I am prejudiced because I served on the editorial committee and wrote essays on the some of the 100 best.Great photography and more than you every imagined you could learn about Chicago architecture and design. Will give you a new appreciation for the monuments large and small that make up Chicago. See the companion exhibition while it runs at the Chicago History Museum.

Excellent take on Art Deco design and architecture in Chicago and Chicago’s influence on the style. The essays were informative, entertaining, and written by individuals with real academic chops. I was delighted to see that the Twinkie is an Art Deco design!

In addition to the great architecture, this big book offers an added treat in the form of discussion of key objects of design. The photos are spectacular, my only reservation is that too many bleed across two pages, obscuring the symmetry of the object. But one can always look for other photos on the Internet. I wish that I had had this book for my modern architecture classes. In terms of US architecture, as a New Yorker I concede that Chicago reigns supreme.

Not bad and great for first timers going out on their own and need to learn to cook. You "get what you pay for" as far as quality and taste from these recipes.

I'm a single guy. I love to eat. I hate to cook. These recipes are (for the most part) easy, tasty and only require a few ingredients. For the most part all of the ingredients are readily available. Not sure what "Caponata" (canned "eggplant appetizer") is or where I'd get it, but the rest of the ingredients should be in any reasonably well stocked grocery store. For lazy, hungry, single folks this one is a keeper!

I bought this book for my son who is 19 and is always walking in the house and asking what is there to eat and if there is nothing immediately there, he'll run off to McDonalds or gripe about starving. I told him one day, "son, you have to figure out at least 5 or 6 things you can cook so you can be independent one day". I found this book on Amazon and bought it at first as kind of a joke of our conversation. I gave it to him for Christmas and he actually loved it! He's made 2 or 3 things already and they are very good! I love this book, because men are very visual and don't want to read instructions. It has pictures of exactly what you need and the steps to cook it are simple and straight forward. If you have a bachelor or young man in your life that needs some nudging to learn some sort of cooking on their own, this is a good book to give them. It would be a GREAT book to give to any college student, not just males, because most everything is very affordable, and the best thing, all is needed is a microwave.

If you are really in a hurry and a man a can a plan is just too time consuming for the moment then do like the series did and take to the microwave. Get things done even faster and in a pinch. Great last minute minimalist meal saver.

I have 8 sons. I discovered these book back in 2006. And have given them to all the bachelors in the family. There awesome. Love the picture book style and indestructible book it’s self. A survival must I think.

Engbrecht's obvious experience, credentials, and insight notwithstanding, this book offers an objective view of the PMC world, whether it is what the reader wants to hear or not. The actual accounts, both the author's and those of people he actually has worked with, bled with, and knows personally, from both sides of the coin are, in my mind, relevant, accurate and sobering. It's not a romance novel and it sugar-coats nothing; just what ought to be expected from such an unforgiving profession operating in austere environments.This isn't a business for everyone, and the author makes clear the pros, cons, and harsh realities of the life of private contractors. In not only speaking to the insider, America's Covert Warriors reveals the not-so-pretty underbelly of an industry that has its genesis in integrity, but has unfortunately been corrupted along the way. The resurgence of the PMC world and the re-building of its reputation start with legitimate perspective and forthright discussion, both of which I found here. Whether you're interested in entering this field or just plain curious, this book, in my mind, is a spot-on depiction of what to expect and what went down in an environment of not-so-clear-cut objectives and perhaps dubious intentions.Much as the world pf private military contracting is not for everyone, this book is not here to appease all opinions. Of the negative reviews I am curious how many have ever walked in Engbrecht's shoes.An excellent read.

The author is very knowledgeable and experienced. I enjoyed the stories shared and it served to put things into perspective. I totally appreciated the open and honest expression of personal and professional opinion speaking the truths that many are afraid to bring up. This book was very insightful and enlightening on a topic that remains yet very obscure. I definitely recommend it to the serious reader, very thought provoking and mentally stimulating.

excellent book if you are interested in the connections between civilian and military operators

Enjoyed Shawn's stories about his time working as a private contractor.

Where to start as there are so many great parts to this book. I highly recommend this book to anyone that is interested about Private Military Contracting. The first thing with America's Covert Warriors, it is neither left wing or right wing. As you find with most Military books they are either one or the other. The book hits all aspects from history, personal stories from contractors, and also the authors solution benefiting everyone for the future of private military contracting. The greatest thing to me, the book is not hearsay or written from a political, or journalist stand. It is written and also has input from past and current operators from all parts of the world. I have learned so much from this book with the history of how private military contracting was started, where it has gone, currently at and what the future holds/can hold.I could not get enough of this book and read it every chance I got, I am sure I will read it over a few more times as well. Every chapter has something different and so much to offer. Some books say the same thing over but in different ways, but not this book. The best thing is the book gets even better as you go. As I said to anyone interested in learning about PMC, if you are politically interested, have family that is involved or looking to yourself. You MUST read this book as the info it provides is priceless. Thank you Shawn for writing such a great book and I look forward to reading more of your work.

If you are into private military compnaies over in iraq then this book is a must read.very good read and recommened

This book is like the movie "Crash" that won so many awards. Hard to explain but worth the trip to the bookstore. It's not really a memoir but is full of highly readable accounts of life and death in Iraq. It's not really a history book but does a better job of bringing history to life and making it relevant than most history books. The writer reminds me of David Hackworth, another of my favorites. The author's suggestions are valid and seem more intelligent than most of the stuff coming out of Washington DC. I really enjoyed it and would endorse it to others.

This book give you an opportunity to understand the complexity and the evolution or modern wars, with the apparition of PMC on the battlefield. The author describe the situation in a very objective way. He will explain the consequences of this change on the ground and the reality for those whom are operating on the ground and risk there life. There is few black and white situation working overseas, most of them are grey. I read few books on the subject, and by far this is the best one. The writing, the format and the story it is fluid... For those who like questionning... and dont take no as an answer... Bravo!

If you sincerely like authentic Chinese cooking, this is the book you need to own, this one and Ms. Tropp's subsequent book. I ate in her restaurant in San Francisco several years ago, the event being a funeral celebration for a family member. Ms. Tropp was very gracious and kind and her food was absolutely out of this world. I worked in China for several years and was fortunate enough to have learned a few techniques so when reading this book, it brought back fond memories and a few forgotten skills as well. It is a very good read, simple and succinct, and in addition to describing the different herbs and spices and kitchen equipment you might find useful, you will also get a little taste of Chinese culture. Ms. Tropp passed on several years ago which was very sad for me but her legacy lives on in this, her first book, and her subsequent book, China Moon. Being fond of Chinese cooking myself, I'm sure other readers who are enthusiastic about this particular cuisine will find Ms. Tropp's book educational, somewhat entertaining, and very authoritive on the subject. Enjoy.

There's no out trumping Barbara Tropp. She had a particular genus for food which developed into her becoming a true authority on Chinese fusion cuisine. As a born teacher she pays attention to details that many overlook. While innovative, her framework and structure is the traditional Taiwanese approach she learnt while living and studying there. This is one of the best books to learn Chinese cooking skills from.

Awesome and genuine recipes. Not fusion cuisine. Followed her recommendations for seasonings and supplies (ordered and waited for the good stuff) and now my family understands why I have refused to eat the garbage at the local 'Chinese' restaurant. Will make converts out of non believers. First taste was a sight to be seen.

This book has transformed the way I eat dumplings. Extensive tidbits of personal preferences, stories, myths and taboos to enlighten the palate beyond just the food. Each recipe is explained extremely well, step-by-step. Further, her anecdotes about living in Taiwan are interesting and help fuel your personal cooking.To fully appreciate the meals of this books, reading the first few chapters on equipment are invaluable! Her cleaver section is dynamite! I left the purchasing of a variety of cleavers to her, and just bought the one general cleaver she recommended! What a change it has made in my kitchen! Following her techniques and recommended equipment has made my Chinese cooking from an all day affair to a short, well orchestrated event.5-stars because of the personal insight for each section and each recipe; excellent writing and editing; superb recipes (oh, the pork hunan dumplings are divine-especially when made into pot-stickers); easy to follow illustrations that are not complex or childish; and most of all-PRICE! Excellent value for the money!

lots of info here - overall, offers the most in terms of learning about basic Chinese cooking equipment, ingredients, recipes, food philosophy, etc. i.e. if you're only getting one Chinese cookbook this is the one (better than books by grace young, ken hom, or martin yan). If you're getting more than one, then these other authors have good info and can be inspirational as well.

I think this a super book. However, it is definitely not a good introduction for the novice. The recipe instructions are about the clearest and (by far) the most detailed of any I have come across but the whole book has obviously been written with on assumption that the reader has a good bit of experience in the kitchen. There are no photographs in this book and, while I normally subtract stars from my ratings on that basis, the deficiency does not count for much here. What really makes this book so good is the detailed discussion about techniques and the history of certain dishes. There is a lot of interesting stuff in here and this book is definitely a gem in my collection. In particular, I was very interested to read what this author had to say about 'fish-flavor' dishes at page 195. I don't recall ever seeing this explanation of how the name arose in any other book (and I am not sure I am convinced) but I think it is this sort of thing that will make the book appeal to all serious 'foodies'. I also should add that I was pleased to see each recipe name and section heading rendered in Chinese characters (although the translations are not always direct). A great purchase all things considered.

Much more than just recipes. Fantastic guide to choosing and using tools of the trade. Make your own specialty spices etc. etc...If you really get into your endeavors and want some depth this is for you.For you bachelors out there, if you want to really knock a girl's sox off, impress the heck out of her by asking her over for a chinese dinner you've prepared. Be sure she gets there in time to watch your technique.

There are lots of translations of Machiavelli's The Prince out there, both in in print and online. I first came across this one in graduate school. After having read it several times since being introduced to it as an undergraduate in different forms (in anthologies, in the Portable Machiavelli, etc.), this happens to be the most accessible one. Its introduction is fairly detailed, so new readers to Political Theory may find it overwhelming, but for those who have some background it presents intriguing ideas.

The first name we tend to think about books about doing things with computers is O'Reilly and Associates and their popular In A Nutshell, Learning, Programing, and Hacks series of books.The Hacks series is supposed to be more or less about things you can do using a programming language, software product, or hardware.Sadly, Windows XP Hacks does not live up to that standard. The only major hack that still seems relevant in this book is using the TweakUI program. Since Microsoft has discontinued it's Microsoft XP Plus! package, several of the examples could no longer be done. A real bummer considering my Netbook runs XP.Vista and 7 users will find no use for this book. (As if Vista or 7 have any real use to start with in a world where XP is still king.)Examples for how to do stuff with Microsoft Outlook and Internet Explorer make the book misleading. This book should be about Windows XP not Microsoft Outlook, Explorer or Office. (Put that in a separate book. (Oops! I forgot, they already are! See Word Hacks and Excel Hacks. (I highly recommend Excel Hacks if you want to learn some of the more finer points of Excel, but that's for another review.)))I am glad that the Second Edition made a couple of mentions of Firefox, but Firefox was new software at that time and Firefox Hacks didn't come out until after this book. So really this book was written for Windows users circa 2004 rather than 2010. (Generally, when an O'Reilly title is released, it has a shelf life of about 5 to 7 years before it is time for a new revised edition is published.)Even though Vista and 7 are now on the market, the author should really go back and write something for the Netbook users who buy a Netbook with Windows XP SP3.There are better books out there than this one. Hacking Windows XP by Steve Sinchack is one of them. (That one had been around since 2004 when SP2 just came out and still has relevance for SP3.) I would suggest buying that over this book.This is one O'Reilly that should probably be avoided.

This book would be great for somebody that just wants too learn about windows xp. I only gave it four stars because it is outdated. I would recomend this book if you are planning on using or are using win xp. It will help you get the most of it, but be carefull some of the info is only good for sp1 not sp2 or 3, and you could cause problems. Just as you always should set a restore point before doing anything and you should be just fine, enjoy.

Some books about XP only tell a reader things he has probably figured out on his own, but this book will actually take you to the registry to fix problems. For this reason it is worth a good review. I only wish that the registry introduction were a tad more step by step.

This is a great book for someone like myself who doesn't need a intro level book explaining how to open folders and send E-mail but is not an XP expert. The chapters on editing the registry and debugging local networks are worth the price of the book.
