This is an insightful book especially if you are a bit new to marketing. While building a story brand is nothing new, Miller does a more than adequate job setting up its importance in marketing and then fleshing out the details in section two. After a good discussion of the StoryBrand Brand Script (SB7), in section three he discusses how to implement this to build a better website - still spot on material. He then discusses how this can apply to a large organization, then wraps up the book by giving a so-called StoryBrand marketing Road Map.However, this is where the book and his obvious marketing ploy at the often hapless reader falls apart. At the most crucial stage of the book he skimps on each of the five elements of the Road Map, all the time mentioning that there is more to be learned at his live conferences held periodically and also online. While it's OK to mention this option, it is over-bearing. Not only does it become over-bearing, but the last part of the book is intentionally short of implementation details as a way to draw the reader into wanting, or "needing" more to implement the book's overall strategy. It's clever. I just received notice that my 48 hour window of opportunity is closing - no thanks Mr. Miller.Below is the email blast just received."This private invitation is only good for another 24 hours. If you're tired of wasting money on websites that don't work... If nothing is happening when you send your email campaigns...If your elevator pitches fall flat...The pain stops here.If you haven't clarified your message, your current marketing is costing you money. You're pouring water in a leaky bucket.There's a better way to talk about your products and services -- in a way that compels people listen and respond. StoryBrand helps you uncover it."But what a minute, let's go back full circle, aren't these the reasons I bought the book in the first place? Do I really have to spend $1500 or more to learn about this since it’s supposed to be fully covered in the book? I’ve used the hero’s journey model for more than two decades. He sure was right this time.Lots of people have written about how to use the hero’s journey in both storytelling and in marketing copy. This book is about writing marketing copy, especially web copy. Donald Miller does four important things that make this book unique and helpful.He points out that you shouldn’t be the hero of the story. Many writers do that, but the customer should be the hero. OK, then, what about the company or the brand? That should be the guide. Think Obi-Wan Kenobi from Star Wars or Haymitch from Hunger Games.Miller also notes that if there’s no danger, there’s no story that matters. Most other writers don’t mention the danger or underplay it. But the reason we call it the” hero’s journey” is that the hero makes it through the forest when lots of other people don’t. One of my childrens' favorite stories! It has inspired many hours of "playing Roxaboxen!"The children in this story find endless imaginative uses for what most people would call trash - and the story is told in such a way as to excite children to use their imaginations with the things they find lying around. I am a fan of unhindered, outdoor imaginative playing, and this book has certainly inspired that in my children.

As a mama of 4 kiddos who loves creative play and reading more than electronics, this book is probably on my top 5 list. Children as young as 3 love this book. It's a wonderful world of creative play and is inspired my children to go and do the same. They love this book as much as I do!

This is one of the finest children's books I've ever read. It brought tears to my eyes when I read it years ago -- and I had to buy another copy now to read to the next generation. It brings back so many memories of my own childhood, from an era long ago. Yet, children today can still appreciate it. It's beautiful.

"I love it!" "It's really clever!" "It makes you want to go outside and put things together!" These are direct quotes from my 9 and 7 year old children :) I came across this book last year and checked it out from the library. Then I purchased it for our personal collection. Needless to say, our 3 children (an we parents) LOVE the book. Bonus, it's based on a TRUE story! I'd give it 10 stars if possible--it reflects the imagination and joy of childhood that all readers will relate to!

This book was a childhood favorite of mine. I bought it again because the local elementary school was having a family reading night and I thought the kids might like it. Boy was I right! Of the books they had to choose from each group chose this one and I wound up reading it 5 or 6 times in a row.One of the things I love about this book is that it encourages imagination. With very little these kids create a whole world. I hope that at least one kid I read to that night went outside the next day and picked up a black pebble or rode a horse made from a stick and brindle.

This book took a long time to arrive, but so glad it made it here! What an absolutely delightful read. I enjoyed the imaginations of the children coming to life and their "town." It brought back many similar memories of my sisters and me playing outside.

Classic story about the magic of childhood and the hours spent playing. It captures how ordinary things shape your life and become beautiful memories.

I grew up with this book, and I was extremely excited to have found it online and at an affordable price for my daughter. My younger brother, sister, and I were always into building forts, so it was interesting to us. Regardless of the small amount of actual content in this book, a few of the characters were developed well enough that we each could relate to one of them, which endeared it to us even more. A great book for small children.

I pre-ordered this book hoping it was neither a deep dive that heads down every conceivable rabbit trail, nor a cursory gloss over of this giant of a Texan. Author Brian Cervantez nailed it and strikes the perfect balance. What I didn't know when I ordered the book is how fluid and pleasing Professor Cervantez's writing style would be. Simply put, this book is as readable as it is informative. I highly recommend it for anyone who has in interest in the history of Texas and Fort Worth, as well as the business giants of Carter's era who left their mark on the State and Nation, an impact that is still felt today. Kudos to Professor Cervantez on a great read. I thank him for his work on the project.

During the 1930s and 1940s a small group of intellectuals at Oxford University held twice weekly gatherings to unwind, chat, discuss the news of the day, and most importantly to hear, read, and criticize each other's writings. Never formally organized, without bylaws and officers, the men (no women were allowed to attend) sparked debate and discussions among themselves that were to have long lasting and ongoing consequences for our world and culture. They were the Inklings, and their stories have often been told separately or in some combinations. The Fellowship is a lengthy, copiously referenced, and enjoyable group biography of four of the most important Inklings: J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Owen Barfield, and Charles Williams. Other Inklings like Major Warner Lewis, Hugo Dyson, Nevil Coghill, Lord David Cecil, and others are covered as well.The Zaleskis emphasize that most of the Inklings were of an age to have been directly affected by World War I, and that much of what was to come from them was influenced by that conflict. Another major influence was Christianity. The four Inklings most thoroughly covered here were deeply religious men: Tolkien the Roman Catholic, Williams the Anglican mystic, Barfield the Anthroposophist, and Lewis, who went from early belief to atheism and then returned to Christian faith. In large part that desire has been successful, though the Zaleskis admit at the end that the Inklings' "permanent place in Christian renewal and, more broadly, in intellectual and artistic history, is for the future to decide."I enjoyed The Fellowship. Having been a fervent reader of J.R.R. Tolkien for over forty years I was already familiar with his biography, though I found much here that was new to me. I have also enjoyed C.S. Lewis' works, and I appreciated reading the Zaleskis' sometimes critical analyses of his thinking. I am less familiar with Charles Williams and Owen Barfield's writings, but the Zaleskis have inspired me to seek out more about them. Perhaps the most important result of the Zaleskis' work is a fresh appreciation for those Inklings meetings that helped give us so much that is beautiful.

I am not a scholar and thus am not qualified to write a detailed, referenced and coherent review of this work. So here are some notes from the viewpoint of the completely hobbit obsessed fantasy fan.First off, though the book is quite extensive, fully sourced and covers a lot of ground in more or less chronological order, it is also quite readable for someone that has not spent their whole life in the ivory towers of academe. The authors spend the time to explain influences, to review other authors and works that are related to the main works of the Inklings. Reviews and contemporary reactions to the major works are discussed, both good and bad. So though the material is fairly high level criticism, it is accessible to the layman. There were no sections that were a chore to wade through, the whole work kept me engaged.A minor warning though, synopses are made of all the major works of each author. If you have not yet read all the works of all the major members of the Fellowship, it would be best to read them before diving into this one. There are some pretty major spoilers.I've read several other biographies and histories of the Inklings and Tolkien, this is by far the most detailed one. I discovered and rediscovered many facets of the story of these great authors, and many puzzling pieces now fit together. I think I'll read the trilogy again, I always cry at the last scene. How wonderful to know that the author was also in tears as he wrote about the ship setting sail on that last journey.

This book can't decide if it is written for lay people or academics. Some sections are a real slog (summaries of the writings of Charles' Williams are gibberish), but if you are a fan of Tolkien & Lewis, it is worth reading the parts of the book that discuss them. It seems odd that the authors felt a need to give complete summaries of books like the Narnian Chronicles. I did finish it - even looked through the end notes - but wish it had been something it was not. I'll keep looking.

This is a lovely book that so well captures the charm and intelligence of these four men, the Inklings, thinking and philosophizing while at Oxford in the 1930s and 40s. Bookended by two horrible wars, the story of how they came to create worlds of fantasy and thought with a religious context is absorbing. It certainly makes you want to have been a fly on the wall at the Eagle and Child pub where they held so many discussions. I visited this pub two years ago and was shown the corner table where they often met, and it was like visiting holy ground.

I've tried to finish this book three times, and keep giving up.I started reading Kellerman's books back in the late Eighties or early Nineties, when I was just a wee lass starting college. I was enthralled by Alex's psychological insight and Milo's empathy, contrasted against the noir and gritty realism. I am and have always been a character-oriented reader, but was impressed by his careful-if-sometimes-too-coincidental plotting. I stuck with Alex through his relationship difficulties with Robin, his morphing from clinician to forensic specialist, and the very gradual shifts away from the relationship-oriented writing that resonated even in the most outlandish scenarios.So this book may be the end of my tagging along with the guys. I don't get any sense that Alex is interested any longer in the human side of the victim or potential suspects. There's just a pervasive, overwhelming feeling of apathy, contempt, fatigue, and resentment from Alex and Milo. I get enough of that from real life and reading the NYT and WaPo. I don't need it in my fiction-life as well.And finally--this is a long-standing pet peeve--I have to say that Robin's eagerness to just drop her panties at a second's notice for this guy, book after book, is not realistic and frankly a little annoying. No one is that hot. She has become the epitome of a one-dimensional character., and he could have done so much more to develop her.

OK, so I've read every Delaware book thus far and I've been reading this one for awhile. It is mildly entertaining but becoming very repetitive and predictable. I think this series has pretty much jumped the shark at this point. Also, very irritating is the stilted dialogue in this book. It is almost unbearable to read most questions posed by characters ending with ",no?" As in, "that's what people do, no?" It is okay when used sparingly but the author has almost everyone using this sentence structure. in my experience, people just don't talk like that and it makes the book a little painful to read. I know, I am being picky, but when paying a lot for a book from a well known author, I expect a little more creativity. Instead, it seems, he has all the characters speak as he likely does. I can't think of any other reason for this. Otherwise, an OK book, but I am going to step off the Delaware bandwagon. Just my opinion, I could be wrong :)

i’ve been waiting with baited breath for this book to come out as i am a huge fan of milo & alex. this book was a supreme let down. it is soooooo boring!!!! sooo boring, so technical and what’s with the body shapers?! really? thumbs down. i was super excited when i saw this book had been delivered & tore the packaging open when it arrived as i rode the elevator to my apartment. i usually finish his books in one sitting. i’ve fallen asleep twice while trying to finish. i’m going out to get a pizza, then i’m gunna come back and attempt finish it. then, wait another year and hopefully the next one he writes is better.

Agatha Christie wrote 33 novels featuring Hercule Poirot; Rex Stout wrote an equal number featuring Nero Wolfe and Conan Doyle wrote a mere FOUR about Sherlock Holmes. And while they also wrote numerous short pieces about their characters, I think it's fair to note that the novel is the in-depth way of understanding a characterAll of which is to lead into the fact that this is the 34TH Alex Delaware; which, in turn, is to lead into the fact that, with ANY of the above in their heyday, you don't REVIEW the latest work, you, simply, announce it.Of COURSE some of the Delaware's are better than others; Of COURSE they don't have the kind of freshness of discovery, today they had when he, Kellerman, and even you and I, were younger. But... IT DOESN'T MATTER! It's the new Alex Delaware and you will read it because, if for no other reason (and there are many) you've read all the others!Oh, and by the way, isn't it about time we started calling them Alex Delaware/Milo Sturgis novels?

If you like the rapport between the two then you won't be disappointed. If you are like me and not from LA and enjoy the tour of the city Alex generally takes you on, then again you won't be disappointed. These are the things I have come to appreciate in this series. And no Alex Delaware novel would be complete without a shot across the bow at people who substitute verbiage for intelligent thought. There's a very good example of that in here, and I don't even know how Jonathan managed to create it all.Robin's role is minimal, which for me is good news. Others may enjoy her character.This may be a spoiler:I thought the mystery was pretty good. As the book progressed it looked more and more like it was going to be some complex or convoluted scheme to cover up one thing or another, but in the end, it was actually quite simple. Sort of a reverse of how a lot of mysteries often go.

While I still enjoy Kellerman's characters and their relationships to each other, I found this book disappointing. There was a lack of consistency in the details, and some logic and timeline problems that were off-putting. And why do we have to get a list of every street they drive to get somewhere? Who cares? I've read most of the Delaware series up till now, but this may have been my last one.

Alex and Milo are getting old. This is not up to the usual standard of writing set by Jonathan kellerman and, if Alex continues to work, hope he gets his mojo back.erman

I’m struggling to get through this book just because it’s a Jonathan Kellerman. Purportedly anyway. I have a strong feeling that Jonathan is letting Jesse Kellerman write under his name. The last two books are nothing like the Jonathan Kellerman I have always eagerly anticipated. Sadly I won’t be finishing the book nor purchasing anymore in the future. I would like my money back.
