As is usual for this series, its a very good reference book, and also quite readable. I keep it with me when I'm traveling and working on XML related things, the size being a good tradeoff.

Perfect read for the subject

The book was in A+ condition, but the shipping was slow, no wonder though, since it was sendt to Norway from New Zealand. The book was thoroughly packed. The seller is highly recommended.The book itself seems to just what i was looking for, alot of references :)

I bought this guide because I needed a quick lookup for XML schema elements (something you'd think would be readily available online, but isn't - at least not in a usable form). The bulk of the book (70 of its 162 pages - about half) is dedicated to XSD, so I was very happy with what I got. The first 30 pages cover XML itself (all the nitpicking details like predefined entities, what characters are allowed in attribute names, etc). The next 17 pages cover DTD (which you may occasionally still need to know, even these days). The next 70 cover XML Schema, and the book finishes up with an additional 43 pages on Relax-NG and Schematron (two competing, and not very common, schema definition formats).I agree with other reviewers that the book would have been complete without the Relax-NG and Schematron coverage, but it would have just been 43 pages shorter if that was the case - there's really not much else they could have said about XML, DTD and XSD and still have been a concise "pocket reference". This book is actually pretty thick for an O'Reilly pocket reference - I have four other pocket guides on my bookshelf right now, and the other three have 120, 124 and 66 pages each. By that standard, I figure the coverage of Relax-NG and Schematron were just a "buy one get one free" type of add-on, especially since this book costs the same as all the other pocket reference books.This book is a perfect reference for somebody who needs a quick, handy reference to XML schema and the occasional XML rule.

The other review book I received yesterday was XML Pocket Reference (3rd Edition) by Simon St. Laurent and Michael Fitzgerald. Depending on what you're looking for, this may or may not the book for you...Contents: Introduction; XML Structures; Document Type Definitions; W3C XML Schema; RELAX NG; Schematron; XML Specifications; IndexAdmittedly, trying to cover "XML" in a single book is a daunting task. XML is made up of so many standards and technologies (XPath, XForms, XML Schema, etc.) that you either have to specialize your coverage area or be ready to publish a *really* heavy book. To their credit, the authors stripped out XSLT into it's own pocket guide. That act keeps this particular book small enough to fit in your pocket and that's good. But if you're wanting information on XSLT and think this might be your book, forget it.Next, the XML Structures and Document Type Definition chapters seemed to be a little confusing. There was something introduced that I had never heard of before... something called "Productions" followed by syntax that looked like regular expression language. Never having seen that term before in my XML reading, I went back to the introduction to see what the authors wanted to convey there. The only explanation was "As each structure is discussed, applicable productions from the XML 1.0 and 1.1 specs will be listed in the order in which they appear in the specs." So, I still really don't know what productions are, and I probably have to go to the specs to find that out. The description of each section in an XML document, like CDATA or declarations, was nice though.The book starts to become really useful when you get into the XML Schema section. There they go into each of the elements along with each attribute that can be used with the element. This is the type of reference information I'd expect to see in a pocket guide. Something I can turn to quickly as a refresher for what parameters or attributes I can use with an element, or to gain a quick understanding of an element I haven't seen before. This same structure is followed for the RELAX NG and Schematron schema languages, so the book will be helpful if you live in those worlds also.Basically, I found the XML Pocket Guide to be a little "hit and miss". If the title had been "XML Schema Pocket Guide", I'd have felt like the book was pretty on target. Trying to call it the XML Pocket Guide seems to infer there's a lot more in here than there actually is, and a buyer might get a copy and be highly disappointed in what it doesn't cover. If you're looking for schema info, you'll love the book. If that's a secondary reason for you to get the book, you might be disappointed.

My problem with this book is that I was hoping it would concentrate more on just XML Schema, something I think most people would prefer. Of course, how I am qualified to make that kind of statement is beyond me ;-) But here is my reasoning: A fairly large portion of the book covers DTDs, RELAX NG, and Schematron. DTDs, while ubiquitous, are being supplanted by XML Schema. Usage of RELAX NG and Schematron are, by the book's own admission, not widespread. So it seems that all three of these technologies could have been admitted, as were many other XML-related technologies (XSLT, XPath, etc.)In addition, I feel the regular-expression-like inclusions should have been omitted. These include something referred to as Productions in one part of the book and Contents in another. Maybe good for hard-core CS people, but pretty much useless for those of us who just want to work with XML Schema. An ideal replacement would have been some examples illustrating sample usage of various elements and attributes.All in all, the descriptions accompanying the elements and attributes are pretty good. Unfortunately, that accounts for only about one-third of the book. But it only costs $10 and it is small, so maybe it's worth it.

The majority of the new material in this book is on different schema specifications. Schema, Relax NG and Schematron are covered. A handy book to have around when you are hacking XML. The online free documentation is not as handy as the content as it's organized in this book.

This is a great book for learning About the History of the Church of the Brethern and how it came about from the Traditional Brethern Church. ie Dunkard Brethern. I highly recommend this book

Yes, this is a history book, but it's so much more than that. Don Fitzkee writes with a style that makes the bare facts INTERESTING. While all the pertinent facts are contained here in detail, this is written by one who is obviously a great storyteller.Since "oral tradition" plays such a huge part in the history of religion in America as well as the current climate of most congregations not only in the Church of the Brethren, but in all other denominations as well, this book is a jewel.Every member of the Church of the Brethren should read it for sure, but those of other faith traditions will find it interesting and learn a great deal from the author's ability to tell the tale in such a way as well!Part of the message here is: Aren't we swell for recognizing the error of our ways so soon? But more than that, it's about how we can hurt one another along the way if we are not very careful and considerate and PRAYERFUL. Fitzkee doesn't take sides, but simply and beautifully tells the story of what happened so that we can all learn and learn well.

This well-researched and well-written book was a pleasant surprise for me. I was raised in the Church of the Brethren, but left it over 40 years ago. Now in reading this, I'm understanding and appreciating my heritage. The story of the Brethren, and the enormous changes they made in 100 years...the struggle to remain separate from the "world", yet to witness to the world...the questions of dress; of biblical interpretations; of love feasts and baptisms and church architecture...are well discussed and very interesting. I imagine all denominations have had to struggle with similar questions. I think this book would be enjoyed by anyone who is interested in Protestant church history. It is a MUST for all Church of the Brethren members!

We bought this reading journal for my almost 10 year old. He is an avid reader and loves it! He enjoys the "extra" pages, which ask about your reading styles, favorite authors, etc. I also love the borrowing logs and "books I want to read" sections in the back.

I love journals like this and have looked at bunches of them. I own "Book Lust" as well, which is a nice reading journal, but I think that this one is superior to all of the others I've seen. As there is not, at this time, a "Look Inside" option for this book, I shall outline what you can expect from it. (You're welcome. ;) )Most pages include spaces to record the following:Title, Author, Date Published, Category (Fiction, Non-Fiction, etc.), Date Started, Date Finished, Rating (0-5 Stars), "Inspired me to learn about these subjects", all followed by a full page for "Notes".Some pages have, at the bottom, little quotes from famous authors about reading and books.Dotted along throughout the journal are places to fill in fun information. I was initially very excited about this reading journal. It seems like a very reasonable size and I love the hardcover binding a lot. The paper is thick and of very good quality. However, I dislike the fluff pages that show up every so often. These pages contain prompts about different book related topics like your favorite authors or books you would want to see made into a movie, etc.. I also dislike how few pages there are in total for logging books that have been read. I hoped that this would be something that would last for most of the year because I'm not reading near as much as I used to, but at 38 books logged for 2017, I'm already almost out of pages.If you read under 40 books a year, I think this journal would work well for you. If you read more, I don't think it is enough.

This journal was just alright. I bought this along with The Book Lover's Journal to gift one to my husband and keep one for myself. We browsed through both and we both wanted The Book Lover's Journal, since it has more detailed rating items that could be useful to record and less fluff between the pages. I'm returning my copy of the Reading Journal: For Book Lovers back to Amazon and getting a 2nd copy of The Book Lover's Journal for myself.

This is literally a book journal. It is a medium-size, hardback journal with a beautiful cover. Book journal pages include areas for title, author, date published, categories (fiction, nonfiction, memoir, biography, and other), date started, date finished, rating (it has five stars for shading in), a "inspired me to learn about these subjects", and notes area. Also the journal has a section at the end that includes pages listing Pulitzer Prize Winners (1948-Present ending with 2009 and blank lines for 2010-2013), "National Book Award for Fiction", "Faulkner Award for Fiction", "Hemingway Foundation/Pen Award", The Modern Library: 100 Best Novels", "BBC: Top 100 Reads", "Time Magazine: Top 100 Novels", "Oprah's Book Club Picks", etc. Great to keep on your bedside table or carrying around. I keep mine in my purse.

If you're a book blogger like I am, you know how important it is to make note of your thoughts and impressions as you read. Goodreads statuses are a fun way to do that and great for marking your page but I prefer something physical and tangible. Plus this journal comes stuffed full of bookish quotes, five minute reading related activities, a lending log for you to keep track of books you loan out or are lent, and so much more. Plus at the time I bought this it was only $6. Best $6 blog investment I've made yet. Such a good tool for bloggers, and even those who just want to keep track of their thoughts on books as they read.

Semi-retired so I am catching up on A LOT of reading. Wanted a simple book reading log/journal and this fits the bill. The entry pages are sufficient for my purpose, with plenty of room for notes (I want to keep notes on characters and plot). There is an abundance of 'extra' pages that are very interesting but I plan to use only about 10% of them. Again, my primary purpose was to log in books I've read this year.Pros: easy entry pages / hardcover / small sizeCons: no Table of Contents section / too many 'extras'

In the grand tradition of The Mullet, Bloomsbury USA's previous foray into the world of unfortunate coiffures, Innes-Smith and Webb celebrate poor hair choices, from shaggy Fab Four 'dos to feathered sides, and from asymmetrical bobs to intricately structured curls and waves. Missing are the comb-overs, the skullets (the bald-on-top, long-in-back look) and the synthetic rugs that also warrant the insult of the book's title, but since the photos are culled from hairdressers' windows, such an absence is understandable: these were styles people felt proud of! The pictures, which were taken over the last 30 years, are unfortunately not dated; still, one might venture to propose that the 70s were particularly unflattering for men, and that the 80s were a rough decade for women. This volume is briefly diverting, and even quite funny, but, as the jacket copy admits, there isn't much to be said about a group of pictures all designed to elicit a single response: "Wow, that's bad hair." Bad Hair...what possessed me to buy this book? What possesses me to do anything I do? Who knows? But I am glad I dropped some coin and took a chance.You know those pictures they have in salons and barbershops that display different hairstyles? Have you ever seen any that looked like they've been up for quite awhile in that the style has gone out of fashion maybe two or three times since it was posted? Well, James Innes-Smith and Henrietta Webb went scavenging in hair chop shops to collect the worst of the worst of these pictures and compiled them here. What was their inspiration? Maybe the same thing that got me to buy the book.Within the pages of this book, you will see some of the most awful hairstyles, mullets, mutton chops, bobs, beehives, sideburns gone wide, more mullets, perms that defy description, and so much more...the horror...the horror....It's a smallish, hardbound book, just a bit larger than a Reader's Digest, and the one thing I noticed right away was there is absolutely no text (I'm quick like that). Just pages and pages of really atrocious hairstyles. Once you start looking through this book, you will understand why there is no text...it's not needed. Each picture speaks volumes. About two thirds of the pictures are black and white, with the other third in color.A fun little book, this would go nicely on your coffee table, if you're weird like me. Also, if you were ever interested in being a member of the Doobie Brothers, at least now you know where to find an appropriate hairstyle. I hope the authors come out with another book entitled Bad Combovers...

What a brilliant idea for a book--a compendium of some of the more horrific hairstyles from the 1960s and 1970s, as taken from hair salon magazines and posters. Though there is practically no text accompanying the photographs, that's OK--this is definitely a case where a picture is worth 1,000 words (or 1,000 startled gasps!).I don't know why, but probably the first 3/4 of the book is men only--but the latter 1/4 of the book makes up for it with some of the weirdest, least flattering women's hairstyles you've ever seen in your life. You have to wonder if these poor women were drunk when they agreed to have these crimes committed on their heads. One of the more, um, interesting styles features a lovely model with gorgeous glossy hair--but the hair has been pulled forward to form a sort of chokehold collar around her neck, complete with Pop Art flower accessory. Then there are the woven helmets of hair--intricate braided and twisted creations that must have taken hours to put together but which are not flattering in the least.This would make a terrific gift for your favorite hairstylist, trendoid niece or nephew, or anyone who enjoys a good snicker. At this price, you can't beat it!

This is a great book. I own a barbershop and have placed it out for my customers. They love it. When you look through the book, it's hard to believe that people paid good money to have some of these haircuts put on their heads.

I was expecting great things from this little book since it was paired with Lileks' Gallery of Regrettable Food. However, the people who put it together forgot one crucial point: it's the commentary that make the Lileks book, and other like it, funny. Just showing pictures of old hairstyles with no copy added isn't very interesting. I can read The Gallery of Regrettable Food over and over and be amused every time. I doubt I'll ever open this one again. I give it three stars for a good try, but I hope next time the author puts forth a little more effort.

This book is one of my faves! The people appear so debonair and what a hoot! From mullets to the lady whose long hair is tied in a bow, there's page after page of ridiculous, BAD hair to laugh at!

Not quite as funny as I thought it'd be.

Book is so cheaply constructed, it looked like a cute idea, but is a tiny book and poorly executed.

Pee-in-your-pants ridiculous.
