I live in West Africa and this book is superb. Lewis explains things in a clear and cogent way. His treatment of different concepts of time is particularly useful. He talks about some cultures as being multitasking and that is certainly what West Africans are. His description has helped me with the frustrations I experience as a linear-time American dealing with multitasking Africans.Nice work, Mr. Lewis! Thank you!

"When Cultures Collide: Leading Across Cultures" by Richard D. Lewis is a fascinating study of people from 90 countries across 10 groups of cultures from all over the World. His meticulous study relates to: A. Different Countries in Different Worlds; B. Managing and Leading Different Cultures and C, Getting to Know Each Other. In this section he takes us through the 10 different cultural groups spreading from North to South and East to West.Having visited or worked in 31 of the 94 countries, over the last three decades, in my business career, I can relate totally with what Richard Lewis writes about. The details given in the book are startlingly real. In each country we read about their history. The cultures and values are given their due respect. Concepts of Leadership and Status are described to readers, so that one understands how important these are to achieve a successful business relationship. This continues into sections on Cultural Factors in Communication that are a true benchmark for anyone who is learning on how and what to do in such complex environments.The importance of understanding the basis cultures and values in countries where, say Europeans, have either migrated some years back or gone there to take up a position, is addressed with knowledge and understanding. In my experience working in African, Asian and Latin American countries, one cannot overemphasize the importance of what Richard Lewis writes about.

Very interesting approach for those of us who work in multiple countries. Provides a more detailed view than "Kiss, Bow, or Shake Hands" on the differences in each country. Should be used as a parallel approach to Gerte Hofstede's cultural dimensions to understanding worldwide cultural differences.This edition is 2006 and is becoming a little outdated. Cultures are changing around the world and some of the statements in the book are not as accurate as they were 10 years ago.

Great read for a regular Joe; overall an easy read and entertaining. A lot of observations about other cultures are worded in the simplest way, full of those "Ah ha..." moments.An even a better read for those who are in contact (or expecting contact) with people of different culture backgrounds; how to conduct business, what to expect, to avoid, and most importantly to do.Would highly recommend.

When Cultures Collide is a handy cross-cultural reference book to have when you are required to adapt interpersonally in order to get things done with others from around the globe. I've been fortunate to travel around the world and LIVE (not just visit) on four continents. A cursory review of Lewis' written observations of those cultures 8've interactex with proved insightful. I've not yet worked out how to read the Communication Pattern diagrams, though, which was a key feature of why I bought the book. It would have proved helpful if Lewis provided an up front, user friendly explanation of how these "work."

Awesome pics in side this that range from "I can color this in twenty mins" to "this is going to take me a week." Some really funny images of Harley trying to race the Flash with a cheetah powered chariot and a rocket jet pack. My only complaint, which is on me for not thinking of it, is that Harley is white. I don't mean Caucasian, I mean the combination of all colors together making white light white. So, as you can see from the cover image, you don't really color Harley's skin much. I probably would avoid this for kids, there are some pretty risque images. Nothing too lurid, but it's Harley Quinn. She's not exactly appropriate for kids. There is not a lot of the Bruce Timm cartoon versions of her in this book.

I love my Harley Quinn coloring book! It has lots of pictures directly from the Harley Quinn comic books and lots of different versions of her. It has roller derby, different outfits, bombshell, suicide squad outfit. The only problem I had was on the back somehow it got ripped through the last twenty some pages. So thats frustrating but it's a small rip.

love this adult coloring book. any fan of harley quinn and/or the suicide squad will love this. mind you it's comic book scenes so don't expect stuff from the film in it. although it has images from comics released as late as september 2016. very new product

Daughter saw this inside Universal Island of Adventure for $20. Not wanting to carry it around was the original intent but buying it for less was just a bonus.She loves it, illustrations are very detailed and cool as she said.

I love this! I am a huge Harley fan and this is great. I like that it has all different stories in and parts in it.

I LOVE all the variety with the characters drawn and the various artists and styles in the book.Some illustrations are very simple and easier to color, yet others can be full of detail and a bit more challenging to color.

I first heard about this book when I read the following review on about.com:http: // visualbasic . about.com / od / vbbooks / fr / Br9780735661707.htmIt piqued my interest, despite my being retired, and having known for some years that I would never be interested in becoming manager of software projects -- definitely moot at this point! Many years ago, I dipped my little piggies into project leadership (not even real management!),and have remained emotionally scarred ever since.When I started reading this book, my initial reaction was that the author was a self-centered, opinionated, arrogant jerk with way too much self-confidence. But then he's a relatively senior manager at Microsoft -- that's probably par for the course: he wouldn't be where he is if he wasn't capable nor full of confidence! His prose is, er, entertaining, and doesn't pull any punches -- intentionally so; he does it for effect, and to get a reaction (these were articles originally written for an internal publication at Microsoft). It took a while for me to get over this, and start listening to him (while gritting my teeth).I didn't find the first few chapters terribly absorbing, but I stuck with it, and gradually things started to get more interesting, until -- around Chapter 5 -- I found material I could really relate to.It was interesting to read in this book so many of the tenets that should have been followed at one of my former employers (a very large software company), but weren't. This book suggests very strongly that Microsoft has a much better handle than my former employer (a Microsoft competitor) had on how to develop software. Of course, I take with a giant pinch of salt how true the Microsoft characterization really is, from a very pro-Microsoft author. He talks in highly glowing terms about how Microsoft is the best company in the world, and such. However, he hits on so many points that I saw first-hand were weak points at my former employer. While things have probably changed there since I left, I suspect that they are still very undisciplined -- cowboys, to use the author's terminology.The book can be viewed at a number of levels:1) An insight into what happens inside Microsoft software development. Specific, but still interesting to anyone in the software industry.2) A "How To" book on managing teams of software developers -- the description is very Microsoft-specific, referring to terminology and tools used there, but pulling back a little, the advice could easily be used very profitably in other environments.3) A "How To" book for individual contributors on how to think and act in order to make the appropriate choices in career development, in Microsoft or any other reasonably well-informed software development organization. Also, to find out how enlightened (or otherwise) your current employer might be.It is well worth reading, if you are a software engineer/developer, a software designer/architect, or software development manager, or plan to be in any of these roles. It describes so many of the things you will have to deal with in any software development organization, not only in Microsoft. In fact, if you pull back a little bit further, much of the sage advice given is applicable to lots of different organizations, even outside of software development.Some points:The author is continually emphasizing -- quite correctly -- how it's critical for the software engineers and managers, et. al. to ensure that the customer has a delightful experience (the currently fashionable expression). That does not jibe with my experience of Microsoft products, which continue to annoy the heck out of me, from operating systems (Windows) which require me to continually update them to keep them working properly to the point where I spend more time doing that than real work, to installable products that have a less than "delightful" install experience.Towards the end of the book, the author compares Microsoft with Google and Apple, and predicts that Microsoft will beat them over time with continually improved products. Well, Apple is now a truly dominant player in the computer market, having been extremely successful designing and marketing its iPhone, iPod, iPad, and its various Mac computers. It is very clear that they have been far more successful with "delighting" customers than has Microsoft. His take on Google is also that it will fail w.r.t. Microsoft, but his arguments didn't convince me, and seemed to be overly Microsoft-centric. Things have moved on since the book was written, and I suspect his conclusions haven't born out. How they will continue is anyone's guess.Not an easy read, but recommended!==== Update, March 6, 2012 =====It just happened that the very next book I read after this one was Steven Johnson's "Where Good Ideas Come From: The Natural History of Innovation" Where Good Ideas Come From: The Natural History of Innovation. I was immediately struck by the difference in approach towards (and definition of) Innovation between Johnson's book and this one. I think that Eric Brechner would do well to read Johnson's book, to see the difference in approach to "Innovation" at Microsoft (at least what he describes), and that of Johnson's approach. Rather than elucidate this in more detail, I leave it to the reader (and Mr. Brechner) to do the necessary reading. Johnson's book gives a far more convincing argument for innovation at Google and Apple than does Mr. Brechner at Microsoft.

Eric Bechner's I. M Wright's "Hard Code:" A Decade of Hard Learned Lessons from Microsft is one of the three books that I read over my vacation. In the interest of full discloser this review is written for O'Reilly's Blogger Review program and this is a only a striaght review of the text; I will be looking at some of the ideas in the book in greater detail in later posts.Overall the book is great and is applicable to pretty much any software developer of any level and I especially feel that the book should be read by students who are interested in working in a large software development firm or the IT department of a large corporation.However, readers of the text should approach it with the understanding that they are not reading this text to learn how to develop software, but rather to learn how to navigate in the software development industry; i.e. you will not read anything about the intricasies of .NET, C#, or C++ in this book, but you will learn how to effectively interface with managers and co-workers.There are parts of the book of course that are very particular to Microsoft, but these sections are few and far between and still provide an interesting read and many of the lessons from the Redmond specific chapters can be applied to many other large organizations. This is a must read for anyone interested in advancing their software development career in a corporate environment or if you are just interested in seeing how software development works in large companies.

The first few chapters were a bit slow, but the content is solid and progression seemed natural. By chapter 8 the content kept me engaged and turning to the next page. I had learned must of the content before chapter 14 from cutting my teeth on broken systems. I recall replacing a 9600 baud modem with a 56k baud modem and finding that the clock ran slow if the modem was set to use more than 36k baud--tracked the problem to a 3rd parties ISR. I really appreciate the state charts for objects like the semaphores and queues. The chapters on modularizing (14) and synchronization (15) were very valuable for me, and breaking down the communication using design patterns is much appreciated.

I just recently started my career in Embedded Software and decided to pick up a few books. I've gone through chapters 1-5 thus far with great interest and am really enjoying the structured, beginner-like quality it entails. We use VxWorks at work and although most of our application and kernel tasking has been implemented it still is an awesome read!

not really a practical book. doesn't provide any hands-on coding experience but just explains theories.

The explanations and descriptions seem simple, but I think that's only because they ARE well done.This book can be equally useful for both novice and intermediate programmers. Experts in RTOS's may want something a little less instructive and more like a "reference" manual, but don't be fooled by that statement and over-estimate your skills. If you can't completely describe semiphore types, deadlock breaking strategies and timing wheels, you may still need this book.

I bought the book due to my class but it is a great read and a great source of information!

I bought this for review before going on job interviews. For me it was perfect. I had taken a course in OS college and have been working on embedded systems for 13 years. You kind of keep some of this for granted if you are not directly in charge of maintaining the OS. As the name says it only gives concepts so it doesn't go into any great detail about a particular OS. The book has 15 pages on semaphores (15 pages sounds like a lot, but the text is not dense ). You are not going to be an expert on semaphores but you will get the basic "concepts" of them.

The book walks you through all the steps of embedded systems development before going into the details of RTOS, which is the main focus of the book. It is a great book for the intended readers of the book, as stated up front in the book.

This is a thin book for the price. Had it cost $10 less, I would have given it five stars. If they had said $10 of the price goes to Popcorn's widow, well, then I wouldn't be as put off by the price. Nonetheless, it is a nice story about working with Popcorn Sutton. I believe the authors genuinely liked their interaction with Popcorn. It was a nice read.

This beautifully illustrated, fully descriptive cookbook is a "must have" for serious stir-fry enthusiasts, both beginners and experienced wok users. At first glance, some (ok, many) of the recipes look a bit challenging, for there is much description in the cooking instructions. But a closer read reveals that these descriptions offer almost fool-proof aid to beginning and intermediate wok users and inevitably helps me avoid cooking mistakes. I'll bet experienced users will appreciate this information, as well. I'm a bachelor, and retired. I can't afford to eat out as much as I did when working, so I do most of may own cooking. For a change every now and then I use a WOK. This WOK Cookbook has some very good recipes in it, and easy for me, the old bachelor, to follow.

Full of information, recipes that range from easy to complicated, and lots and lots of pictures. We are learning to use our new wok and this book is making it an exciting and delicious adventure.

This book really teaches the fundamentals of using a wok in various methods, how to season and maintain it as well. Worth the price.

There are beautiful pictures for every recipe and the recipes are very unique, interesting, and delicious. Several recipes will suggest ingredients that may be difficult or expensive to find but the recipes can also be simplified. My husband loves to cook and looooves this entire series of cookbooks. This cookbook will help any chef tap into their creativity and explore their passion for cooking and take it to a new level.
