This anthology of commentary on the Psalms brings a potpourri of insights, a kind of condensed wisdom, to one's mind and soul. It is a pleasure to listen to the sages in this work.The Hebrew and English languages with their contrary reading directions always make a problem. The pages move from right to left as in Hebrew, but the two columns on each page move from left to right; this gives the effect of leap-frogging--2 columns backward, if you will, and 4 columns forward.Then there is the occasional typographical error. Still I love this set. It's the content, after all; and I appreciate the difficulties the editors must have faced in laying out the text.

Excellent set. If you want a different view of the scriptures and a deeper understanding, I would not hesitate to purchase this set. You will learn much, but make sure you are open to learning. If you are not, then this is not for you. It is a wealth of knowledge at your finger tips, but be prepared to be engaged and challenged.

A very in depth commentary on Tehillim but not overwhelmingly so. I use it mostly to look up any Tehilah which the Gemara I am studying makes reference to. This way, I can actually learn what the Gemara is referring to and why they quote a particular Tehilah.

This is advertised as a 2 vol. set but only received the 1st vol. This is of no real use to me if the set is not complete. Description needs to reflect what buyer is actually paying for. Very misleading and left me disappointed.

It's very important to see what the culture understood concerning the scripture. This is a very good book to expose that.

I wonder at the knowledge and research that goes into a commentary such as this. Everything I have ever read in this series offers life-changing perspectives, intellectual stimulation, and a historical awareness that makes Jewishness a wholly enveloping experience.

If you ever wanted to deeply appreciate the "Psalms" this two volume set is the way to do it.The Psalms are a peek into the daily life of profoundly devoted men of G-D. The main author being King David. Keen insight into a man's determined mission in life, "To Serve and Love HaShem".

Wonderful wisdom! The more I read the more understanding and enlightenment. I have Volume 1 and 2.

As someone who treasures his limited opportunities to get to coastal Maine (about every 3 years or so), his description of the inland areas I have not visited makes me want to add this to my next visit itinerary. For those of us who appreciate his unique prose and detailed description along with environmental commentary well ahead of his time, this was an enjoyable excursion to a time when the unspoiled was already starting to lose out to commercial interests. Of course those who toiled for subsistence wages in the dangerous and unbearable conditions were glad for the opportunities the resources of the woods provided.

Of the three books I have read by Thoreau (Walden and the Maine Woods being the other two), I enjoyed this one the most. Thoreau's description of the Cape Cod bay and coast are impeccable, and actually make you long to resort there. I would love to re-trace his course from Barnstable to Provincetown, visiting Truro and Wellfleet as I perused through the dunes and cliffs. There is quite a bit of very interesting history in this book as well, and he often cites "Mourt's Relation", a pilgrim document which I have since endeavored to read as well, and found to be very fascinating. Cape Cod is definitely a very worthwhile book to read, especially if you like images of the sea, wind, sand, and coastal weather. I truly enjoyed it very much.

This is a comment about the edition rather than the book:I bought this edition based on the review about the very helpful index. Please be careful about what edition you are actually buying. Many of these reviews are about different editions. I bought the BiblioLife paperback book with a picture of the green bicycle on the cover. I just received it and there is NO INDEX.It looks like the original text from an original printing (with smaller physical dimensions) was photocopied page by page and put into this paperback book. This will do the trick but I am a little disappointed and wish I had bought a different edition.It is confusing on amazon because when you click "look inside" it shows an index, with a tiny note saying the "look inside" refers to a different edition.

I liked the thorough descriptions of the excursions of the vast, wild Maine woods circa 1860. I followed the narrative going back and forth to Google Earth which made it feel as I was "along on the journey".Anyone whom appreciates the outdoors and nature will gravitate to the reverence in which HDT treats this collection of essays.

Most people are familiar with Thoreau through his Walden. Few know perhaps that he didn't stay put in Concord but journeyed to the Maine Woods and elsewhere, and that these travels were formative of his philosophy and ideas. Thoreau believed the Maine wilderness north of Bangor was every bit as wild as the west and other far flung corners of the continent in the 1850s, and here he shows us an incredible panorama of beauty and wonder. You will gain insight into how Native Americans hunted Moose in the mid-19th Century and why Thoreau, a vegetarian, disdained the killing of animals for meat. One of the most sriking passages is his description of the sound of a huge tree falling in the forest in the distance at night.In Ktaadn, Thoreau defines the essence of wilderness:"Nature was here something savage and awful, though beautiful. I looked with awe at the ground I trod on, to see what the Powers had made there, the form and fashion and material of their work. This was that Earth of which we have heard, made out of Chaos and Old Night. Here was no man's garden, but the unhandselled globe. It was not lawn, nor pasture, nor mead, nor woodland, nor lea, nor arable, nor wast-land. It was the fresh and natural surface of the planet Earth as it was made forever and ever."You do not need to read The Maine Woods on a wooded island in Maine (as I did) to be captivated and transported by it to a higher and greater sense of wilderness than you may ever have imagined.

This hardcover edition from Peninsula Press is unquestionably the best available edition of Thoreau's Cape Cod, for these reasons:1) While all other editions are based on Thoreau's journal entries from only his first three visits to the Cape, this edition includes an epilogue compiling Thoreau's notes from his fourth and final visit, in which he traveled south to Chatham and Monomoy.2) This is the only edition to translate the many, many Greek and Latin phrases Thoreau includes throughout the work, and it is also the only edition to provide illustrations, maps, and sidenotes in-text.3) This is the only indexed edition ever created.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for fans of both Cape literature and Thoreau in general.

All the memories come flooding back through his excellent narrative.I am glad I took the time to revisit this work, especially that I am older and in less of a hurry.

Unreadable edition - DO NOT PURCHASE! Worthless. No paragraphs, lots of computer typos, low quality grainy photos, no page numbers so index does not correspond to text. I love Thoreau but this sadly goes into the recycle bin!

This is the first audio version of a volume of Rabbi Adin Even-Israel (Steinsaltz)'s fine, accessible English language version of the Talmud. It's thus a welcome addition to the ways to step a foot into the sea of the Talmud. Much of the audio material about the Talmud is conveyed in Yeshivish, a language related to English, but not understandable to the average English speaker. This audio version is a faithful rendering of Rabbi Steinsaltz's plain-English translation and commentary on the Talmud. The Talmud is of course Talmudic, and thus not easy to access in any format. But this new product is among the most straightforward means for English speakers to gain entry into the original text. I highly recommend it. And for those running through the Daf Yomi for the first time, this will be a welcome aid. Here's hoping that further volumes are recorded as well.

My Talmud studies began and ended in middle school with Baba Metziah. I have two fine sets of Talmud given to me by father, alav hashalom they are in proud display at my home but are almost never opened. I happened across this recording and thought that it would be something I could listen to in rotation with my audible books.It is very well done. I find that it is best to listen to one daf at a time. Needless to say it brings back old memories of study. Now that I am mature it is much more interesting and meaningful. It is true that you need some background to get the full meaning. It is in English, not Hebrew, as the description says. Of course there are rabinnic terms sprinkled in liberally and it helps to know a little Hebrew. I would very much like more audible productions of this series.

The Talmud available as an Audio Book is excellent! The gemara is a conversation, so hearing it read is extremely enjoyable to me, as though I'm simply an eager learner, listening in the corner as the sages discuss. The reading is good and clear, the hebrew words are right on.I'll be honest, of all the volumes of Talmud that I'd want to enjoy during my commute, Sota isn't exactly high on the list, but regardless, I'm thankful to have it in such an accessible form and I really hope that other volumes of Steinsaltz excellent english translation are made available in audio form.

I would highly recommend this volume being bought alongside Our Troth: Living the Troth , which is Volume Two to this set. Volume Two has a glossary towards the end, so if one isn't familiar with some of the Old Norse or Old English terms strung throughout the text, the glossary is there and it does explain a lot.Volume One has two parts in it. The first part is the History and that history goes way back to even before the Indo-Europeans came to settle their parts of Europe. There are seven chapters to this history section. My favorite article was the last one, which goes from the Viking Age to today, explaining how through folktales and art the old stories about the Aesir kept the memories alive for our people. There is a real good explanation on how Nazi Germany damaged the image of Heathenism, while at the same time, Hitler thought that bringing back Heathenism from the grave was, well...stupid. What's "dead" is dead, or so he thought. There was one time when Hitler said Himmler ought not embarrass Germany by bringing up her past from a time that the Romans and the Greeks were far more culturally superior (p. 104). I find these quotes remarkable, because that is not what I have been told all these years. Yet, there it is, cited for evidence and further research!Part Two of Volume One is the BIG part of this book (chapters 8-26). Many of these essays deal with specific God/desses. For example, Chapter 11 is all about the stories of Loki. The following chapter is all about Thor. Chapter 12, the one on Thor is my favorite, possibly because I am heavily biased when it comes to my "Patron!" But some of the older stories about Loki--Loki cracks me up! That one sure has proven to be crafty and creative to the extreme! It is a really good idea to have a fire extinguisher handy if one is dealing with Loki (p. 211)! But then, I also think of Loki as totally enigmatic. When he tricked Balder's brother into killing Balder (more about Balder in Chapter 13), well, I guess that is the end of fun and games. Sometimes, a practical joke has serious consequences. Another favorite of mine is Chapter 24. It explains the cosmology of our religion. If one is looking for where Midgard is in the "World Tree" and how our home relates to everyone and every place else, this is a good place to get all the info one needs. It has proven to be the most comprehensive, yet easy to follow reading I have ever come across on this subject.How easy is it to read? It is very easy! The size of the font, plus the line spacing is pleasant to the eyes. With an occasional exception of a word given in Old Norse, the vocabulary is to where any high school student can read and understand. With those occasional words, there is a glossary in the back of Volume Two (which is why I recommend getting that as well) that is really good with all these definitions. Personally, I'm glad that these words are in there, because I do learn something new every time I read these passages. It keeps me on my toes. But, it is easy to let the easy reading (for the most part) to be deceptive. There is a lot of information jammed packed in these pages. These articles and essays have been written with a lot of scholarship. One can rest assured that one is not reading anything that has no business being in there, that this book is amazingly accurate. It has that encyclopedia feel to it.With that said, I would like to point something out. These two volumes are also pretty diverse. One won't just get one side to a particular issue. There were several contributors to this corpus. Even in specific articles, there was more than a couple of people adding their few cents in. There is a wide range of opinion here and the reader gets to sit in and see the different viewpoints take shape. This is a wonderful way to get some creative ideas going, and at the same time, remaining tru to Asatru. Many of the contributors have Masters and PhD's in the fields of Germanic languages, literature, or cultural studies. This makes these volumes worth every penny and then some!These two volumes are great references to have. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for the just beginning beginner to the most well seasoned of our folk. I rate this set 5/5!

I purchased both volumes and am grateful I did. These are large books filled with tons of information. The history and lore is well written and accomplishes an easy reading that is influenced by various schools of thought - the writer presents the information in a way that allows the reader the liberty to interpret the material and the various aspects of the gods & goddesses in a way that feels good. Great material for anyone interested in Northern European pre-christian history, practicers of the Asatru religion, or those interested in the esoteric/magic aspects.

This book, at 560 or so pages, is a well organized and researched summary of the body of lore, history, and anthropology of the Northern and Germanic troth. In every entry, I believe Gundarsson (the chief author and editor, although many sections are done by contributing authors) proves he earned his ph.d in old Norse and is really able to marshal sources common, scholarly, and obscure to paint the fullest picture possible of views of the gods and the varying ways in which they and other beings were worshiped over the centuries. It obviously isn't a substitute for the eddas and sagas themselves, but rather serves as a guide to all things related to heathen lore. But, put another way, the authors have accessed and utilized hordes of sources that many of us may not have access to or the time to read, much less know which sources to read without having first read a work like this (with it's massive references and bibliography, or book-hoard).I think this and volume two ( Our Troth: Living the Troth ) should probably be among the first five books any heathen / Asatruar buys, if not the first (The others, I would say, would be the eddas themselves along with maybe a modern retelling of them like by Kevin Crossley-Holland.)To me, _Our Troth_ is like the first encyclopedia of the Northern religion, and its main author like a Diderot of all things Germanic. Given the tremendous scope of the work as well as the well-learnedness of the authors (their erudition, to borrow a Latin word), these two volumes remain unparallelled.

Recieved the book this morning. Product was damaged by seller stuffing book into packaging causing the back cover and about 25 pages to fold up about 2 inches. The book now has a permanent crease and fold that is very anaesthetic.As for the book itself, it is a fantastic read. So far I am about 80 pages in. I have learned so much already and can already tell a reread will be required to retain the massive amount of information in this book.

I haven't read it cover to cover. I wasn't looking for a Cover to Cover book. I simply needed a well written book to reference when I needed to reference and easy to read for fast digestion. I have Volume 1 and 2 and they're perfect. These books are clear...in depth and best of all...not christian...LOL I only wished they were hard cover as I'll be reading a lot out of these books and I'm trying to be gentle so they'll last as long as possible. I'll probably have them bound different later to make sure they survive my use of them.

I am now the proud owner of both volumes of Our Troth. Of all the books on Heathenry, this is the most in-depth, informative and easily absorbed work out there. I recommend studying the Eddas, and other manuscripts alongside reading both volumes of Our Troth. This was absolutely a labor of love, and very well written and thought out. I do not think 5 stars is enough to express how great this book is!! Whether you are new to Ásatrú, or have been Heathen for years, this is a must have!

Lichatowich argues that the evolutionarily significant units are not just breeds of each species but the individual runs of each bread - - fall Chinook on the Klamath, and so on. This is a critical distinction when the story turns to humans. Americans have tried to mitigate the damage they cause by building salmon hatcheries. These hatcheries are managed by overly optimistic fish biologists transferring salmon fry from different runs among streams. The salmon's biological clocks are out of sync with their new homes, since each run has evolved for the water levels and variation in food abundance of their original homes.And how have we destroyed the salmon? It's popular to blame the dams, but Lichatowich points at all the other culprits. Habitat destruction by livestock grazers, stream destruction by loggers, overfishing by the salmon industry, and the willful ignorance of science by everyone. We have converted rivers and watersheds into factories for electricity, lumber, and cattle. Hatchery management is a poor substitute, it's trying to have salmon without rivers. I bought this for my Fish and Wildlife Conservation class at Oregon State University and I have really enjoyed this book. It is an easy read packed full of information about salmon in the Pacific Northwest. The history of the man's impact on the salmon in the nineteenth century is very interesting. It's a great insight, written for all to understand.

This book is an excellent source of what must be done to save the wild salmon. Man must display some humility rather than hubris in his attempt to save the wild salmon.

Great reference

The book is fantastic. In new condition. Full color photographs and loads of information about each patch and WWII patches in general. We were given a collection of WWII military patches and wanted to display them properly and give people an idea of where the patches were worn and who wore them.

As a novice World War II patch collector, I found this book to be very informative. It has good descriptions of the major patches that the collector will encounter, along with estimated prices for both common and uncommon variations. The book also has very useful information on how to spot post-World War II patches. I highly recommend this book for the beginning patch collector.

My favorite for quick reference. Very well done.
