I read a lot of praise for Corwin half of the series and mixed reviews for the second half. Still, the way everyone gushed about the world of Amber made me want to give it a chance. I realize now a lot of the positive reviews came from people who read them when they were younger, and nostalgia is clearly part of their love for this series.I hated the writing. It was a weird mix of very formal and informal speech. A lot of the dialogue came off awkwardly. Especially at the beginning when Corwin is trying to get information from his family. The first person descriptions don't fare much better. I can still remember the line where Corwin takes his brother hostage, tells him to get into the car and the next sentence is "he does this thing and I take his sword".If you haven't read this book as a kid and you want to know if you should give it a shot. I'd say only do it if you don't read many modern fantasy books or aren't naturally a critical reader. Or maybe if you're a huge fan of 80s fantasy novels.

My first Zelazny book. I thought I'd go BIG and get the Great Book of Amber with all ten chronicles! Glad I did. I love this guy's style and his vocabulary is simply amazing! I am in the third book and I am convinced this author was an avid lucid dreamer. He possesses imaginative descriptions and ideas like very few others. There's an eloquent flow to his writing that can pull you right into the story line from the get go. Beyond gifted, this author is clearly connected to pure source!

Love this series! I read the first part of the series when I was a kid and fell in love with the worlds described in these books. It would take me a really long time to do an in depth review of each book in the series so I will keep this brief as I have to get ready for work in a few minutes. I recently bought this book so I could read the last 5 books of the series. I had no idea that Roger Zelazny had continued the series beyond book 5 (The Courts Of Chaos) with a different main character but I have to say I'm glad he did. Now I have a chance, as an adult, to jump back into the rich worlds contained within. There are probably many reviews that go into the content of the books more then I have time to so I will leave it at this. The writing is excellent, the story is riveting, and the characters are extremely memorable. I like that all ten books have been combined into one really well made paperback volume. If you need a great book to read then I suggest you give the Chronicles Of Amber a try. You won't be disappointed. May not be suitable for young children. I read it when I was probably about 11 or 12 which I think is probably an alright age to handle the content but there is a bunch of violence and a tiny bit of (very glossed over) sexual material within. As always it is up to the parents to decide. Anyway, check it out yourself!

After reading this book, I would guess it was written with a male audience in mind -- lots of sword play and other macho stuff in it, but something about it hooked me. It had to for me to get through all 1260 pages! I haven't read a book that long since Gone With the Wind. My favorite part of the book was the first half that centered on Corwin. The later chapters that focused on his son Merlin were not as interesting to me. I think it was because it lost some of its other-world feel. Merlin and his friend, Luke, basically had the same interests and mannerisms as young men in present-day society. Overall, I enjoyed the book a lot. It caused me to stay up past my bedtime on many of nights.

I first read this series as it came out, I remember some parts and realize that I might have only read 5 or 6 of the books originallyAn. I'm in the 6th book/chapter and find the continuity is fairly smooth considering the length of time between books. I will try to come back and update this after finishing the series, Some stories tend to show their age when reread , this compilation of stories hang together . If you like fantasy with a bit of detective work involved give this book a read.

There has never been anyone like Roger Zelazney.His imagination had no bounds and this it one of his very best.We loved it when he was writing each of the ten books contained in this volume.I still reread it again and again. I am no sure if the Amber series or Lord of Light is my favorite choice of his work. Everything he ever published has been wonderful.

I love sci-fi and I love fantasy books (and economics, but that's a whole different conversation). This book has both and is amazing. I have read parts during "meetings", breaks, my kids' sporting events, and out in other public settings and I have to say that many have come up and said, "Zelazny? How do you like it? Isn't it amazing?!" They know it and cherish as much as I do. The books are fast-paced and very involved. They are funny and vivid. I cannot put into words how wonderful these books-- this series-- is. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes a quick read that still entangles you!

This is a lovely collection of some of her best talks. I like to listen to Pema Chodron because she has a way of connecting the teachings to real life and common, shared experiences that I have not found in other teachers. Deepens my appreciation for the tradition.

My therapist recommended Pema Chodron's books to help me learn to reduce stress and work through some trauma that I've experienced. I'm not much of a reader with my busy life/work schedule, so this collection was great for my long rides to and from work. Pema is insightful and humorous, and I've learned a lot about myself and life through her teachings. I highly recommend this product.

A wonderful and insightful collection of teachings with humor and self examinations that encourage each of us to examine ourselves as well. Pema Chodron presents these teachings simply and honestly.

I tend to take in the pain of others. Pema gives me a way of taking in the pain of living by breathing out compassion, a healthy way of handling that pain. I listen to the six CDs in rotation during my commute. I have ordered more of her CDs. No matter if the lessons are basically the same, just listening to her centers me.If you are a religious person, please don't think that she is trying to convert you to Buddhism. She is just giving you a tool to get through the day. Nothing in her lessons contradicts any religion that believes in the practice of compassion.

Pema Chodron is my favorite person to listen to. She is wise, funny, honest and non-judgmental. Listening to her helps me be more accepting and peaceful. She has a wonderful, soothing voice and a gift for imparting knowledge and spirituality without being preachy.

Every CD in this set is excellent, and since they were taped on site at sessions in Cape Breton you feel like Pema is right there in the room with you. Pema's words along with her wonderfully soothing voice will truly heal the aches and pains of living. It's not just the simplicity but the honesty that makes owning everything Pema worthwhile. If I had known about her years ago, I would have lived differently, if not more easily. Now, because of Pema, there are no regrets, just today. This set is very good therapy.

I read a short book by Pema and decided I wanted to get to know her teachings a bit better. I decided on this collection of CD's because I thought it was fairly priced. I have listened to two of the CD's and have really enjoyed them. I felt the topics addressed some of the work I am doing right now on my own path and therefore felt this information supports my work. I think the topics would fortify anyones work no matter where they are on thier own path of self realization/yoga etc.....

Jesus could help religious people, as he originally did, embrace a more holistic, less literal approach to law that would be better promote human flourishing.Akyol gets to this conclusion by way of two points he develops, with clear and accessible prose, supported by considerable scholarship, both Christian and Muslim.One is that Islam is a closer cousin to Christianity than both traditions have generally acknowledged. In fact, Akyol closely reviews the theory and evidence that Islam - either through direct influence or through divine revelation - could be a further development of a Jewish form of Christianity, in which Jesus is honored as a messianic teacher and prophet, without being worshiped as part of the triune godhead. Muslims, after all, honor Jesus as a word of God, a prophet, a miracle-performer, a son of the virgin Mary, and one who will come again to restore all things.The second and related point is that Jesus can continue to serve as a guide and teacher and prophet, not just to the world at large, but specifically to the Muslim world. The West generally, and Christendom in particular have ironically made it much more difficult for Muslims to do this. A defining question for Muslims (and indeed, for much of the world) over the past two centuries has been how to relate to an aggressively powerful, colonial West. Understandably, defensiveness and hostility have resulted, rather than dialogue and reflection.Thankfully, Muslims need not consider Jesus a product of the West. A Palestinian Jew, born to a people group oppressed by a Western empire themselves, Jesus' teaching and legacy and prophetic voice are not the property of the Western world or even of Christendom. Muslims can embrace Jesus as their guide and teacher and prophet as well.Much more could be said. As a non-Muslim who is deeply committed to the Way of Jesus, I find Akyol's treasure trove of scholarship and perspective fascinating and hopeful. I'll close, though, with one more quotation, this one from a Jesus-oriented, 20th century Egyptian Muslim, Khalid Muhammad Khalid."He is the love which knows no hatred, he is the peace that knows no disquiet, and he is the salvation that does not perish. And when all this is realized on earth, then at the same time, the return of Christ is realized. This is the Christ who will return, and whose return the Messenger prophesied: peace, love, truth, the good and beauty. With the truthful Messenger, we declare: 'Christ, not Barabbas, the true not the false, love not hatred, peace not war, life not destruction.'" (215)I follow and worship Jesus, but anyone who can view Jesus on such terms, regardless of the details of their theology, I will be glad to call friend and brother.

As a biblical scholar and someone who is active in interfaith dialogue with Muslims, I was intrigued by the premise of this book. Mustafa Akyol ranges widely through early Christian documents and overlooked scholars in the Muslim world to explore two related, but slightly different, questions. One is the complex relationship of how the Jesus is presented in the Qur'an is both similar to and radically different from Jesus in the canonical gospels and Christian theology. He suggests that a link can be found in the teachings and traditions of the Jewish Christians, an early sub-group of emerging Christianity who were eventually repudiated by orthodox formulations, but whose traditions persisted even into the time of Muhammad. In the understanding of Jesus among those communities- a Jesus who is a prophet, a teacher, and a miracle worker, but not the second person of a triune God- Akyol sees a potential bridge between the three Abrahamic traditions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.The second issue is what Jesus as an honored prophet and servant of God might have to say to Muslims today. Comparing the challenges faced by the Jewish community under Roman occupation in Jesus' day to the contemporary scene, in which many Muslims feel "occupied" by Western powers, he notes that such times prompt strategies of identifying with the occupier, turning back to religion as resistance, or opting out. In Jesus' day, Sadducees were the assimilationists, while Pharisees sought religious opposition (with more militant Zealots turning to armed rebellion), and Essenes fled into the desert. In the contemporary Muslim world, Akyol sees conformist Muslims, Islamists (and the more militant jihadists), and Sufis acting out the same dynamics.In this world, as in his original context, Jesus can be the voice that would call for a renewal. Akyol writes: "One of [Abbas Mahmud] al-Aqqad's insights was that Jesus had come into a traumatized Jewish world divided into sects, none of which, in his view, offered Jews the religious revival they needed....'Jesus relocated ethics to a more humane center,' al-Aqqad argued, 'where the focus was a person's motives rather than meticulous compliance to the law.'"A noted journalist, Akyol writes clearly and engagingly about a complex topic, drawing on thoroughly Muslim scholarship and teaching while opening the door to a much deeper encounter between Christian and Muslim theology. Whether or not one agrees with his conclusions, the questions he explores are well worth the time.

I used this book in a Graduate course for teachers of Mathematics. They loved it! Why? It had a different focus then just getting to figure out what to do with the numbers in the problem. This book realized that most understand that in many different ways. This book asked the question: "What do we do with the money we accrue? What do we do about outrageous cost of borrowing money? How is the environment effected by the way we use resources? What about hidden cost? How much money do we spend in heating and cooling some of our buildings? How does this choice effect other choices? This book helped us to see the need to review the questions we are asking in math and to 'rethink' mathematics for the future not the past!

This book has a lot of good ideas for teaching mathematics in a way that will appeal to students. Less stuff for higher-level mathematics, but the lower-level stuff is really quite good and relates mathematics to the real world.

This is a valuable book. There are 2 main sections: first section is a thesaurus by topic. Second section lists words alphabetically and tells you where to find them in the topical section. There are fabulous lists throughout the book based on topics, such as: states and their capitals. 200+ countries and their capitals. Rivers of the world, Lakes of the world, mountains of the world.

The print is so tiny for this large volume book. I guess it is so huge that they had to compensate lest it enlarge further but really, what is the difference it was a bit bigger..none that I would mind. The type print is very small compared to my old much loved Roget's that is in shambles from years of use, however, this one far exceeds my expectations as far as content.One other thing I find odd is that when referencing the word and going to back to the numerical area that the numbers are forward facing instead of backward toward the alphabetized section. That is a bit awkward for me as I am use to looking toward the number from the alphabetic section. I suppose I will get use to it but it doesn't make sense to me it was cataloged this way.It's a fabulous thesaurus though!

Indispensable! I gave my old copy of this to my nephew going away to college. What a mistake for me! I was in graduate school at the time and had another thesaurus in dictionary form..and figured that would be fine. Yuck. I found myself wishing I had this version again..so I just bought another one.The way I use it is not to come up with words to impress people (well, not usually) but rather to remember a word that I want to use, but can't exactly recall (must be my age). I know you all have done it and can relate to that great feeling of finally finding that word! The conceptual setup is perfect for this becuase sometimes you can get close with a guess, but you need that whole section on weight (for example) to really pinpoint your word (not just synonyms for heavy).

For me as a student, translator, and writer, this thesaurus has become one of my best friends. It is organized in a very creative way, with an index in the back referring to the various sections of the book's body, where terms are grouped by topic. In the index, you look up the word for which you need related words, and then you choose between the many terms under that heading, each with a distinct variation in meaning. You can thereby turn to the section that best relates to the meaning you are looking for.Once you've turned to the section referred to in the index, you not only find an extensive list of synonyms for that term, but you also have, on that same page, words that are related but which fall in different parts of speech. That has been very useful for me. And since the terms are grouped by topic, you can look through neighboring entries and pages of entries, finding all kinds of similar and related words, whereas, in a traditional thesaurus layout, the only thing adjacent to your entry would be those words that start with the same letters.In short, what makes this thesaurus so wonderful is that you have access to an extensive range of word power, since the words referenced in the entry you're interested in are not limited to the space just below the word itself: they are spread throughout the book in logical groups, and the index quickly directs you to the sense of the word that you are interested in.

There are many editions of Roget's Thesaurus, but this is one of the best. The print is large enough to easily read, and in each section there are several alternative words or ideas suggested. For example, if one looks up the idea "event" other closely related ideas are listed, and when one goes to the word section that reflect the idea of event, several alternate idea selections are listed with their corresponding number location (not just the word, but the word idea and its number location). This makes researching the concept much easier.All in all this is the best thesaurus I have seen. Other thesaurus's which are more dictionary-like simply do not have the range of words and concepts that Roget's reflects. Believe me, if I had taken the time to research a few words for this review it would have been a lot better!If you need a thesaurus get a Roget's, and this is one of the best Roget's you can buy. Plus, the price is good.AD2

There are a lot of quaint reference guides out on the market today, but as a professional writer and teacher this is always the thesaurus I reach for. Not only are you provided with nearly half a million synonyms, but Rogets make the definition conise and meaningful.You will find this book an essential part of your reference section be it 2 books or 200 books in volume. It makes little difference if you are writing a term paper or a business letter, you are foolish not to have this vital tool.

Great tool for writing! It works a little different from other thesauruses but it is a very good system that does not only help you with synonyms but also with the correct connotation, so that you write exactly want you want to convey.

This "book" looked sketchy at first: it's not bound, no one else has reviewed it, and it came with a 1-2 day "processing" wait time from the seller.I gambled and bought it anyway I didn't want to pay $160+ and wait 1-2 weeks for processing for the "real book". I got it for OSU's eCampus CS 161 course and I'm happy I did. I much prefer paper books to ebooks, and it was significantly cheaper than buying the actual bound book version. It got to me in WA state 3 days after I ordered it, thanks to Prime shipping.You'll need to stick it in a 3-ring binder. I recommend a 2" binder with straight edge rings.This "book" (stack of papers, really) is printed on both sides and exactly 1.5" thick. It comes pre-punched and the individual pages are printed in color. Not a bad deal.

I thought I'd save some money and buy the Loose Leaf version. To get a 3 ring binder to fit the whole book (2") it cost about another $10. It was big, awkward and heavy. I decided to try 2" rings instead. I'm not sure how this will work, but it does feel a little easier to pick up. (It's still a heavy book - it weighs a little over 4 pounds.) It's cheaper, but the rings a bought from Staples were poor quality. One broke just trying to put it on the book and a couple others kept coming undone. I thought about getting a smaller binder and just taking out the chapter that we are on, but there are often times when you're on chapter 10 and you want to go back and look something up in chapter 2. I decided it would be better to keep the whole book together. It comes with the access codes, but I have not tried to use it yet.

I've used Gaddis' Java and now C++. I love his style of presentation. I'm just learning both languages so I like the consistency of his format, which gives an introduction and then an extended code which focuses on the subject that he introduced. I use the phrase "extended code" because I took a visual basic class using text by a different author. That author would give an introduction and then show the code out of context so it was hard to conceptualize what he was talking about or how to use the code. With Gaddis, the code is in a functioning. He would introduce the subject of the code. Utilize a program that uses the code and then break down the code to highlight the code of topic. His style felt "comprehensive".In addition to Gaddis' personal style of presentation, his text is part of the Pearson Higher Education publications. Pearson is student oriented so there are online tutorials (video notes) which offers a lot of student assistance. I recommend this text and Gaddis to any instructor or student learning programming.

I bought this as eBook version because, let's face it, if you're a commuter student who doesn't want to fight for parking, you don't want to lug this doorstopper around. You can safely assume that programming students have broadband or at least enough internet to be willing to download this book in the first place since it's available for some Kindle apps but not all.I have used Calibre to side-load it on my phone and on Paperwhite so it's not like this is impossible. Just green light it for your other apps so that way I can use XRAY please!Since I put it on my new Paperwhite I have actually begun to enjoy using it, it's great to just search for it. When I'm on a question I can usually just search a phrase form the question and I'll find it earlier in the text. I almost don't even read the book anymore, just look for the reviews and answer all the questions.So just put the caveat "Large File, might take a bit to download" on it and stop with this only available on some Kindle Apps garbage. It clearly works. And I can have all my C++ in pocket-size format which is nice.

Arrived quickly enough. The book was in pretty terrible shape, although I knew this ahead of time, and enjoyed a nice discount. Fortunately the previous owner only made it through the first 50 or so pages, so the highlighting and binding damage was brief.As far as content is concerned, this book provides fantastic examples of well written and documented code. It includes a lot of solutions to common programming problems and essential algorithms, instead of focusing only on c++ syntax, keywords, etc. Also, the programming challenges are fun and thought provoking.

The textbook is organized well and gives good examples of the code and how to use it. It explains the programming language well. I originally bought it for my Kindle so I wouldn't have to carry a large textbook around campus, but I found that referencing it was just difficult in the electronic media compared to a regular textbook. I actually ended up buying the regular textbook as well, and used it at home as a reference and just carried the Kindle to campus. The Kindle version is OK for reading chapters, when you're just reading through. But if you need to search it as a reference, or flip back to review another section, etc., it is very difficult to use. For my next class, I will just get the regular textbook and save the double cost. It would be nice if the electronic copy came with the regular textbook purchase, but I'm not going to pay for both again.

This is my third starting out book. I like all the books in the starting out series so far because the concepts are very well explained so that even a beginner can pick up the book and still understand most concepts. I've used starting out with Java, starting out with c++, and starting out with visual basic 2012, and I like all three books.

This book is one of the worst code teaching books I've ever read. It barely covers the subject matter, it tends to explain code like you already know everything about coding. Super dry with little to no explanations. Both my teachers who used this book often get confused, and have to stop class to help students or figure out what the book was trying to say
