About the Author

Walt Whitman May 31, 1819 – March 26, 1892 Walt Whitman was the first poet who sang The United States of America in verse for everyday citizens and lovers of his country. His words continue to excite every new reader who stumbles upon this grand collection of love and acceptance. Walt sings of the beauty of all mankind, the entire earth, and the entire universe.Walt received this letter of praise, written 17 days after publication: "I greet you at the beginning of a great career, which yet must have had a long foreground somewhere, for such a start. I rubbed my eyes a little, to see if this sunbeam were no illusion; but the solid sense of the book is a sober certainty. It has the best merits, namely, of fortifying and encouraging." Ralph Waldo EmersonJuly 21, 1855Concord, Massachussetts In the preface to this first edition of Leaves of Grass, Walt said that a poet would be “absorbed into the affections of his country as firmly as he has absorbed it.” After experiencing dismal sales the first year, he changed the sentence in the second edition to read: “The proof of a poet must be sternly deferred until he has been absorbed into the affections of his country.”

I am very happy that inexpensive versions of Leaves of Grass are available again. I have purchased eight different versions to compare. Many are very poorly put together - almost like scanned versions simply plopped into a word processor and uploaded to Amazon - and selling for $10 - $1. What I find most fascinating is this one - by Martino Fine Books (listed as Leaves of Grass ; {exact Facsimile of the 1855 Edition] - it is very fine, and is an exact facsimile. I love holding it and looking at it as close to the original 1855 edition as humanly possible. The only caveat is the cover - which features the older Walt, who had published six more versions by the time the cover photo was taken. No matter, the inside is what's important. Another one I bought that I recommend is from cholla needles press (listed as Leaves of Grass: 1855) - they use a facsimile of the original cover, and have made the choice to clean up the line breaks for readability purposes. The cholla edition is easy to sit down and read, the martino edition is beautiful to look at. The good news is I bought them both for less than $10 and find that reasonable enough to give them both to friends and relatives as gifts this year.

Kindle Buyer Beware! If you think you are buying the Library of America edition (which links to this Kindle version on the Amazon page) you are not. This is a completely different version. If you are looking, specifically, for the First Edition (1855) of Leaves of Grass - which is given prominence of place in the Library of America edition -- you will not find it here. As for the rest of the material, it may well be fine but it is NOT the Library of America -- a series renowned for its editorial care. It is, in fact, published by Heritage Illustrated Publishing from materials in the public domain. No essay by Justin Kaplan, no page numbers, and notably ugly typesetting. There are better Kindle general editions of Whitman's poetry for less (Bantam Classics, for instance). Amazon misleads its customers by putting this generic edition on the same page as the scholar-worthy Library version of which it claims to be a reproduction.

This review is only for the Wisehouse Classics edition. There are a number of typographical errors within the book. For instance, the word "of" is exchanged for the word "or" a number of times in "Song of Myself," altering the meaning of certain lines significantly. It's extremely unfortunate that Amazon has combined the reviews for so many different editions of this and other books. While they may sell more books, it makes it very difficult for customers to find a good edition to buy, and it makes me much less likely to buy from Amazon in the future.

I am torn on my reaction to Whitman's magnum opus-- its themes and words will remain unforgettable, but boy how I hated reading this plodding rambling slog of a book.Whitman's poems catalog his transcendentalism-inspired view of... everything. From scenes across the world, with particular focus on America, to anecdotes of dying soldiers and copulating couples, Whitman emphasizes the interconnectedness of humanity and nature. While Whitman's enthusiasm is infectious, he lacks brevity. He repeats his philosophy like a club over the head. The final product could've been cut in half and still have gotten across the message. But darn if there aren't moments of beauty. Particularly in the later poems which were added in his later years, Whitman tempers his enthusiasm with more brief, succinct, thoughtful, and hopeful words in the face of impending death. And I think that is the best occasion for Whitman's leaves: when one needs comfort that there is indestructible purpose and beauty in every human's life.

Except for school and college, classical poetry is dead. Poetry mutated into pop lyrics and is the teritory of the pop star or rapper. Nobel prize for literature goes to Bob Dylan, testifying to this metamorphosis. Reading classical poetry not for a credit or a paper is weird. Writing poetry review is even weirder. And writing a review of an indisputable genius, is much much weirder! In a way, reviewing Whitman is a bit like reviewing the Bible. What can one say about the American national icon? All that said, here it is...It is the first time that I read most of the Leaves Of Grass and not just the few chosen poems, or even just a few lines. And I must admit that I get rather tired reading very long poems, or poem cycles, so I do skip a few pages here and there. Moreover, the ever repeated paeans to America the Great or The States as a light unto nations strike to day as corny and pretentious. And lets not forget the language - antiquated, often odd syntax, words long out of circulation. And yet, counting everything in, FIVE STARS galore!!! What is amazing about Whitman is his tireless energy, zest for life, and above all, his inveterate optimism. This is a man born not long after the War of Independence and saw the terrible ravages of the Civil War (1.4 million dead out of 70 million population! WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam seem like games compared to that carnage), saw slavery, saw the Indian genocide, saw toil, hunger, sickness, and yet happily sung the glories of the Body Electric and heard America Singing. Whitman loved everybody - men, women, young, old, white, black, healthy, sick, good or evil, cities, bridges, plants, animals, stars. Some of his enthusiasm is way not PC in our present age - praising the soldier, the hunter, the butcher, the conquerer (ergo the rapist) of nature. In my opinion, Whitman is a giant and a giant he will remain in spite of the PC hordes.

This is the one to buy when you want everything Walt Whitman had published as "Leaves of Grass." So many versions -- including, I'm sorry to say, the expensive leather-clad "heirloom" editions -- leave out the homoerotic 'Calamus' book and so many other instances of sexuality that they emerge less than half the full page count.

There are 117 chapters that cover over 120 wild edible plant species. Some chapters cover more than one related species. The book contains 292 pages -- not counting the index and other appendix-type of material. The book is 9" high, 6.5" wide, and 3/4" thick. Each chapter typically contains 2 full pages describing the plant(s) with at least one photo of the plant. A few plants are given 3 pages. More rarely, just 1 page or 4 pages are provided. The single photos are typically very good. There are many instances where 2 or even 3 photos are provided. Nevertheless, there were many instances when I wished a photo would have been supplied to show close-up details of the leaf, flower, or other parts that were described in the text.I was surprised to see that the author was apparently unaware that milkweed flower buds can be eaten raw -- i.e. not cooked at all.The chapters are ordered alphabetically by the plant's common name. Each chapter consistently includes the following headings or sections:1. How to Identify. This covers an overall description of the plant, its leaves, its flowers, its roots/rhizomes, and its fruits/berries/seeds/nuts.2. Where and When to Gather. This covers the general type of environment or soil type where it can grow, but there is no map or list of the states where the plant is found. I guess "Northeast" is all we get.It also describes what season the edible parts are ready to harvest.3. How to Gather. This is not always obvious for some parts of some plants.4. How to Eat.This includes whether parts can be eaten raw and/or how to cook the edible parts.5. How to Preserve. While most edible plants can be eaten immediately, many may be refrigerated, frozen, or processed in some other way (canned, fruit leathers, jelly, etc.) so it can be eaten much later. The possible options are covered in this section.6. Future Harvest. This describes how to tell whether it should be left alone if it's scarce in an area, how to give it a chance to grow back next year, or whether it's an invasive species that should be gathered to reduce its impact upon native plants. Some chapters contain this extra section:7. Warning. For those wild plants that have parts or seasons when the part is not edible, is toxic when not prepared properly, or have look-alikes that are toxic, these chapters contain this extra section to help you avoid these problems.I liked this book.Although the photos aren't as large and as numerous as those provided in Samuel Thayer's books, Leda Meredith covers 3 times as many plants, so this book will definitely go into my backpack. Its pages are a bit thinner than Thayer's books so "Northeast Foraging" isn't quite so heavy. That said, the pages are more easily torn from frequent use. I tore the bottom of one page by holding it with one hand while reading it from cover to cover.

Outstanding purchase! I am not a survivalist however after purchasing books on edible mushrooms of the North East I thought this was a great next step. This book will made me see the world differently and I learned to appreciate the free culinary delicacies that can't be purchased at a grocery stores. I cannot believe how many perfectly edible (and tasty) things I have walked past without thinking twice. It is guaranteed that if you purchase this book you will say "I can't believe I could eat that after all this time". To clarify, the author includes wild edibles from "New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont as well as Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Rhode Island, and the provinces of Ontario and Quebec, Canada." Each item has description for How To Identify, Where To Gather, How To Gather, How To Eat, How To Preserve, Future Harvests and a Warning (if applicable, mushroom handbooks are full of them). Amazing color photos for each item and with 120 entries there are bound to be some things for the reader to try.

I've been a forager for years, and have tried out a bunch of guides. This is by far my favorite. It gives clear photos and descriptions of the plants, as well as listing their various uses. It's easy to use, and covers many of the common plants you'll be looking for. This is the book I'll be recommending to beginner foragers from now on.

LOVE THIS BOOK!!!Northeast Foraging is written like the author is teaching you in person. How to identify the plant, where, what parts, when & how to gather. Even how to eat & preserve, ending with writing about future harvestings. There are warnings when needed. The picture are beautiful but, could be better in the identification of some of the plants. Listing toxic look-a-likes would be VERY helpful but not included in this book. Overall I still love this book. FREE FOOD FOR ALL

Great book, my wife and I enjoy nibbling on things we used to just pull out as weeds. We're not looking to add to our diet but it is incredible how much around you is edible. Definitely worth the purchase if you don't have something like this. Information is displayed nicely, it certainly reads well but I doubt there is anything new in it if you have similar books in your library (They're not really discovering any new plants around here).

Unfortunately I cant read this for very long because I finally reached that age where I need reading glasses. From the little that I perused it seems very informative. It's reassuring to know that the author was educated by her great great grandmother. I tend to trust those who've learned one on one with an experienced elder. I love the fact that she regards the dandelion as the number one edible plant of choice if she were stranded. The world spends billions of dollars to eradicate them, yet they hold so many beneficial qualities. I did recognize some of the plants in the book, and I look forward to learning more when I get glasses. BTW this is not a handbook, nor is it lightweight.

I cannot give this book any higher rating, sadly not because of the author or the plot, but because of the atrocious translation job. "So tell me the truth, did you sleep with her?" "And where now, Madame Smarty Pants?" "Stop talking like a smart-ass." "Now, beat it. I've got a lot to do!" And that's just a smattering of the totally improbable phrases that you would EVER have heard in 17th century Germany. These completely modern phrases ruined the book for me. There should be more to being a good translator than simply translating the words. You should be required to understand the time period that you are translating.

I love that each of these stories in the series are stand alone novels. I have read the first and now the second book. The second (The Dark Monk) brought back glimpses of book one to inform the reader of previous information that was contained in The Hangman's Daughter. I can only assume that the others would do the same. I have grown attached to each of the main characters and feel as though I know them. The information provided at the end of the stories are excellent. The author provides us with a detailed journey into the Priest's Corner as well as information regarding the real people behind the characters. I look forward to following Simon, Magdalena, and Jakob Kuisl through many more adventures.

Move over Indiana Jones! You've got rivals from 17th century Germany - of all places!Second in the "Hangman's Daughter" quartet of caper-mysteries by Oscar Potzsch, "The Dark Monk" returns us to Schongau in Bavaria during a particularly snowy, cold January 1660. The situation is slightly improved from the conditions of thievery and dark doings two years earlier.Jacob Kuisl, the deceptively smart hangman of Schongau, his fetching daughter Magdalena and the clever young would-be doctor, Simon Fronweiser, are plying their trades while engaged in a colorful discovery of pharmacology.Sprinkled throughout is an entertaining and fun depiction of medical knowledge for that period: various herbs and plants, including the unwitting use of aspirin in the form of willow bark to relieve a mysterious illness killing many of the local citizens.But... hold on. There's a lot more going on when a local priest dies under suspicious circumstances literally pointing to an enigmatic hint on a coffin in a crypt. Oh, yeah! Before long a lot of people, Including the Kuisls, Simon, a mysterious merchant woman with seductive appeal to Simon (much to Magdalena's ire and jealousy), are chasing after the lost fabulous treasure of the Knights Templar.Complicating matters are bands of robbers, primarily displaced soldiers from the 30 Years War (1618 - 1648) that put an end to the Holy Roman Empire, are still lurking about and interrupting trade and travelers between towns along the snowy paths. But is it just these thieves? Before long, it appears that bishops, abbots and monks from various Jesuit and Franciscan orders are in hot pursuit. Ah, nothing like relics to warm the blood on a frosty night!Very entertaining are Brother Jakobus who knows how to show a girl a good time and Abbot Augustin Bonenmayr with a real edifice complex and a born promoter who's not afraid to set the world on fire. I'm not sure Spielberg could have outdone some of the antics and settings.Compared to the first book of the series (see my Amazon review for "The Hangman's Daughter" dated March 10, 2014 - "Twisty Tale of Bavarian Dark Deeds"), this one is more tightly written while preserving consistency with the setting, characters and conditions. Potzsch and co-author, Lee Chadeayne, seem more comfortable with the story and do a good job of shifting the narrative among the characters to keep up a fast and engaging pace. So, settle into a comfy armchair, pull up a blanket and take a journey back about 350 years when life was simpler...or was it?

Author Oliver Pötzsch returns to the massively successful, "Hangman's Daughter," series for a second entry in what has proven to be a solid collection of Historical Fiction novels. What "The Dark Monk" establishes early & often is what many potential readers may be concerned about: Whether or not this book can stand alone by itself or if it needs to be read only after you've gone through "Book 1/The Hangman's Daughter" - and the answer is, YOU CAN READ "THE DARK MONK" WITHOUT READING THE FORMER SERIES ENTRY AND STILL UNDERSTAND WHO EVERYONE IS AND WHAT THEIR CHARACTERS ARE LIKE ETC.However, I'd read "The Hangman's Daughter" no less than a few days before "The Dark Monk," (truth be told I will likely be starting Book 3/"The Beggar King" in no time), and so I was eager to dive right into the meat of the next story. Much to my liking, Pötzsch wastes no ink or pages on getting down to business. In the opening chapter we are at once placed back NOT FAR FROM the 1600's Bavarian setting that our beloved Schongau Hangman resides in. Within a few pages, we're already following the three protagonists established in the first book, (The Hangman's Daughter): Jakob Kuisl - The Schongau Hangman, Magdalena Kuisl - The Schongau Hangman's eponymous daughter, and Simon Fronwieser - Schongau's polarizing young new physician whom is also a hopeful suitor for the charming Magdalena Kuisl), all set out to solve the mystery behind an ever-expanding murder. One that is far from what it seems and will lead them - as the book's synopsis appropriately reveals - on a search for a treasure perhaps dating back to the Knights Templar.Filled to the brim with historically accurate references and fascinating insight into the lives of those inhabiting the period piece, "The Dark Monk," comes back stronger & more sinister than its opening novel, with a rabbit hole of conspiracies just waiting to pull you in until you've reached the final pages.Easy 4 out of 5 stars for a book that doesn't pretend to offer more than it can deliver, yet delivers just above your best-guesses & expectations. Enjoy.

Going Off the Grid: The How-To-Book of Simple Living and Happiness, by Gary Collins

Review

Going Off the Grid: The How-to Book of Simple Living and Happiness by Gary Collins, MS is an intelligent self-help book for those who are thinking about, in the process of, or even just curious about living comfortably and autonomously. As Collins begins he makes it clear that there are many different ways to define what living "off the grid" means, and that his experience, while comprehensive in its application, isn't a sole and singular perception. What Collins delivers is a virtual encyclopedia of all things off the grid, covering every conceivable prerequisite to development, cost, planning, consideration, and resources for turning the dream of living autonomously into a reality.Going into this book I was unsure of what to expect. This is partly due to my narrow understanding of what living off the grid meant (which, frankly, had been thus far limited to what I'd seen in "prepper" shows), and partly due to my only real foray into the wilderness being an Alaskan cruise taken last summer. Not exactly roughing it, I know. Going Off the Grid by Gary Collins changed all of that. His straight forward and natural narrative allowed me to see something that was not only attainable, but that also sounded really, really nice. If you have any interest in living autonomously at all, even if it isn't a full time existence, I believe this all-inclusive guidebook would be a gem of a manual to help in every step of the way. There is nothing that Collins doesn't cover and his experience can save you from the pitfalls and expense that are often the true cost of living simply. - Reviewed By Jamie Michele for Readers' FavoriteGoing Off The Grid is an incredibly informative book about a fascinating topic that is growing in popularity as well as notability. I confess that Going Off The Grid has to be one of the best books in the genre today thanks to its useful and practical knowledge as well as how entertaining of a read it is. You may be thinking "how can a book about living off the grid" be entertaining but trust me when I write that it is. Firstly the incredible author Gary Collins writes beautifully so that you are entertained from start to finish, but as well as this he shares his own experiences (sometimes in a humorous way) and shares stories about his journey to living off the grid and these sections of the book were incredibly entertaining and kept me turning the pages with haste. You may be thinking that Going Off The Grid is only going to be a useful book for those that want to live entirely off the grid; however, this is not the case. Instead, Going Off The Grid can be read and loved by many, even those that do not want to live off the grid as Gary Collins provides expert and sound advice on many topics that will relate to many readers. For example, there is a section on, and this is an incredibly useful chapter for those that are either developing their own home or work as a home developer as he provides comprehensive advice on what to do and what not to do. As well as this there is a chapter on alternative sources of power and this would be an excellent chapter for those that are looking for a cleaner source of energy and once again Collins makes sure to share the pros and cons of cleaner energy so that you can make the best decision on what is right for you.Above all, however, the book is great for all readers as the premise of the book is to help you reevaluate your life and current living situations, make you realize whether you need change and ultimately help you on a path to happier living which is pretty amazing in my opinion. - Reviewed By Red Headed Book Lover I try to be impartial and not recommend specific products but I would recommend this book for anybody wanting to know realistically the trials and tribulations of figuring out how to buy land, find good contractors, and build an off-grid conventional, with all standard utilities, house in the country. -Â Aur Beck Mother Earth News Book Review

This book has a few pieces of useful knowledge, so I won't go so far as to give it one star. With that being said, there are FAR better books to be had on the subject of living off-grid. This book is written from a rather cynical point of view. The author is so negative about everything, and most of his approaches aren't necessarily what most would even consider off-grid. Going the beaten path and paying others to do your work isn't normally why people choose an off-grid lifestyle, at least not in my experience as a homesteader of almost 8 years. The author makes the homesteading life seem so complicated and stressful, and he ignores the more eco-conscious approach in almost all situations, almost laughing at those who consider conservation the best option. This book was a tense read. I wouldn't have even finished it, but I hoped for a couple useful tidbits, which is all it did end up providing.

Like the book, lots of great information, however I got the kindle version and a LOT of words are missing at the ends of paragraphs so it left me guessing at what he meant at times. I'm sure it's just a glitch from making the book digital, but it's pretty significant. I would highly recommend going with the print version instead. If the digital version gets corrected I would modify my review to 5 stars.I have attached a screens hot to demonstrate, but most of the pages are like this. It does not make it impossible to understand, but you do have to work at it.

I am looking to buy land, build a house and retire in a rural area - somewhere in the Northwest like Montana. I have bought several books so I can hear different perspectives and make sure I cover all my bases before making the plunge. I am also hoping to reduce the chance of mistake or at least minimize mistakes - and costs related to those mistakes. This is my second book to read so far. I liked that the author covered most of my points of interest (off grid power, water wells, security, and communications - like cell phone and internet). The author also covered quite a bit of other things that were not on the forefront of my interests, but equally as important - such as dealing with general contractors and financing. One thing that I thought was great about the book was that the author provided examples of price ranges. Yes...we could all get everything we want if cost was not a factor. But it is good to understand what things may cost so we can determine affordability. For example, knowing how much power is generated from solar makes you start to realize that you may have to pick and choose what appliances and gadgets you will be able to run if you need to stay within a certain price range. Otherwise, you will do without until the sun comes back out!! HahaAll in all, it was a very good book, provided some great information, introduced some good resources, and gave a very good perspective of his research and experiences. I would recommend this book to anyone starting their journey to explore living off grid.UPDATE: Now that I have read another book, I would say this one was even better than I originally posted - if that could happen. Definitely stand by my positive review. Also, what differentiated this book from the other was this one actually provided different options with a little background on them. The other one only discussed what that family was doing and the author kept repeating that the reader should do research. I will probably be re-reading this book after I read my other books.

Not a bad book by any means, and it contains a reasonable amount of information for the price. I would have liked to see illustrations for the off grid power systems and building material.

Coming from a Military Intelligence background, I found the book to not only be a great read, but very credible with sound logic and tactics to reach a goal of living off the “Grid.” Don’t get me wrong, anyone with any background can follow the instructional “how to” chapters with ease and don’t need a special military background. The author has a warm writing style that makes for a fast, fun and formative read. Truly an outstanding book!

Even though I don't plan on going off grid there is a lot of usable info specifically for planning improvements to a homestead. I appreciate the authors candor in describing his trials while building his property.

Gary Collins did a great job of introducing several topics with basic and general overviews of each of those topics. Several times I was like...But now what! And in his Gary style, he address those questions with different resources and websites to gain more in site.

I enjoyed reading most of this book, and found it relatable having spent the last few months reevaluating how I want to live my life. The author does rant here and there, and the writing can be awfully casual -- but it didn't bother me too much. Still a good read if this is something you've considered for yourself.

Honestly? I'd rather eat a cactus than have to read this "look-at-how-much-better-and-smarter-I-am-than-everyone" bullcrap one more time. If someone who has won hundreds of dollars from writing competitions can barely understand your (grossly and obnoxiously verbose, not to mention creepy and pedophilic) book, then WHO ARE YOU WRITING IT FOR?????

After reading this, I'm not sure why Foucault has such a great reputation. Main problems: 1. Method seems to be adopted from Rousseau (Essay on Inequality) and Freud (Totem and Taboo) of coming up with ideas, then claiming historical support for them, even if it doesn't exist. 2. Treating abstract concepts as concrete objects. 3. Falling in love with the sound of his words until the meaning vanishes and it becomes word salad. 4. Using common words in special and, frequently, obscure ways. Granted, this is common in philosophy, but usually when it's done, the special use is openly defined.

As a graduate student in French culture I knew that Foucault was very, very important and now I can see why. Important in understanding another culture but also, I think, helpful in learning that there is another way to view sexuality other than through the eyes of America and what we've been taught.

Foucault primarily focuses on the development of the concept of sexuality as it took on new meanings from the 17th century into modern times. He develops the concept of power structures in society that not only control but influence and expand the outworking of sexuality.Foucault represents four distinct areas of concern developing in the 18th century (France?) as mechanisms for advancing power and knowledge of sex. These categories are; the hysterization of women’s bodies, pedagogization of children’s sex, psychiatrization of perverse pleasure, and socialization of procreative behavior. All these themes are developed and expanded in this work. His view point seems to be rather narrow and myopic from a historical basis. I was hoping for a more rounded approach to the subject.

The History of Sexuality, Volume !: An Introduction by Michel Foucault, is this major French thinker's last work, and since so many others have given a good sense of what the book is about, I will be brief. My only demur to their opinions is that while this may be his most popular book, it is not his best, or his most influential among scholars. It is very important to note that this is not a history of sex. It is not even a history of talking about sex. It is a history of the way in which talking about sex was structured over the last three hundred years, his primary thesis being that contrary to popular belief, the Victorian era, roughly between 1835 and 1903, was NOT a period where talk about sex was repressed. To be sure, Freud and the other psychoanalysts made major influences in how we talk about sexuality, but Freud was as much a milestone as it was a cause of the change. The book is devoted to two critical shifts in attitudes about sex. The first was from the onset of legislation about sex early in the industrial age, to the formation of sexual archetypes or "types of sexuality". The second major shift, which contributed to the first, was the simultaneous change in the value put on human life. This was brought about by agricultural advances which abolished famine in many countries, and the advance in medicine which showed that by attending to good practices, one can substantially improve and lengthen one's life. This trend was embraced by governments, which discovered the need for lots of people to keep the new industries running.Make no mistake. Foucault is difficult to read, but you have the assurance of those who have gone before that the journey is worth the effort. One nice perk of reading thie book is that you get a chance to read sn iportant contemporary thinker who is totally imbued with Nietzschean concepts. One can almost hear Nietzsche talking over Foucault's shoulder. Unforturnately, Foucault does not have Nietxaxhe's flair for writing sparkling prose.I will warn you that the editor of this translation would have done us a favor by providing footnotes to explain some of Foucault's references, such as the fact that "The Plumed Serpent" was written by D. H. Laurance and that Jean Martin Charcot was the founder of scientific neurology, and Sigmund Freud's teacher at the Paris Saltpetraire hospital. Keep your Wikipedia open to look this stuff up as you read.To soften the blow of Foucault's rather dense beginning, I suggest you read the last chapter first. It explains what it is that Foucault is all about.

A round of applause for all the students purchasing this book for class, especially you UChicago kids in sosc. RIP. Would recommend Sparknotes.

The history of Sexuality is a great piece of work from Foucault. It documents the history of sexuality and argues against the repression theory of sexuality. It demonstrates Foucault's pursuit of Truth and Power relations and even offers a few hints at action (Really more in The History of Sexuality II).

I have always enjoyed reading books about developing skills needed to survive in our world. This great book provides an overview of vital and practical information every young (or old) man can use to survive in our world. In fact, it lists 367 skills men should master. A very small sample of some of the tips in this comprehensive book includes the following: How to run a marathon, how to play poker, building a social network, how to buy a used car, how to throw a punch, what to do if you are being followed, how to behave in a restaurant, should you rent or buy, how to prepare for a job interview, how to get a good workout using dumbbells and hundreds of other great tips and advice. This 325 page book is organized into six sections. Section one titled Brand: Me, covers first impressions, dressing well and other related information. The second section, Necessities, deals with home economics, feathering your nest and car companion. The third section explains work issues such as getting a job, how to act on the job, the uniform and when business meets pleasure. Basic skills such as repairs, fix-ups, manly arts, games, gambling, eating out and other interesting tips are covered in section four. Section five provides information on the Birds and Bees issues like foreplay, getting serious and other factors. The final section, Trouble, explains what to do on the road, fisticuffs, handcuffs, lost and found. In conclusion, this is a book every father should probably give to his son to read. This book can also be used as an excellent reference source because it has an enormous amount of practical information.Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: The Samurai Heart: An old warrior's poetic tribute)

Gave this to my 15 year old grandson for Christman and he really like it. I think it has a lot of interesting suggestions for him as he becomes a man.

Item was received in excellent condition as advertised. Was mailed to me shortly after ordering. The manual has many useful tips andhints for men of all ages. Covers a wide range of everyday circumstances and how to handle them. I refer to it regularly and share it with my oldest son. Very happy with the manual. Would use this vendor again inthe future.

Great book for any guy. Face it not everybody has a father or brother to teach you some of these things. Even though I knew a lot of these things . I still learned a few new things that I have found very helpful. The book is not a sexist macho manifesto. The advice is very good and I believe a very good read for any guy.

I don't understand the negative reviews, this book is excellent, particularly for young gentleman. I learned plenty, and found it entertaining as well.Wish it had come out 40 years ago...They can graduate to John bridges later

I thought this would have more tips for the modern man (since men today don’t have the same skills of our grandfathers or even fathers). Most of this is common sense.

I got one for my son. Hope he uses it!

Purchased for my son's 21st birthday...he loved it!
