The Nine of Us: Growing Up Kennedy, by Smith, Jean Kennedy

From the Back Cover

In this evocative and affectionate memoir, Ambassador Jean Kennedy Smith, the last surviving child of Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy and Joseph P. Kennedy Sr., offers an intimate and illuminating look at a time when she and her siblings lived and learned together under one roof.Prompted by interesting tidbits in the daily papers, Rose and Joe Kennedy would pose questions to their nine children at the dinner table: “Where has Amelia Earhart gone?” “Do you think there will be war in Europe?” “What will the British do?” It was a nightly custom that helped shape the Kennedys into the men and women they would become. Before Joe and Rose’s children emerged as leaders on the world stage, they were simply a loving circle of brothers and sisters who played football, swam, sailed, read, and pursued their interests. They were children inspired by their parents, who instilled in them a strong work ethic, a deep love of country, and an intense appreciation for the sacrifices their ancestors made to come to America. “No whining in this house!” was their father’s regular refrain. It was his way of reminding them not to complain and to be grateful for what they had, and he always emphasized how important it is to give back. As Jean Kennedy Smith writes of her parents, “They knew how to cure our hurts, bind our wounds, listen to our woes, and help us enjoy life. We were lucky children indeed.” With charming anecdotes and dozens of rarely seen family photographs, The Nine of Us offers indelible, elegantly rendered portraits of a closely knit family known throughout the world.

Having read so many books on the Kennedys--including Ted Kennedy's memoir True Compass: A Memoir and Rose Kennedy's Times to Remember--I wasn't sure what to expect from Jean Kennedy Smith (former ambassador to Ireland), the youngest Kennedy daughter--and the only daughter to write a memoir. It wasn't exactly what I had hoped for, but I wasn't really disappointed either. Jean Kennedy's memoir is obviously heavily influenced by the family legacy--the knowledge that she is the surviving child of Rose and Joseph Kennedy, whose three sons--and whose family itself--mean so much to so many Americans. With that responsibility in mind, she shares cozy memories, warm and positive ones, of growing up in that family.Modestly, Jean's memories in this book are all shared with a brother or sister or her parents--except when she goes away to college and her roommate (soon to become her close friend) is Ethel Skakel, who will soon fall in love with and marry Jean's older brother Bobby. Other than that, and meeting her own husband (who also became an important help to her brothers), Jean keeps the family front and center in her memoir--and, of course, she's right, that's exactly who we want to hear about. It's a slim book--more about Kennedys growing up than the political years and decisions--and you won't find any scandals--but there's a quiet charm of days gone by, when even adults played touch football on the lawn near the ocean and evening entertainment was family word games, listening to a radio program, or --for the Kennedy children-- the treat of having their father (at one time a movie producer who helped start RKO studios) bring home a new movie to show to the family and friends in the private screening room at Hyannis Port. She mentions current events sparsely as needed--the family life in London before the war, when Joe was U.S. ambassador there (the first Catholic ambassador to Protestant England). Historical events are touched on lightly and infrequently; this is a personal book, not a history lesson.Unlike her brother Ted, Jean doesn't write about the tough school years at a variety of boarding schools for the boys and Catholic school for the girls. Instead, she describes the (possibly over-idealized) summers together on the Cape. Unlike her mother, she doesn't talk about the family struggles of past generations, or say much about the business of Joe or the frequent long travels of Rose. Biographers pointed out that Joe made many decisions for the boys and Rose was closer in many ways with the girls, and that comes through here, too, although Joe still seems the warmer and more affectionate parent. Rose, shows herself as disciplined, a natural (and ambitious) teacher and a mother who wanted her children to use the summer vacations to develop skills in everything from swimming to dancing to tennis to typing--punctuated with a daily hour for reading (Jack loved this; some of the others found it an unwelcome restriction). Both parents were highly aspirational, instilling in their children the importance of family, of learning, of accomplishing important things in life and in not taking their comforts and good fortune for granted.Rose's memoir will show you a little more the downside--she's honest about hitting the children (Eunice calls it "beating" them) with coat hangers--and her guilt about frequent trips away from home, with Joe taking over many duties, along with the nurses. In her own memoir, Rose and Joe seem very strict, very demanding--high standards and demands mixed with pride and indulgence for their nine children with their high spirits, noise and fun--being sure to keep them unspoiled and engaged in meaningful activities.Jean loves her parents and her brothers and sisters and has nothing bad to say about any of them. She does, briefly, mention the sad times--her oldest brother's death in the war, her eldest sister's botched lobotomy that left her severely mentally and physically impaired, another sister's fatal plane crash when she was barely 28 years old. Then, of course, she mentions the public service of her three brothers and -- briefly, and without much detail, the assassinations of Jack and Bobby. There's not much here about her own children--she knows we want to hear about Jack and Bobby and Teddy and the fun growing up and how great they were as adults and how she loved and idolized them just like so many of us do still--only Jean was there. It's a light book, a fast read, with a photo on almost every open double-page, not on special photo paper so its not very well detailed, but they're great to see, and makes it a bit like a scrapbook feeling. Where else will you read about--and see--the Halloween costumes Jackie designed for her and Jean while first lady--so that they could go trick or treating in cognito with their children? Jean relied a lot on her own journals for the stories she shares. If you are a fan of the Kennedy's, her book is not going to tell you anything shocking or (if you've read a lot) much that's new, but it's Jack and Bobby and Teddy's sister--she's the last of their generation, and she wants to tell us about what it was like back then. Seriously, who could resist grabbing a cup of tea and enjoying her memories? , .

An engaging, well written read about an American royal family, Jean Kennedy Smith has invited us in to share the wonderfulmemories of their childhood and beyond. Their lives were molded by wise and focused parents whose high standards instilled in themqualities of intelligence, curiosity, spiritualism, family loyalty and a sense of purpose. I did not want to put her book down as my eyes closed at night.

This book tells Jean Kennedy's love for her brothers and sisters. Because the family is so big she could not go into great detail. She does not write about any of the scandals in the family but did write very briefly about John, Joe, kick, and Bobby's deaths, and the tragedy of Rosemary's lobotomy. Light reading.

Great simple read on the historic Kennedy family. Jean gives us an insight into life in the Kennedy household with family pictures never seen before. Jean writes this as a Kennedy member, not author and I deeply enjoyed her bias as a Kennedy member. Jean, I am a biased lover of the Kennedy family and all things Kennedy. At this point I have read everything published. I enjoyed this "fly on the wall" of the Kennedy home perspective. I will never lose my intense love of everything Kennedy.

Interesting, touching autobiography of one of the younger Kennedy children that taught me a number of things I didn't know about the family. Written from a fairly protective family viewpoint, which is understandable and expected. The love of her family is felt throughout the book. I ended up buying a copy to send to my mom, because she was interested in some of the things I mentioned that she had not known as well. Want to read more about the other siblings. Fascinating family and time

I have not read many books about the Kennedys, and none about their growing - up years. This was a very interesting look at their lives as children, and the things their parents considered important in raising them. Children are not raised this way any longer, and it's very telling. This book explains how one family came to be so important to our nation, and gives direction on leading children into lives of faith and service.

Not a good read at all! I am a Kennedy follower andthis book is way "too flowerly". So many facts are leftout.Do not recommend.

Interesting account about the Kennedy family. A lot of tragedy in this family. This story was written by the youngest daughter, so she wasn't in the picture for many years. This isn't the normal 11 member family because they had the money to hire household help. I will say the parents taught their children to have integrity and patriotism.

What a great fun book to read to kids, even a three year old loves it but more for 5 and over!

A curious, imaginative, young boy, who barely speaks as a child and isn’t like the all the other students, nor does he want to be, grows into one of the most genius minds that changes life as we know it. A celebration of Einstein’s curiosity and genius will pique the interest of any budding scientist. A must have book for every classroom and home of the precocious child. Why I Like This Book: An amazing way to bring the life and work of Albert Einstein alive to children. What a perfect introduction to the young reader about the famous physicist who never stopped questioning the world around him. The whimsical illustrations illuminate each page, and it shines a light on the underlying message the story shares about the value of the imagination and how that should be nourished and not crushed. An awakening of the senses and a fascinating read!

I had to read this book to write a biography on Einstein for my Literature in Childhood Education class. It was cheap enough to just buy it on Kindle instead of hunting down in the library. I didn't think much of the class itself, but this book surprised me. I learned facts about Einstein that were designed to appeal for children, but why wouldn't adults like to know silly facts like Einstein hated socks? I learned a lot of quirky things about the man and I got a perfect score on my assignment. I'm very happy. The illustrations are consistent with a children's book and parallel the story very well, it would be easy for children learning to read to follow along with this book. Buy it for yourself or your kid! It's good!

Seeing my 7 year old read this book was an experience I will never forget. He often feels alone due to his gifted mind. He didn't talk until he turned 3 and was misdiagnosed with ASD and Asbergers. Once he started talking he interrupted his teacher with questions and was very exited to learn new things and explore solutions to his ideas. His kindergarten behavior was not asynchronous to his intelligence. which showed up during his ADHD eval. His IQ is in the top 2% on the charts which is great but the real lesson to learn in this book is to be yourself no matter how that looks to the rest of the world!

Amazing book! My 6 year old devoured this book in about 20 mins. He AND myself absolutely loved learning more about Einstein. The story is easy to read and it tells kids that it is ok to be different and in some aspect it is a advantageous feature to have and encourage them to never stop dreaming in achieving your wildest dreams. He read this book a couple of time and will revisit again the rest of his childhood, I hope!

This book has become a favorite in our house! While this book is recommended for the 6-9 age group, my 4 year old gets a kick out of it. She doesn't yet understand some of the scientific words and concepts (i.e. atoms, magnetism, etc;) but that doesn't stop her from enjoying the story. What I love about this book is that it's based on a real person and true events - finally, a children's book that's not based on farm animals! It starts out by detailing how little Albert didn't talk much when he was a child, was mischievous in class and getting in trouble and didn't relate well to the other children. It then goes into his career - how he wanted to be a teacher but ended up working in a government office. Eventually, the book talks about Albert's ideas and recognition. You also learn about Albert's quirks - how he didn't like to wear socks, enjoyed ice cream and the violin and liked to wear the same baggy clothes. Unfortunately, it does talk about his smoking pipe which I had to explain to my daughter - I turned that into a lesson about how smoking is bad for you but it was something they used to do in Albert's time because they didn't know any better! The hardcover version is definitely sturdier but the new paperback version holds up well. I do wish that they didn't put the font in a red color on some pages - it's hard to see with the background color.

What makes this book so perfect is the collaboration between the author and the illustrator. The pictures match the text so well, and really capture the intensity and chaos in Albert Einstein's mind. I've read it a few times and love it.

Although this book is meant for older children, I read it to my 1.5yo and he was hooked! Obviously he doesn't understand many of the main concepts, but he knows who "Albert" is and recognizes him in other situations. And he sits quietly and listens to the entire book which does not happen very often. I wish the authors would do more books like this about other prominent people.

Lovely story and illustrations. I understand why it was nominated for a Newberry Award. Can't wait to give it to my grandson for his birthday. I made him an Explorer kit, including a compass and a magnifying glass to go with it. The fact that it is the story of a real boy means that my grandson will have an interest in Einstein firmly planted in his young mind and heart. I think it could lead to reading more about Einstein as he grows older. And it will be so much fun to help him explore the world around him like a little budding scientist/explorer.

I read this book fairly quickly because quite frankly it was relaxing just reading it. To me that said that the author walks in the world he has described and wants to help others find the clarity and peace that he's attained. I had never thought of the concept of being "alergic" to a color because of the feelings it calls forth, yet doing some of the exercises proved this to be the case. I will read it again, at a slower pace because I think there's much to be gained by doing so.

I love this book and wanted to highlight (no pun intended) sentences in each paragraph. The book starts with a quote from Nikola Tesla- "My brain is only a receiver. In the Universe there is a core from which we obtain knowledge, strength, and inspiration. I have not penetrated into the secrets of this core, but I know that it exists."Light animates our projections, and I think that photons, particles, waves, and the observer effect are the key to our ever understanding life, God, and consciousness.Well written and drawing from tremendous first hand experience, Dr. Liberman discusses light and health, color therapy and color homeopathy- plus gives simple exercises that improve not only eyesight, but also awareness. What I found most useful is the 'experiment' that he said has profoundly improved his life. It is a way to align seeing with focusing inner vision to what he calls 'presence'. I personally think it connects the observer to omnipresence by making our internal light coherent rather than scattered.om·ni·pres·ence : the presence of God everywhere at the same time.

The first moment I held this sparkling book in my hands, I felt lighter. Reading Luminous Life was very healing for me. I thoroughly enjoyed the many insights I received and the many Aha moments I had. I have been a serious spiritual seeker my whole life and thanks to this book, many of my burning questions were answered. Reading this book was like lightly rubbing my eyes clear of confusion, leaving me with bright eyes to fully see the love and support all around me. I am so grateful for Jacob reminding me that there is absolutely nothing wrong with me and there had never been anything wrong with me. After reading, Luminous Life, I now feel more courageous to surrender to the friendly flow and to fully accept, embrace and trust the unfolding of life. I thank GOD for Jacob Liberman and his new book for inspiring me and showing me the possibility to feel right at home in every area of my life!

The book contains great insights on scientific as well as on the philosofical and practical essence of light and its role in our lives. For me, the most intriguing was the idea that the light continually guides us to the next step in our lives. When light plays such a crucial role in the lives of plants and animals, why should we be any different? What catches our eye is, indeed, the next step that either shows us what is next or brings us a glimps of who we are and thus, increases our self-awareness. Many times in my life have I witnessed this to be true. It does not mean it is going to be nice or comfortable but it will enable us to grow. This book is a treasure in revealing the mechanism behind the process.

The author brings fresh perspectives to the intersection of science and spirituality. His explorations of how light as a medium through which our awakened self can become known to us once again are inspiring and illuminating. The prose was very accessible. I recognize the information in its pages as truths to be embodied and lived. You would be well served to add this to your library of books to nourish your souls journey

“Your book offers a new way to transform my struggles in life into an experience of gently connecting with awareness at every second. I am very grateful that you wrote it. It gives “simple” tools to help and ground me. It is a constant reminder that acceptance is the way, that life when we go with the flow is guiding us .”the light, life,is always here for us , are we choosing life or the fight with it . Let’s go back to the source , take a second , breathe and let the light force of the universe guide you into seeing from your soul . This book is a companion manual to help you go through the ups and downs a little better every time . Thank you Jacob!

Science and spirituality meet in such a fundamentally real way. Luminous Life details how our perception is based on what we think we see, as opposed to what is really possible. As a believer in more than meets the eye, this book provides intelligent access to our full potential as human beings. Insightful, compassionate, telling... there is so much to glean from these pages, that I look forward to reading them again.

It's almost a book on how to stay in touch with your spiritual side. The book is great for those looking to live a better life and the exercises in it are scientific because in other books this author has invented therapies that eliminate the need for glasses. We are all made of light and life is about living like you are a child. This book is amazing

Spiritual Rhythms for the Enneagram: A Handbook for Harmony and Transformation, by Adele Ahlberg Calhoun Doug Calhoun

Review

"This book makes a wonderful contribution to the deeper understanding of the ancient tool of the Enneagram. Doug and Adele and Clare and Scott masterfully weave deep insight along with helpful spiritual direction and application on every page. Spiritual Rhythms for the Enneagram is not just an invitation to gain more information but an opportunity for personal transformation as well. I encourage you to not only read this book but allow it to read you!" (Joe Walters, executive director, Potter's Inn Soul Care Institute)"Spiritual Rhythms for the Enneagram is a unique contribution to Enneagram literature. The authors invite us to experience the Enneagram in a contemplative, healing way. Through Scripture, penetrating questions, and spiritual practices appropriate to each Enneagram space, they call us to a richer, deeper self-awareness. This is not a book to guzzle. It is a book to digest slowly. It is a meal to consume alone or with friends. It is a feast for the soul." (Alice Fryling, author of Mirror for the Soul: A Christian Guide to the Enneagram)"As the modern teaching of the Enneagram is rapidly evolving to meet the urgent need of helping clarify identity, what the Calhouns and Loughriges have done in Spiritual Rhythms for the Enneagram is nothing short of remarkable. This fresh and timely contribution to the Enneagram's tradition offers a seamless integration of faith and identity. Engaging, compelling, and courageous, Spiritual Rhythms for the Enneagram provides practical application on some of the Enneagram's more under-explored concepts. There's no doubt the depth of spirituality embodied in the authors' personal lives animates these pages with profound clarity, offering contemporary applications for an ancient tool." (Christopher L. Heuertz, founding partner of Gravity, a Center for Contemplative Activism, author of The Sacred Enneagram)"For me, identifying my Enneagram type was like the dog who caught the car―now what? I knew there was more than just becoming a better version of myself. Thanks to Spiritual Rhythms for the Enneagram I now know and appreciate concepts like head, heart, and gut IQs; spiritual rhythms; and the Ignatian practices of discernment, and consolation and desolation. This handbook serves as a trusted advisor, reflecting the four authors' life experiences and deep expertise. I now have an inspiring resource for how to return to my true self." (Joan O. Wright, O'Sullivan Wright Inc.)"As valuable as this book is for getting an in-depth view of each Enneagram type, it is an essential resource for understanding how the head, heart, and gut can work together, empowered through spiritual practices to have dynamic, harmonious relationships. In these pages, you will find a variety of ways to discover more deeply who you are, are not, and who you can love more fully. The depth of information and the comprehensive resources make this a unique Enneagram handbook that you will want to reference often. I use the insights and practices in these chapters every single day in my relationships with family and friends as well as in spiritual direction, teaching, and team building. This is the Enneagram book I have been waiting for―applying what is in these pages will change your relationships and your life." (Mary Albert Darling, associate professor of communications, Spring Arbor University)"A fantastic book! The authors of this comprehensive handbook deliver on their promise to help readers answer next-steps questions. The embedded narratives allow readers to go beyond system and theory to experience an embodied Enneagram. This useful resource provides practices and pathways for my own continued spiritual transformation and in my work with others. Exceptional!" (Nina Barnes, vice president of student life, University of Northwestern-St. Paul, conflict coach, spiritual director)"What a welcome contribution to the literature on the Enneagram, particularly from the Christian perspective! Spiritual Rhythms for the Enneagram delivers on its commitment to answer this important question: I know my number; what do I do now? It does so in a clear, accessible, and practical way. Their deep work on the Harmony Triads is both newsworthy and noteworthy. Congratulations to the four authors bringing forth this important material and doing so with one voice." (Ginger Lapid-Bogda, author of Bringing Out the Best in Yourself at Work)"People ask, Now that I know my type, what do I do with it (or myself)? After reading Spiritual Rhythms for the Enneagram, you will know." (From the foreward by Jerome Wagner)"Spiritual Rhythms for the Enneagram is an accessible volume that will take your understanding of the nine personality types to the next level. In beautifully written prose, the authors present useful concepts and skills that will help you better understand yourself and others―equipping you to gracefully navigate the complexities of life." (Kimberly June Miller, counselor, author of Boundaries for Your Soul)"The journey that this new transformative work on the Enneagram invites you to take will change you . . . for good. With practice in the spiritual rhythms, you will not only know where you identify on the Enneagram, but will become an expression of the beauty and life that that number is meant to reveal to the world. The authors bring their personal journeys, extensive study, pastoral experience, and Enneagram expertise to this book. If you embark on this journey you will become more of who God created you to be and do." (Sibyl Towner, codirector of The Springs Retreat Center, coauthor of Listen to My Life)"I am deeply indebted to Doug and Adele Calhoun, for they introduced me to the Enneagram. They gave me hope that the wayward motivations of an Eight to control and confront could be redeemed into the desire to serve and release the potential in others. The Calhouns and Loughriges have laid out a process of harmonizing your head, heart, and gut into wholeness. If you truly want to fulfill the potential for which you have been made, this is the book for you. You will need to marinate in the carefully structured exercises and stories. Yet what awaits you is a treasure-trove of discovery that will set you free to flow in the stream of God's original design. Great payoff requires great investment." (Greg Ogden, author of Discipleship Essentials)"The first thing that struck me in reading this comprehensive dive into Enneagram awareness, practice, and spiritual literacy was the section on empathy and the way aspects of ourselves are reflected in our resistance and openness to others. The authors understand the humbling truth that as we awaken together, it's much less easy to hide from our egotism! Savor this guide because there is an abundance of solid practices to support your development. Using the Harmony Triads and their understanding of timeless religious wisdom, the Loughriges and Calhouns have generously offered countless reflections to digest and deepen communion with ourselves, others, and the God who is One." (Leslie Hershberger, Enneagram/integral course developer of Coming Home, editor of IEA Nine Points Magazine)

This is a resource to be used for doing serious work in character transformation. There are plenty of books out there that give you the introductory understanding of the Enneagram that we all need, this one goes far beyond that. You can take the time to look through it at a leisurely pace, but there's a lot of depth here to explore slowly. Each chapter is filled with excellent application questions and spiritual practices to engage in with God.Beyond just the chapters on each Enneagram number, there are 12 additional resources that the authors have developed in the appendix of this book that can help you engage with God in a very powerful way if you’re willing to invest the time to go there.I’ve read quite a few books on the Enneagram over the past ten years, and this one is very unique in the way it’s constructed. Even if you know a lot about the Enneagram itself, you’ve probably never engaged with the tool from the angle that this book was written. You’re getting a huge amount of wisdom packed into one small book!Side Note Worth Mentioning:There is a section near the beginning highlighting the definitions that the authors use throughout the book. These definitions are incredibly clear on what those terms mean, particularly as they relate to the Christian perspective of these definitions.I believe this is going to be extremely helpful for many who have been using these terms without clear mental images of what they are actually trying to say.Ex: What comes to your mind when you think of your true self? What comes to your mind when you think of your false self? These terms get thrown around a lot now in Enneagram resources, but they are so important to be defined well if we’re using them in our journey toward complete Christlikeness.

As a 73 year old, somewhat un-resourced male THREE, I have found this book to be an amazing resource. I have been an Enneagram student for over 15 years and this book has opened my eyes to previously undiscovered issues and challenges as I seek transformation. In this book, I recognized myself so many times and found it to be so helpful to read the authors’ insights.“Not enough” frequently echoes in my mind and this book helps me to see and to discover what to do with these feelings. Being wanted, valued and seen as excellent has been a driving force all my life and feeling insignificant has been intolerable. In this book, I see how I over-identify with my successes and/or failures. This book has helped me to understand the sources of many of these feelings and helped me create strategies to deal with them.I am now ready to retake the Enneagram test and to get a better grade… I found the authors discussion of “harmony triad” to be insightful. The book has helped me to notice how I respond when I am healthy and how I can find peace and harmony “in a way that isn’t just winning”.In conclusion, I found all of the Spiritual Rhythms for Threes to be particularly helpful. I loved the notion that “transformation happens when we intentionally put on the true, truthful self”. I found the practice of “Heart Presence with God” to be particularly soothing and peaceful. As I engaged with the recommended exercises, I felt a wonderful and peaceful Godly presence. In this book, I have discovered new insights about the THREE triad and I found the whole book to be extremely well written and a valuable and compelling read.

I was given the privilege of reading this book before it went public and I can say with confidence that the Calhoun's and Loughrige's have given us a feast for the soul. If you are an enneagram practitioner, this book will continue to deepen your understanding, application, and transformation. This is not for beginners but for those who have some immersion in the enneagram. With skillful word pictures, and personal examples, the authors take us on a journey of connecting the dots not only in our own type but more importantly connecting the way we have been created, (head, heart, gut). Being present to the presence in the present moment of our life is hard work but this book helps us do just that. The resources in the appendix are an added dessert to an already five star 9 course meal which you will find fully satisfying. This is a must have book in your hands if you are interested in being formed deeper in your walk with Christ or helping others in their journey.

As an Accredited Professional Enneagram teacher and spiritual director for SoulDig.com, "Spiritual Rhythms for the Enneagram" is an invaluable resource to me. This book provides much more than information, it engages my heart with beautiful words and invitations. It gently guides me to look inward to notice and name my false-self. However, it doesn't leave me there. Practices, prayers and exercises are offered to help guide me to my true-self - the person I was created to be in the image of God.This book represents decades of study, practice and experience as spiritual directors, Enneagram teachers, pastors, moms and dads, and friends. While I received my first copy of "Spiritual Rhythms for the Enneagram", I have already purchased two additional copies.

The Enneagram is such a powerful tool for practical day to day relationships as well as spiritual understanding and personal transformation. Knowing your number is just the beginning. It's a starting place and more importantly an invitation to a journey of self development and self awareness. Doug and Adele Calhoun and Clare and Scott Loughrige have written a book with a unique focus that helps each of us delve into our core. It is an amazing resource and tool for anyone hoping to take their knowledge of their number to a deeper level of understanding for themselves and for their relationships. I am grateful for this resource!

I read this book after seeing Laura Carstensen quoted in Time Magazine's excellent multi-faceted March 2, 2015 cover story on aging. Ironically, I was reading this while waiting as my wife was getting cataract and lens replacement surgery that will enable her to see better than she's ever seen in her entire life. Along with about 30 other "old people" who were about to experience the same miracle of modern medical technology on an assembly line to fix their eyes for life in a 10-minute operation. The previous reviews here for "A Long Bright Future"--while mostly 4- and 5-star--seemed somehow less than passionate, as was the audience to whom Carstensen presented in a 2012 TED YouTube video soon after "A Long Bright Future" was published. It's hard to be passionate about something none of us really understands nor appreciates yet ... that we are the first demographic cohort to really experience not just the government's plan for how Social Security, Medicare and 401(k)s will work together to sustain our after-work passage but also to learn how to make the most of additional years of longevity that we are all inheriting. It's kind of a "be careful what you wish for" circumstance we find ourselves in. We are constantly guilted for not saving enough for retirement, but no one ever planned for us to live this long or to have access to medical innovations that are adding quality years if not decades to our lives. As a 65-year old who still enjoys working, I read much of the daily barrage of articles and books about preparing emotionally and financially for retirement and have posted several of my reviews on Amazon for books like "Falling Short" and "Unretirement." "A Long Bright Future" adds a broader perspective to the discussion by reassuring us that we're not stupid for not preparing. We just need to appreciate what's happening in a broader, more opportunistic way.Several of the Amazon reviews here also raise the questions, "who is this book for?" and "who can best benefit from its message?" One reviewer was disappointed that Carstensen didn't describe what the future was actually going to be like. This reminded me of conversations I used to have with a colleague who also enjoyed science fiction movies that portray the future. He observed that most future visions were broken-down architectures from where we live in today, often bleak and dark, but with some cool new technology in the middle of the scenes. Think "Blade Runner." Carstensen points out that it's difficult for each of us to really envision a future that's not deeply impacted by what we know and do today. So, it seems to me that this book will benefit people of all age groups, but probably mostly 40- to 70-somethings will take the time to read it. But in doing so, we can all benefit in realizing that we can be productive and offer value to others for much longer than today's political debates and financial industry alarmists portray.Because as difficult as it is to make good decisions, many of these debates and alarmists are correct that something must be done if we are to live into our 90's and beyond. Laura Carstensen helps to us to think and plan at a deeper level to take better advantage of the extra time we have to gain greater satisfaction in what we can do for others and for ourselves.

This is the first time I have been compelled to submit a review of a book on Amazon. I just finished reading Dr. Carstensen's book and I am so excited to share it with others. Fortunately, I will be able to do so as I will be teaching a class entitled "Growing with Intention: Having the Life you Want after Age 40" through my local college's continuing education program starting in February 2011. Dr. Carstensen's book challenges baby boomers to change the way aging is viewed in our culture. I am so encouraged by her message. And, I am so thankful that I discovered this book just in time to share it with my students!

A well written book on getting older, full of studies, theories, ideas to put to good use. However, as an aged person myself I found some of the suggestions impractical for those of us who have already reached our"older " years. The author suggests a complete cultural change, which in my experience is not too practical, more a wish than a hope. However, there are some good points in it for all generations to consider.

So much incredible information within the pages. A must-read for everyone! Laura writes beautifully and gives us all much food for thought.

Such good information!

We need more of this as we find ourselves here longer. Even for the shorter journeys, this is a thought-provoking book.

Not what I was expecting, but very informative and enjoyable read.update in July 2018 - I have often thought about Dr. Carstensen's ideas presented in this book. When it came time for my to do my thesis in my LL.M. program. I turned to some of her ideas to complete it. Dr. Carstensen has many good insights about how we have to look at aging differently and if we are to look at aging differently, perhaps we should approach the earlier life a little differently too. Life might be better and maturity developed more appropriately with an outlook that is less of a mad rush and more intentional and paced.

The underlying message about the aging of our population and some of the consequences was straigtforward (although not necessarily "new news"), but the latter chapters I found somewhat repetitive and disappointing (perhaps I was looking for that "bright" future)

I bought this book as a cultural supplement while I am beginning to learn Chinese. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants a quick overview and a conversational introduction from someone who has spent a lot of time in China. As I was reading through this book, I found the brevity with which the content was brought forth easy to consume. I also linked a lot of the tips that were included for those who are going to be interacting with Chinese people, whether in work or in recreation. I thought these tips were anecdotal and at the same time encompassing a wide variety of circumstances. If you are looking for a book with a basic introduction to Chinese culture, this may be the book for you.

I lived in Hong Kong for a year and a half in the 80's, but a lot has changed in China since then. Before a recent trip to China I wanted a quick refresher on Chinese history and the classic Chinese literary works that are reflected in a lot of Chinese media and art. This book provided both as well as a lot of practical information on traveling, eating, and understanding modern Chinese culture. It's written in an easy-to-read style that is informative and not boring.

Being back and forth to China for 10 years, this book is very entertaining.Personally Im a rebel, I dont let cultures dictate me how to run my life, I am the master....I can live with that but this book is good as getting an idea how societies function (usually that is, dont take this as a dogma) its good to help you fit in an understand and also respect other people there.

Bought this after reading "A Geek's Guide to Japan" (which is excellent!). In comparison to the Japan book, this one reads like a dry collection of Wikipedia articles.

Excellent book that provides a solid understanding of the current status of China, with historic narratives, pictures, accounts, etc. that help bring someone traveling to China quickly up to speed across a wide array of topics! Highly recommend.

Great book with lots of information.

只是一些表面化的介绍(too slightly scratch and too superficial, but pictures are good)

Written in a format similar to DK travel books or the National Geographic magazine (with a plethora of photos), this is a colorful, informative, and lively introduction to 21st Century China. Matthew Christensen and Michael Paul pack a lot of useful information into an affordable volume that is suitable for (college or high school) students or travelers who are new to things Chinese. Most "introduction to China" books either focus on a particular academic discipline or treat important topics too simplistically. This book finds an agreeable middle ground. History, geography, politics, language, food, society, culture, and travel are all covered in an accessible and accurate way. There is an excellent chapter on "The Face of Urban China," which is the part of China most new visitors have a chance to see. While China is rapidly urbanizing, many Chinese still live in the countryside; it would have been nice to see a little more space dedicated to the lives of China's still-agrarian rural dwellers. That small quibble aside, this is an excellent primer on Greater China. Quite frankly, it made me yearn for some boiled pork dumplings and another trip to the "Middle Kingdom!"
