all my C++ in pocket-size format which is nice.

Arrived quickly enough. The book was in pretty terrible shape, although I knew this ahead of time, and enjoyed a nice discount. Fortunately the previous owner only made it through the first 50 or so pages, so the highlighting and binding damage was brief.As far as content is concerned, this book provides fantastic examples of well written and documented code. It includes a lot of solutions to common programming problems and essential algorithms, instead of focusing only on c++ syntax, keywords, etc. Also, the programming challenges are fun and thought provoking.

The textbook is organized well and gives good examples of the code and how to use it. It explains the programming language well. I originally bought it for my Kindle so I wouldn't have to carry a large textbook around campus, but I found that referencing it was just difficult in the electronic media compared to a regular textbook. I actually ended up buying the regular textbook as well, and used it at home as a reference and just carried the Kindle to campus. The Kindle version is OK for reading chapters, when you're just reading through. But if you need to search it as a reference, or flip back to review another section, etc., it is very difficult to use. For my next class, I will just get the regular textbook and save the double cost. It would be nice if the electronic copy came with the regular textbook purchase, but I'm not going to pay for both again.

This is my third starting out book. I like all the books in the starting out series so far because the concepts are very well explained so that even a beginner can pick up the book and still understand most concepts. I've used starting out with Java, starting out with c++, and starting out with visual basic 2012, and I like all three books.

This book is one of the worst code teaching books I've ever read. It barely covers the subject matter, it tends to explain code like you already know everything about coding. Super dry with little to no explanations. Both my teachers who used this book often get confused, and have to stop class to help students or figure out what the book was trying to say

This book offers a clear introduction to REST and helps one understand and use the JAX-RS 2.0 API for building REST servers and REST clients.I used this book when I was learning REST and needed to write a REST client that talked to a REST server, which was implemented in a non-Java programming language. Even though the focus of my efforts did not match the book's focus, a focus on how to write a REST server in Java, the book helped me succeed by clearing explaining and giving examples of using the REST client API.

This is an excellent resource for Java developers interested in server-side ReST applications. Burke provides an excellent balance between the principles of ReST and the code samples to support them. Some Java programming experience is required, preferably some experience with the basics of Web Apps (Servlets and JSPs). Burke does not overload you with too many code variations that you can find online, but presents enough to make ReST fun and interesting. While more IT shops are moving to the API model and deploying ReST services instead of SOAP, and the popularity of Single Page Applications that consume ReST services grows, this is a 'must read' for developers who need to get on board with ReST now. Thanks so much to Bill Burke for making learning ReST so enjoyable!

An excellent update on an already excellent book. Features great coverage of the library and the hooks it provides for users to integrate with all steps of a RESTful request. The second edition includes good coverage of the new client library too.

Really well written, and (obviously) i'm quite pleased because I rarely give a book 5 stars. This book is really easy to follow, and written by an individual well versed in similar, foundation technologies. The author started in CORBA (also wrote that topic's original "bible"), now broadened views to this topic and wrote this gem. Possibly the next worthy of the nickname bible. Easy to follow, well described backing theory with a fairly simple, easy to follow example - which is smart and non exhaustive through the book. Elaborations on the example and backing theory come in right with the introduction of a new topic. Not overrun with multiple light and/or useless examples, and the code is quite easily found online when necessary. This may sound over the top, but this is possibly theoretical perfection as I'm a big fan of books that can explain and show at the same time. This author nailed it. Having purchased books in many topics, I wish they were all this clean.

Very disappointed with this text. Seems to start out in the right direction covering the fundamentals but early on the author seems to get sloppy and leaves out many steps that are requisite to implementing the examples described.

This is very well written with clear examples. I am using this as my guide to develop a REST service and it has given me all the information I need to complete that successfully.

I lived in Manhattan in the early 1980's and had a deep interest in all of the darker aspects of Times Square during those years. I often wondered about the many peep shows, porn parlors, etc and who was running them (and obviously raking in a bundle !). Ultimately I learned about Marty Hodas among others... (One of the sources was this old paperback: https://www.amazon.com/Times-Square-Bill-Sherman/dp/0553131168/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1538599152&sr=1-2Romala Hodas is an excellent writer and I couldn't put her book down. It is an awesome inside look into Hodas's porn empire and a most interesting family!

I loved the book because of the way Romola told her story. I was one of those Lawrence kids and I knew a bunch of the people. I'm waiting for the sequel. You did an amazing job on the book.

Romola Hodas’ father began his business career by servicing cigarette vending machines and juke boxes. He grew that into porn shorts and finally porn stores and other shady businesses.Romola discloses painful and tragic memories of her childhood. Her father was verbally abusive and his questionable business dealings affected the home life. Her mother was schizophrenic and bipolar. Romola is left to care for her siblings while trying to have a normal childhood. What results is openly described in this biography. She tells of the good and bad things that took place in her home and in her personal life.I enjoyed reading this biography. It was open and searing. The reader will be aghast at the violence and casual drug use and smile at Romola successes. It is clearly the memories of Romola and how she perceived events that took place in her life. Isn’t that all any of us have to give? I credit her for allowing perfect strangers to feel the sting of being called fat and the hurt of being screamed at and told she was the cause of the family’s problems.A good read. I can’t say it is a joy to read but it is important to see how Romola handled being in a family that is in the public eye negatively and the results of her father’s actions.I received an eBook ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This in no way affects my opinion or ratings of this book.

Let me preface with the fact that I am NOT much of a reader. If I am going to read, I prefer an auto-biography. This book was very well written and once I started it, I couldn't put it down. Thank you for sharing your story Romola, and Oh what a story ! For this non- reader to not only finish a book, but hope for the next one ... says alot.

About the Author

Robert Fordyce Aickman was born in 1914 in London. He was married to Edith Ray Gregorson from 1941 to 1957. In 1946 the couple, along with Tom and Angela Rolt, set up the Inland Waterways Association to preserve the canals of Britain. In 1951 Aickman, along with Elizabeth Jane Howard, published his first ghost stories entitled "We Are the Dark." Aickman went on to publish eleven more volumes of horror stories as well as two fantasy novels and two volumes of autobiography. He also edited the first eight volumes of "The Fontana Book of Great Ghost Stories." He died in February 1981.

I read this book when it was first published and fell under its bizarre influence. Did Aickman create a new genre with this collection? It might parallel magic realism, but it is distinct from it. Perhaps it is related to "The Metamorphosis," but no. Again, it has a flavor of its own.Aickman has this knack of making his reader feel uncomfortable in the most delicious way. He knows just what image to pop into your head. Not violent images. Not horrific images in the Lovecraftian vein. Images that disturb nevertheless. His stories wriggle back into your head over and over again. There's something going on in these tales, unspoken, potent and beyond understanding.

Since the Robert Aickman books are short-story collections, no single answer (to the above survey questions) is applicable to all stories. But in general, the excellence in writing completely supersedes any need for graphic violence or explicit sex to engage the reader. Certainly, these events are implied, from time to time. But the reader isn't told what's happening; the reader is lured into the depth of events by nibbling about all the edges, with such ravenous attention to each bite, that he finds he has completed the meal a heady morsel at a time, and is never full, but left always salivating for the next course.

As a lover of ghost stories, I took a chance on this book, in spite of certain suspicions, doubts, and misgivings. SUCKER!!! I don't know whether it was Aickman, or his publisher, who concocted the con-job of affixing catchy titles to his collections of drivel, and marketing them as some-kind-of-ghost-stories, but I have to admit that I fell for it. These stories are not even remotely scary, and they have absolutely nothing to do with ghosts. They also have no character development, plot, purpose, or rationale. They merely end (which is the best part) without reaching any conclusion. The only 'disturbing' or 'haunting' thought they leave me with is being annoyed with myself for wasting my time and money on them.The stories are worth only one star out of five, but I'm feeling merciful, so will give the book overall a two-star rating, only because Aickman CAN, when he wants to, string words together like a master craftsman. But a story teller, he is not.

Loved Aickman’s writing style. Not graphic splattergore horror, instead he is a slow burn story teller, dread constantly growing, restrained old school British, letting these “weird stories” play out in unexpected (and sometimes inconclusive) ways. An excellent introduction to Aickman, and I’ll read more of his books.

An odd writing style, almost mirroring Edwardian / Victorian horror. Occasionally Aickman does not clarify his ending or climax but you still come away with a spooked out feeling. A fun read for sure.

The thinnest of Faber's three recent collections of marvelous short stories by the undeservedly neglected horror writer Robert Aickman, COLD HAND IN MINE also shows his most obvious debts to Isak Dinesen, as another reviewer writes below. Dinesen's stories, at their best, very often refuse simple explanation exactly like Aickman's, and he seems to acknowledge his debt to her by means of the vaguely aristocratic characters and the Continental settings of two of the finest stories in this collection, "Niemandwasser" and "Pages from a Young Girl's Diary." Although this collection also has "The Swords," Aickman's allegory for the terrors of sexual coming-of-age, and "The Hospice," his nightmarish tale of being unable to get home (which might involve a hellish imagination of the state of being dead), it's not the place to begin with Aickman, and I would best recommend it for completists who have enjoyed his other two collection from Faber, THE WINE-DARK SEA and THE UNSETTLED DUST.

I doubt it is possible to characterize this, or any of Aiken's other books, except as " Strange Stories",But that is to damn them with faint praise. They are above all other things literate-- so, unlessYou are 1) over the age of 45 and 2) exceptionally well educated, you shouldn't even be permittedTo read them. If you are, (and of a certain turn of mind) what glories await you! Don't look forAny of your gratuitous sex/violence crap either-- (FIfty Shades of Grey, Quel merde!) There.That should be enough of a review for anybody. Now can I go?

A real page turner. This author knew how to build and draw out a frightening story line. These stories are spine tingling and disturbing. Good stuff.

I love that she includes Overeaters Anonymous as a resource. This is an underused resource!!! There are so many of us who struggle with food! And we need it to live!! Using food as fuel takes practice and planning. Fail to plan..... so true!!! Learning how to plan is key! I am so excited to have a step by step reminder of how to stay on track to be healthier!! As a nurse practitioner, I try very hard to walk out what I am asking of my patients! This is an excellent tool to help me do that and help my patients do the same!!!!

I attended a professional conference where Mimi Secor was a speaker and learned about her book. I was feeling inspired after hearing her speak about her own health transformation. I decided to buy this book (Kindle version). It was a very easy read and really helped inspire me to work on making some lifestyle changes to be healthier. I was not overweight when I started to make these changes, but was unhappy with the number on the scale, which continued to creep up. I wanted to be healthier! I started logging my food and getting exercise almost daily. I've been able to lose about 13 pounds and feel healthier and my mood is better thanks to the regular exercise. There is no better investment than your health.

I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to make a health/fitness transformation. I first met Mimi through social media via our shared coach Bonnie Switzer IFBB Pro. Mimi and I became instant friends and cheerleaders for one another. Being 55 and doing my first show at 52 after weight loss I can tell you that Debut A New You is honest, insightful and spot on. I feel Mimi made this book simple and easy and uncomplicated to understand and put into action; which in my opinion is how healthy eating and fitness should be. She provides truthful and hopeful aspirations that we all truly can change our health at any age. It is true, I never stepped into a gym until I was 50! I absolutely loved this book and encourage you to read it, you will be so happy you did.

This is a MUST read for those who wants to transform their life around and their health regardless of age. As a nurse and now a Family Nurse Practitioner, sometimes caring for others takes precedence over own health. This book truly inspires me. I love that it's never too late to chase your dreams or get healthier. I worked at a gym, and watched one lady compete in figure competition in her 50s. Yes, I'm sure it's harder because of other responsibilities, but it really comes down to how much do you want it? What's your why. Go get it!

Just when you think that you're too old to change, to improve your health, your body and self esteem - "Debut A New You Transforming Your Life At Any Age" comes out - wakes you up, opens your eyes to the reality that it's NEVER TOO LATE!! Great read - anyone, at any age, and everyone needs to read this book!!

A great easy read.I have overeaten for 60 years and I needed your book.I really appreciated the "Mindset" section.The "5 second rule" and "Sundowning and Losing Will Power" have been useful and easy concepts for me to understand, embrace and implement.Thanks for the insights!

I enjoyed Mimi sharing her journey and I could relate to her struggle during the process. It resonated with me. I really enjoyed this book and will reread it to stay motivated.
