Two of my favorite women in early British history are Empress Matilda, Henry I only surviving legitimate child and heir the the throne of England and Eleanor of Aquatine, Queen to two Kings as well as mother to two kings. This book is mainly about Matilda and I enjoyed reading it. She had a fascinating life because even though she was the daughter of Henry I, she was treated as property, a brood made that Henry married to Emperor Heinrich of the Holy Roman Empire. Reading about their marriage and how Empress Matilda was treated by her father after Emperor Heinrich passed away is unreal. Empress Matilda helped her husband rule their empire yet her father and the Norman Barons only saw her as a woman.I highly recommend this book. And I look forward to reading the six books before this book.However, I was disappointed that there was not a lot about the time period between "King" Stephen stealing the throne and the war with Empress and true Queen of England Matilda and Stephen naming Matilda's son Henry as his heir. That, in my opinion, is the most interesting time as it is also the beginning of the Plantagenet Dynasty.A great follow up book would be Eleanor of Aquatine but unfortunately that hasn't happened. Yet!I was provided a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review.
I loved this book! It was informative, well written, and I learned much that I had never known about Matilda of England, daughter of Henry I Plantagenet, King of England, and the granddaughter of Malcolm III Canmore, King of Scots. It isn't overly long and is actually easy to read. One doesn't get bogged down in a lot trivia, but the historical characters are brought to vivid life. Margaret, who was my 23rd gr-grandmother, grew from an intelligent child to an intelligent woman, married at age 8 to Henry V who was to become the Holy Roman Emperor and she its Empress as well as the King and Queen of Germany. The charts, lineage and timeline of people and events at the end help one to better understand the history of that far away era. The only fault I found was that a little more attention to the editing would have been helpful. I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book, through Reading Deals, so I could give an honest review. I did that.
