Bad Hair, by James Innes-Smith

From Publishers Weekly

In the grand tradition of The Mullet, Bloomsbury USA's previous foray into the world of unfortunate coiffures, Innes-Smith and Webb celebrate poor hair choices, from shaggy Fab Four 'dos to feathered sides, and from asymmetrical bobs to intricately structured curls and waves. Missing are the comb-overs, the skullets (the bald-on-top, long-in-back look) and the synthetic rugs that also warrant the insult of the book's title, but since the photos are culled from hairdressers' windows, such an absence is understandable: these were styles people felt proud of! The pictures, which were taken over the last 30 years, are unfortunately not dated; still, one might venture to propose that the 70s were particularly unflattering for men, and that the 80s were a rough decade for women. This volume is briefly diverting, and even quite funny, but, as the jacket copy admits, there isn't much to be said about a group of pictures all designed to elicit a single response: "Wow, that's bad hair." Bad Hair...what possessed me to buy this book? What possesses me to do anything I do? Who knows? But I am glad I dropped some coin and took a chance. You know those pictures they have in salons and barbershops that display different hairstyles? Have you ever seen any that looked like they've been up for quite awhile in that the style has gone out of fashion maybe two or three times since it was posted? Well, James Innes-Smith and Henrietta Webb went scavenging in hair chop shops to collect the worst of the worst of these pictures and compiled them here. What was their inspiration? Maybe the same thing that got me to buy the book.Within the pages of this book, you will see some of the most awful hairstyles, mullets, mutton chops, bobs, beehives, sideburns gone wide, more mullets, perms that defy description, and so much more...the horror...the horror....It's a smallish, hardbound book, just a bit larger than a Reader's Digest, and the one thing I noticed right away was there is absolutely no text (I'm quick like that). Just pages and pages of really atrocious hairstyles. Once you start looking through this book, you will understand why there is no text...it's not needed. Each picture speaks volumes. About two thirds of the pictures are black and white, with the other third in color.A fun little book, this would go nicely on your coffee table, if you're weird like me. Also, if you were ever interested in being a member of the Doobie Brothers, at least now you know where to find an appropriate hairstyle. I hope the authors come out with another book entitled Bad Combovers...

What a brilliant idea for a book--a compendium of some of the more horrific hairstyles from the 1960s and 1970s, as taken from hair salon magazines and posters. Though there is practically no text accompanying the photographs, that's OK--this is definitely a case where a picture is worth 1,000 words (or 1,000 startled gasps!).I don't know why, but probably the first 3/4 of the book is men only--but the latter 1/4 of the book makes up for it with some of the weirdest, least flattering women's hairstyles you've ever seen in your life. You have to wonder if these poor women were drunk when they agreed to have these crimes committed on their heads. One of the more, um, interesting styles features a lovely model with gorgeous glossy hair--but the hair has been pulled forward to form a sort of chokehold collar around her neck, complete with Pop Art flower accessory. Then there are the woven helmets of hair--intricate braided and twisted creations that must have taken hours to put together but which are not flattering in the least. This would make a terrific gift for your favorite hairstylist, trendoid niece or nephew, or anyone who enjoys a good snicker. At this price, you can't beat it!

This is a great book. I own a barbershop and have placed it out for my customers. They love it. When you look through the book, it's hard to believe that people paid good money to have some of these haircuts put on their heads.

I was expecting great things from this little book since it was paired with Lileks' Gallery of Regrettable Food. However, the people who put it together forgot one crucial point: it's the commentary that make the Lileks book, and other like it, funny. Just showing pictures of old hairstyles with no copy added isn't very interesting. I can read The Gallery of Regrettable Food over and over and be amused every time. I doubt I'll ever open this one again. I give it three stars for a good try, but I hope next time the author puts forth a little more effort.

This book is one of my faves! The people appear so debonair and what a hoot! From mullets to the lady whose long hair is tied in a bow, there's page after page of ridiculous, BAD hair to laugh at!

Not quite as funny as I thought it'd be.

Book is so cheaply constructed, it looked like a cute idea, but is a tiny book and poorly executed.

Pee-in-your-pants ridiculous.

Prey, by Michael Crichton

Amazon.com Review

In Prey, bestselling author Michael Crichton introduces bad guys that are too small to be seen with the naked eye but no less deadly or intriguing than the runaway dinosaurs that made 1990's Jurassic Park such a blockbuster success. High-tech whistle-blower Jack Forman used to specialize in programming computers to solve problems by mimicking the behavior of efficient wild animals--swarming bees or hunting hyena packs, for example. Now he's unemployed and is finally starting to enjoy his new role as stay-at-home dad. All would be domestic bliss if it were not for Jack's suspicions that his wife, who's been behaving strangely and working long hours at the top-secret research labs of Xymos Technology, is having an affair. When he's called in to help with her hush-hush project, it seems like the perfect opportunity to see what his wife's been doing, but Jack quickly finds there's a lot more going on in the lab than an illicit affair. Within hours of his arrival at the remote testing center, Jack discovers his wife's firm has created self-replicating nanotechnology--a literal swarm of microscopic machines. Originally meant to serve as a military eye in the sky, the swarm has now escaped into the environment and is seemingly intent on killing the scientists trapped in the facility. The reader realizes early, however, that Jack, his wife, and fellow scientists have more to fear from the hidden dangers within the lab than from the predators without. The monsters may be smaller in this book, but Crichton's skill for suspense has grown, making Prey a scary read that's hard to set aside, though not without its minor flaws. The science in this novel requires more explanation than did the cloning of dinosaurs, leading to lengthy and sometimes dry academic lessons. And while the coincidence of Xymos's new technology running on the same program Jack created at his previous job keeps the plot moving, it may be more than some readers can swallow. But, thanks in part to a sobering foreword in which Crichton warns of the real dangers of technology that continues to evolve more quickly than common sense, Prey succeeds in gripping readers with a tense and frightening tale of scientific suspense. --Benjamin Reese

From Publishers Weekly

From the opening pages of Crichton's electrifying new thriller, his first in three years, readers will know they are in the hands of a master storyteller (Timeline, Jurassic Park, etc.). The book begins with a brief intro noting the concerns of Crichton (and others) with the nascent field of nanotechnology, "the quest to build manmade machinery of extremely small size, on the order of... a hundred billionths of a meter"-for this is a cautionary novel, one with a compelling message, as well as a first-rate entertainment.Rare for Crichton, the novel is told in the first person, by Jack Forman, a stay-at-home dad since he was fired from his job as a head programmer for a Silicon Valley firm. In the novel's first third, Crichton, shades of his Disclosure, smartly explores sexual politics as Jack struggles with self-image and his growing suspicion that his dynamic wife, Julia, a v-p for the technology firm Xymos, is having an affair. But here, via several disturbing incidents, such as Jack's infant daughter developing a mysterious and painful rash, Crichton also seeds the intense drama that follows after Julia is hospitalized for an auto accident, and Jack is hired by Xymos to deal with trouble at the company's desert plant. There, he learns that Xymos is manufacturing nanoparticles that, working together via predator/prey software developed by Jack, are intended to serve as a camera for the military. The problem, as Crichton explains in several of the myriad (and not always seamlessly integrated) science lessons that bolster the narrative, is that groups of simple agents acting on simple instructions, without a central control, will evolve unpredictable, complex behaviors (e.g., termites building a termite mound). To meet deadlines imposed by financial pressures, Xymos has taken considerable risks. One swarm of nanoparticles has escaped the lab and is now evolving quickly-adapting to desert conditions, feeding off mammalian flesh (including human), reproducing and learning mimicry-leading to the novel's shocking, downbeat ending.Crichton is at the top of his considerable game here, dealing with a host of important themes (runaway technology, the deleterious influence of money on science) in a novel that's his most gripping since Jurassic Park. In the long run, this new book won't prove as popular as that cultural touchstone (dinos, nanoparticles aren't), but it'll be a smash hit and justifiably so. Film rights sold to 20th Century Fox; simultaneous abridged and unabridged audiotape and CD editions; large-print edition. (One-day laydown Nov. 25)Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

This is by far, my favourite book by the late Michael Crichton. Genius work! Absolutely perfect balance between "edutainment", intrigue, mystery, science, action, and even some humor thrown in. This is astoundingly good!I listen to it again & again, and i very often hear stuff I missed the first time. Nuances related to other things in the book. GENIUS!I'd say my wife & I listen to this two or three times every year, whenever the mood strikes us, and the story never gets old.Good ol' Amazon just gave me a multiple choice survey on this book."Which of these words best describes the mood?" Several options: "Hopeful", "Dark", "Nostalgic", "Light-Hearted", "Suspenseful", and "Thoughtful". While ALL these moods are present at one point or another - I had a tough time choosing between "Dark" and "Suspenseful".Fast steady pace, with believable, very "true-to-life" characters. Just like real life, the characters are organic, slightly flawed; their perspectives are independent though not necessarily "unique". In short - these are very realistic people. For parents of small children - this is a perfect example for the rating of "PG-13". In short - "all things being equal", societal standards, and yadda yadda yadda - 13 years old is a good "cut-off age" (give or take a few years, wherever your kid fits on such a scale). There's "some" violence, and mostly innocuous references to sexuality. Also the narrator George Wilson is perfect! Even modulation, steady, and clear annunciation. Not only is this one of the best "books" but also one of the best audio books too.Definitely get this fantastic story.

The author attempts to convert a very complex area of science as the basis for his novel. In doing so he chooses to over-explain aspects of nanotechnology, biology, and AI theory. Anyone not intensely interested in these areas will put this book down within 50 pages. The predictable "man makes superbug then has to kill it" underlying story, the shadowy corporation that is only mentioned in passing, and the anti-climactic ending, in the end none of these feel like a worthy payoff after the struggle of sticking with the book.

TThis was written over ten years ago but it has the feel of today.A computer programmer is out of work and keeping house while his wife, an up and coming computer specialist, works. When she starts behaving strangely, he suspects she's having an affair. Worse, he fears she's beginning to document things he says and does in preparation for an 'alienation of affection' suit that will take his children away from him during a divorce. Then he's offered a contract job for the company she works for. It seems her company bought his program from the company that fired him. They are experiencing problems with it and want him to fix it.He's afraid he'll be the fall guy -- again -- if the kinks can't be worked out and is hesitant. Then his wife has an accident and things go screwy. It seems the only way he can find out what's going on is to take the contract work. From then on, it's a nail biter.I'm not a scientific person, so I don't know about the IT part of this. But it kept me hooked till the last page.Good read!

The story is great, and overall the narrator does a good job, with one exception.**SEMI SPOILER**Does Ricky really need to sound like Hermey, the dentist in Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer? Having that weirdly-juvenile nasal voice assault my ears seriously detracted from the tension in the story. I'd read the book years ago, and recently sprung for Whispersync. I don't completely regret my Audible purchase, but this is one recording I doubt I'll listen to again.

As I expected this novel was fantastic. Also as expected from this author it is a warning. A warning of what could happen if this technology is not carefully monitored by a committee with no financial or academic interest in the outcome. Nanotechnology can bring many benefits both in medicine and invention, but it has a dark side. Michael Crichton has given us a fictional example of one way unmonitored research could result in horrors that would wreak devastation upon humanity. If you like speculative fiction that it based upon scientific possibilities, you will love this book.

This book delivered. The author has a way of making you understand the technical side of science otherwise I couldn't have been able to read this book. With that said the storyline was fantastic and well written . I gave this book the rating I did because it was hard to put down and I finished it in 2 days.

Full disclosure: I've always been a Crichton fan. For those familiar with his work, "Prey" is yet another hit. For others, Dr. Crichton's works - including this one - have a unique style, combining a thrilling, but entirely believable story line, rational scientific explanations for what goes on in the story, and a warning. You won't regret picking this book up, but you may have trouble putting it down.

This is an excellent narrative, compelling to read. It includes a thorough character study of each of the pilots and others involved in competing for the Ortieg prize. Their later lives and careers are also noted. Many individuals important to the story are not generally known today. All had an influence on the rapid development of the aviation industry. The text is superbly researched, including a chronology and extensive list of original sources.

What an extremely readable historical novel!....Mr. Jackson's detailed account of one of the most important sagas in aviation history is a delight! a must read for anyone who is remotely interested in aviation history....The story brings out numerous behind-the -scenes anecdotes which were previously unknown or forgotten.......

Excellant background story of all the attempts to cross the Atlantic that spring in 1927. Could have used a few more pictures of the aircraft that are written about but are forgotten today.

The world was mesmerized when Charles Lindbergh made his successful nonstop solo flight from New York to Paris in 1927. Suddenly, the unthinkable became not only thinkable, but doable. No less captivating and praiseworthy, however, were the exploits - mostly unsuccessful and in some cases tragic - of other aviators, including female aviators, who also tried to conquer the Atlantic Ocean. Lindbergh's triumph overshadowed these other risk-takers and groundbreakers. And for even the most avid aviation aficionados, there is a tendency to overlook them.Fortunately, Joe Jackson in Atlantic Fever: Lindbergh, His Competitors and the Race to Cross the Atlantic has brought them back to life in exquisite and fascinating detail. Rene Fonck, Richard Byrd, Clarence Chamberlin, Floyd Bennett, Bert Acosta, Francesco de Pinedo, Charles Nungesser, Ruth Elder, and a host of others including Lindbergh...they're all here. The reader is put squarely in the middle of all the action surrounding their flights, along with their historical and chronological contexts. For example, we learn about Italy's fascist dictator Benito Mussolini through the successes of de Pinedo. We're given insight into President Calvin Coolidge through his recognition - or lack of - of the members of Charles Levine's "Columbia" flight team. And did Byrd really reach the North Pole in 1926?In addition, the genius of aircraft designers Igor Sikorsky, Anthony Fokker, and Giuseppe Bellanca is highlighted. A bonus is the explanation in layman's terms of such aeronautical phenomena like "ground effect".Jackson finishes off Atlantic Fever - a book filled primarily with drama, rancor, and disappointment - on a comical and somewhat uplifting note. In 1938 in a plane that was barely flyable, Douglas "Wrong Way" Corrigan took off in a fog from New York, thinking he was heading west to Los Angeles. Twenty-six hours later, he landed in Dublin, Ireland. Oh well, oftentimes it's not only perseverance, preparation, and ability that make history and result in progress, but a bit of good fortune as well. After reading this fine, fast-paced historical work, you might find yourself asking, "Charles who?"

After hearing about "Atlantic Fever" during an author interview on NPR, I decided to buy it on Kindle. If anything, Joe Johnson was far better in print than in an interview. He analyzed the competition to be the first to fly from New York to Paris to win the Orteig Prize in the 1920s and the people involved--the aviators, the promoters, the engine manufacturers, and the airframe manufacturers. What we have taken for granted since May 30, 1939 (when Pan Am started regularly-scheduled trans-Atlantic flights) was a new field in the 1920s, when primitive aircraft, weather conditions, pilot fatigue, and navigation techniques were the major obstacles to long-distance flight.I'd recommend this book to all audiences who can read it, from junior high school on up. Well-written history can become habit-forming!

This was a historic block of time brought to life quite nicely. The in-fighting, jealousies and the thin, fine line that divides heroism from sheer stupidity were well illustrated, along with the politics of the time. Much of what I read I never knew, and that in itself, made the book worthwhile.

Well written account of the times and people involved in early flying across the Atlantic. Many interesting side episodes are included

excellent bood, great insights that I never knew

Erin:☆This Review Contains Spoilers☆This book satisfied me while I was reading it. Somewhat bittersweetly, as I finished it, I found my craving for new content increased. Seth has lost his memory and Ronodin has convinced him that they're brothers? That's certainly one way to have Seth's shadow charmer abilites improve. Brandon Mull has proven that even a spinoff series can have as many plot twists as the OG. One thing that disappointed me (but not enough that I care THAT much) is that there wasn't more Eve. I love my spunky little girl. And I need. More. Seveth. But there's so many things I enjoyed, so I might as well compile a list:• Ronodin is a good character. He's so different from his cousin, Bracken. It kind of reminds me of the Seth-Kendra dynamic.• Lomo? Yes please.• A non-unicorn fairy queen? Makes a LOT more sense. And at least I know why there was a flying rabbit on the cover. Honestly.• Knox and Tess?? And Tess can see the stuff without milk?????? I neED EXPLANATIONS????While there's much more I could share, the bottom line is this:I loved this, but I need the next one. I wish it was sooner than it probably will be. I'll just have to hope for the best.

This is the first time I bought any of the Fablehaven/Dragonwatch books as I had a friend who had them on the shelf and let me borrow them. I thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the series so when this one came out I did not want to wait. The only bad thing I could say against the CD's are that they do not have the chapter titles printed anywhere either on the cd's or a paper inside them. I am not one for giving away any spoilers, so I will simply say the story was engaging, and left me wishing the next book was already written.

Celebrant, King of the Dragons, is irate after Kendra and Seth beat him in the previous book. Now, he wants revenge. He plans to take over Wyrmroost by displacing the keepers. How? By finding the mysterious dominion stone.Kendra and Seth rush to a cursed castle to find the hidden stone, only to be pulled into a centuries old game that has the castle's residents turning into Gold or Silver. Celebrant is there too, but in a human avatar and unable to use his dragon powers. It is a rush to the finish. Whomever finds the stone will be the victor. My Thoughts-The Fablehaven books are always entertaining, and this one keeps up the pattern. In the previous book, Kendra and Seth were able to stop Celebrant from taking over the keeper's head quarters, but now the evil dragon has new plans, and they involve the deaths of both Kendra and Seth. His first try includes having Kendra abandoned on the road with no way to return to sanctuary. This is the first adventure of the book. Then, he plans to capture the dominion stone. Once all the characters get to the cursed castle things really heat up and Kendra and Seth are pulled into a game set up by a mischievous dwarf. The game has held the residents captive for over a thousand years. Along for the ride also come Kendra and Seth's younger cousins, Knox and Tess, who seem to have some secret powers of their own. New characters and new powers! Oh boy! The author's imagination runs as wild as in previous books and I was amazed at the new situations he developed.I enjoyed the mysteries, suspense and tension of the entire book and can't wait until the next book in the series comes out! I'm giving this 4 stars!

Brandon Mull never disappoints! This book was as fun and exciting as I expected. Clean and yet original and fascinating! I get so tired of gender issues, suggestive scenes, and crude language that everyone else is using now. Brandon Mull has not lowered his standards, just makes his characters awesome and memorable, and his plots are unexpected which is very refreshing for me. He also comes up with new and creative places and situations. Fascinating!!

I'm an avid reader of many genre. But Fablehaven is my favorite series of all time, because it's perfectly written and so much fun! I've read the entire series through at least five times :) The Wrath of the Dragon King (Dragonwatch #2) continues the thrilling adventures of Kendra, Seth, their family and friends. If you love the world of mystical creatures and magical realms you will definitely enjoy this series! Lots of surprises in this book (as well as a very concerning cliffhanger). I always have a hard time pacing my reading of Fablehaven books, and unfortunately finished the book in a few days... Can't wait for the next book!!!

We started with fabelhaven book #1 this summer as our family read aloud, and my kids fell head over heels obsessed with this series. As we ended with book 5, my oldest stumbled acrossed “Dragonwatch” (since she is dragon obsessed) and squealed when she read the first line of the book realizing it had more of Kendra & Seth’s adventures. We blew through both dragonwatch books as my children devoured every word. It was even a hot topic during dinner to talk about “What if this happens” or “Where is Warren?”. They have even taken up playing Yahtzee... to say they are chomping at the bite for Dragonwatch #3 would be an understatement.Well written, fun, adventures, the entire family enjoys this series.

As an amateur writer, I always marvel at the style and prose of Brandon. To be as good of a writer as him is my goal! This book, and most importantly the series, is something that you should absolutely NOT PASS BY! I love the apparent character development from when Kendra and Seth first stepped into this whole new world, and the description is absolutely marvelous! 10/10 would recommend for both adults and children alike!

I love the Fablehaven books sans was so happy to see the story picked up again and the characters evolve! I can’t wait to see what happens next!!

I didn't know what to expect when I started this book. I love mystery storylines, they always move fast and you have a little blood. This is definitely Opposite of that. It remind me of the old PI tv shows. The storyline moved along slow...which made it hard for you not to miss anything. The characters were great. Jane was so laid back I thought oh she going to get whacked. Cordelia kept cracking me up she is great friend. The others characters fit right into the storyline just perfect. I would definitely recommend this book.

I am enjoying this book more the second time around. Great characters, great story, great read. Finding a dead body can be traumatizing to most people, but not our heroine 'Jane Lawless'. Jane is living in the 1980's, a time when homophobia and misogyny were part of your normal everyday life. Her ability to navigate the system and use it to solve crime keeps you coming back for more!

Humorous, Cordelia may be on of the drollest characters in modern mysterydom. She acts as Dr Watson to Jane's Sherlock.Good mystery with a plausible ending.More importantly, it treats homosexuality as an acceptable way of life. I will definitely read more of these.

Ellen Hart is an excellent author. This book with Jane as the main character, has her research why someone passed from what appears not to be murder. Play along as likely you will not figure the answer. I did not.

This was a fun read between heaveier duty books. I appreciated the characters, but in the end it all boiled down to one piece of paper. So it was somewhat predictable, but I would read more in this series, just for fun.

This is my first Ellen Hart. I plan to read another. The plot was a bit contrived but Jane and her sidekick are interesing enough to cover that weakness. I look forward to a later story.

Great book!

Nice reading something set at the U of M and Minneapolis. The story is ok. The writing is pretty good.

#185,107 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Where else are you going to go for information on Hungarian Hi-Powers?I liked this enough that I bought the paperback for the office shelves after reading the Kindle version. I'm a professional in the field. It is a very slim book and, as a critical review notes, based on a limited number of samples. But it's also based on Jerry Paregien's and Gary Frazier's (Jerry's all-but-co-author's) first-hand observations. This book avoids the "telephone" trap of repeating Internet conventional wisdom of uncertain provenance. The author is very active on a forum related to the BHP, and his invariably helpful posts there lay the groundwork for this short but focused work. There is room for a larger 2nd edition with some more content, for example, more detail on exports to third countries (neither Hungary nor the USA), and more detail on the Mauser SA80 and DA90 and the version sold in South Africa as the Luger SA80, and a serial number list however incomplete. (From even a small number serials it's possible to make production estimates; google the "Tiger tank problem" as taught in B-schools).

Unfortunately, there just isn't a lot known about these Browning Hi-Power clones, but after having 2 of them, they're every bit as good as the Brownings that they're modeled after, except...there are a myriad of model numbers, importers, and even different operating systems. If you're wondering if your FEG is a BHP-compatible clone, this is THE source for information because some are 100% compatible with 100% Browning internal operating system, some are partial compatible with an internal operating system like a S&W 39xx/59xx series, and some have a Browning internal operating system but are only 85-90% compatible.Mr. Paragien has provided a GREAT resource for those wanting information on these inexpensive (definitely not cheap) pistols!

Sad that FEG is no longer in business and parts for these are drying up, but this is a useful work on how to identify your pistol and help with finding parts that will fit & keep it running. Is it exciting? Not in the least. Is it interesting? Only to someone who has one of the FEG-manufactured pistols sold under various distributors here in the USA. This book enables you to tell them apart, since even the same distributor often utilized the same nomenclature for wildly differing pistols over a decade's span [or more] of importation...

I bought this for Kindle when I started looking for Browning High Powers. Every where I was looking this book was either quoted or referenced. I purchased it and everyone was right. It was a well referenced primer on the FEG series of pistols complete with photos and descriptions. I now know the differences and similarities between these two fine pistols. Great material!

I was considerably underwhelmed by it. Not really a treatise on the FEG; rather his personal experiences with a very limited number of samples. no significant information as to s/n ranges, dates of manufacture by model, or overall quantities. A halfhearted attempt to contact former KBI importer Kassnar was referenced and written off as "the Daly website had gone down"--yet, informed internet search has much information directly available online from the Kassnar family representative. Similarly, no information was presented relative to KBI use of FEG frames and FN slides, but thousands of these guns were imported into the US, either directly or as used police guns (primarily from Israel). I shoulda just saved my %5.99 and stuck w/ the internet...

Awesome..... gave me all the confidence i needed not only to decided which one i wanted but to educate the store owner as to what he had and why i would only give him a certain price and why i did not want the ones he was willing to negotiate on.... 10x what i needed and for 99 cents

The FEG variants of the Hi-Power can be very confusing, and the author goes a great job of clearing up as much of the confusion as possible. Very helpful if you are thinking g if buying one. I only wish there was a little more info regarding the Hi-Power pistols FEG produced under the Mauser SA80 name.

The most information I have ever seen in one place. Have read a lot of stuff on the internet some good some not so good. Having sifted through a lot of bad information. Have checked out what is in this book, have not found one error yet. When the author does not know He tells you I don't know. He does not assume that's the way it is. He finds the facts. Any one with weapons of this type, or an interest in them. Should give this book a read. Get a copy and keep it for reference. I have a FEG P9RK which is a short version of the P9. Mine has the Smith&Wesson double action system rather than the browning single action. Which means it's not a Hi-power clone. I don't know if you could say it's a look alike. More like a Hi-power type of firearm. This book was still of great help to me. It may even make you a better shot with your FEG pistol.

The author (John Lennox) did such a good job presenting multiple ideas and theories for various interpretations of Genesis. This book does not argue reasons for or against believing in evolution, but more talks about what the bible tells us and combines it with that we now know from science. He gently starts the book out reminding readers of a time when Christians were determined to prove that the sun moved around a fixed earth because of references in the bible that seemed to suggest that. He believes the bible is the infallible word of God, but that our interpretations of it don't hold that same weight. He encourages readers in what my favorite Christian preacher Alistar Begg says that "The main things are the Plain things, and the Plain things are the main things" I am humbled and feel my mind has opened a bit to the warning not to take popular opinion, or tradition as excuses for not trying to interpret the truth. There are some things the Bible is pretty obvious and clear on. "In the Beginning GOD"... did it. He's the Creator and He did it in a phased approach. How long those phases were, be it 24 literal hours, 24 hours with long breaks in between acts of new levels of creation complexity, or long ages of creation between each Genesis tier, is highly debatable. The author provides reasons for thinking each of these and does so fairly and humbly. The other area Lennox draws a line on is that humans are made in the image of God. That we are special and unique. He goes on to discuss why this makes sense even if you believe in an old earth with evolutionary periods mixed with super natural events. There are things in here and parts of his theology I'm not sure I agree with (Satan corrupting the earth before Human's sinned), but then, they aren't the main things and certainly not worth missing out on the main message and subject of this book and I don't claim to have studied enough to earn an opinion. Lennox continually points readers back to what Genesis says about who God is and why we are here, and removes the barrier of choosing between atheism evolution or young-earth creationist as the debate has recently been reduced to. There is some rational, scientifically savvy middle ground. All this to say, I only made it to (not through) 300-level college sciences. I got as high in math as I could until it started going all abstract art-language on me. I'm not a genius and I don't consider myself scientifically well-read. I enjoyed reading a brilliant Christian mathematician argue that reason, science and God can share the same space and not deteriorate the authority of scripture. I've long been doubtful of a literal 24 hour interpretation of Genesis as I wonder when the angel rebellion happened? They are creatures/created... when were they cast out? I also even more simply wonder how Adam could name all the animals and get lonely in a single day. My personal feelings on it all is that I am comfortable not knowing how God pulled it off. I believe he made it all, and he did it on purpose, and that each person bears elements of God's image. This book reminded me of two things. First, to be humble and know what I don't know, and secondly, try to be open-minded in my interpretation of scripture and not draw false lines in the sand... Like the earth is fixed, or it has to be young.Ultimately I've walked away with the thought that Natural Science can help interpret the Bible, when you believe God to be the author of both.

This is not an exhaustive look at Genesis, science, or Christianity by any means. However, it is a great starting place for anyone who wants to learn more about the different views regarding the “seven days of creation.”The author starts off with an overview of the “fixed earth” controversy from the time of Galileo. He points out that the church and science seemed to be at odds with each other on a very important point, but now the church acknowledges the “moving earth” facts (the sun is fixed in space and the earth orbits around it). He uses this to show that it is not impossible for science and Christianity to see eye to eye.The author steers clear of anything “too scientific” (at least in language) for the layman to understand, but he still hits on a lot of points that you could follow up on and gives reference to other works that do go in depth. He also doesn’t preach, but does clearly state that he is a Christian (and a scientist) and thus gives the Gospel message full weight in his discussion. He connects Genesis with the rest of the Bible in a very clear and theologically correct way.Overall, it’s a good read that I recommend to any Christian (or non-Christian) who wants to learn more about how the Bible and science interact with each other.

I read this book as part of my research for the "One Verse Podcast."It's hard to disagree with a man who has 3 Doctorates. And I don't disagree ... not exactly. This book is full of great insights into how to understand Genesis 1 from a scientific perspective. It is just that this book is little more than a basic introduction to some of the issues and themes surrounding Genesis 1, and even then, some of the points made the book seem to be poorly researched and explained. For example, on page 125, he quoted K. A. Kitchen as saying that while there are numerous analogies between Genesis 1-2 and the Babylonian Enuma Elish, there is not direct relationship between the two, and so we must abandon any attempt to see any connection or correlation. In my own research, I have found exactly the opposite, and a large number of contemporary Bible scholars are seeing more and more correlation and connection between Genesis 1-2 and the Enuma Elish, and not only that, but also with the Egyptian and Canaanite creation stories as well.I do think, however, that his explanation of the word "yom" (day) is spot on (pp. 49-52), as well as his explanation of the so-called "creation" of the sun, moon, and stars on the fourth day (pp. 58-60). His explanations are short, but accurate.Ultimately, this book, while good, is little more than an introduction to some of the key themes and issues surrounding the interpretation and understanding of Genesis 1 in light of modern science.
